ANNAPOLIS VALLEY

Annapolis Valley Crime Stoppers continues to be an active group. We have had a busy year spreading the word about our organization and joining in many parades. In a time of "everyone is too busy" we feel we are working hard and are well received by local communities when we represent Crime Stoppers. This year we have spent a great deal of time and effort reporting on human trafficking and hope that people understand that yes that does happen in Nova Scotia. Our jail and uniforms have been a great success wherever we go. Unfortunately a long time active member, Joan Watkins, has had to retire from our group. She is a Bev Smith talented and much appreciated member. CPO Rodena Renaud, our Bridgetown detachment representative, has moved to a new position in the city and started her Board Chair, Annapolis Valley new job as Domestic Violence Co-ordinator . She will be missed by all. We have been fortunate to have two new members join our group recently. I would like to thank all who participate in our group at any level, without our volunteers we would never be able to help keep our communities safe.

ANTIGONISH

Since our last AGM we have been busy with various projects. We finished the year with an entry in the Christmas parade. The last of January we had our fundraiser for the year which was a hockey game with the local high school team and the RCMP. It was well attended and a lot of fun and profitable for us. In May, we attended Mayfest at St. FX with a table set up displaying our banner and gave out a lot of our promotional material. We helped Crime Prevention with the Bike Rodeo and did several Road Checks with the RCMP where we gave out more of our literature. Our PSAS are being aired over the local radio station, thanks to Gerard MacNeil Ken Farrell the station manager. We will be having an appreciation luncheon later this month for our board members thanking them for their support. I must also Board Chair, Antigonish mention our community Policing Officer Morgan MacPherson and S/Sgt Holly Glassford for their support. We will likely be ending the year with an entry in the Christmas Parade. We are thinking again of another hockey game fundraiser for next year. I would like to thank our board members for their support over the past year and look forward to another successful year.

COLCHESTER AND AREA

Whether directly or indirectly crime is a factor which impacts our daily lives, since it's launch in Nova Scotia 30 years ago Crime Stoppers has helped solve serious crimes such as; murder, fraud, assault, robberies, drug related offences and more. Through our partnerships with Municipal and Federal agencies, Crime Stoppers plays an important role in keeping our communities safe. The Colchester Board of Crime Stoppers is a very active and diverse board. Currently we have fifteen (15) active volunteers from various social and cultural backgrounds and ranging in age from 19 to 85 years old. It is this diversity in our Amanda Morrisey board which makes us have a true representation of the population we serve. Board Chair, Colchester This past year we have partaken in dozens of community events such as, sponsoring a Bearcats hockey game, various parades, school events, check stops with police and community displays at various events. In the coming year we will look for ways to expand our reach within the community. I would like to thank our community partners; the RCMP, the Truro Police and Fire Department, local newspapers, Our Municipality and the Town of Truro, businesses and the general public who support the Crime Stoppers Program. And to our dedicated volunteers for your service to the Crime Stoppers program, your efforts help make Colchester a safer place to live, work, do business, go to school, use the roadways and raise a family. Thank You!

CUMBERLAND

The Cumberland Board holds regular meetings with an average attendance of 6 members. These meetings are held at the RCMP detachment in Oxford on the last Tuesday of the month. Our newest fundraiser is a draw on $100 worth of Lottery tickets. Our annual spring BBQ continues to be a big hit among the members. Also, in May, the board participated in Police Week held at the Amherst Mall. A booth was operated to distribute promotional materials and sell tickets for our fundraiser. The Town of Oxford continues to display the Tips line number in their monthly newsletter. A letter was drafted which will be used to Alfred King look for donations from local businesses. In an attempt to sponsor another shredding event in the coming year, we have had some success in securing a few Board Chair, Cumberland pledges. Once we have sufficient pledges to cover the initial cost of the truck and driver, we will set a date to operate this fraud awareness activity. The board wishes to thank all those individuals and businesses for their support over the past year.

EAST HANTS

East Hants Crime Stoppers was founded in 1988. The idea of Crime Stoppers in our area was first mentioned at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, whereby the first Chairperson, Paul Mombourquette, asked for volunteers to begin the group. The concept was favourably received and about 18 people formed the East Hants District. In 1992, Constable Gary Hicks of the Enfield RCMP approached us with the idea of combining all our local Crime Prevention groups under a Community Policing umbrella called Tri County Crime Prevention, which has since been changed to East Hants Crime Prevention. This has been in effect since then and is Chris Wilbur very successful. Board Chair, East Hants At the present time, East Hants Crime Stoppers consists of Chairperson Chris Wilber, Treasurer Debbie Dunn, Secretary John O’Reilly, retired RCMP Faye Peach, Linda Wilson and our Community Policing Officer. Other groups under the umbrella are Citizens on Patrol, Safe Seniors, Victims Services, and MADD. We are also affiliated with our local Fire Department and EMO. The groups work well together for fundraising and community awareness events. We have a wonderful group of volunteers and receive a lot of support from our local RCMP.

HALIFAX

The Halifax Board of Crime Stoppers is an active group that meets the second Monday of each month from 7-8 p.m. We have 17 active board members plus Liaisons from the Halifax Police and the Military Police. The main focus of the board remains to be awareness. We hold several awareness events throughout the year. We have an annual Shred- it Event/ Barbeque, with a Shred It truck on site, as our attempt to prevent identity fraud. We take part is as many local parades as possible including Christmas and Natal Day. We have tables at Police Week events held by both RCMP and Halifax Police. We hold an annual Awareness and fund Dallas Reddy raising event called the Battle of Wits. We thank all of the participants who faithfully follow us each year. We will continue with our efforts to make the Board Chair, Halifax Halifax area a safer place to live, conduct business and raise our families. We believe that everyone deserves to feel safe in our community. I would like to thank my board of tireless volunteers who constantly support me. I would also like to thank our partners, JACK 92.9 fm, Shred It International ULC, Wilsons Home Heating, Bedford Comons Canadian Tire, Atlantic Superstore, and Halifax Waste for their ongoing support and donations.

Lunenburg County Crime Stoppers had a very successful year this past year, and we thank all of our nine board members for their dedication over the year. Dedicated volunteers are what make Crime Stoppers so successful. Our board was created in 1987, and has been going strong ever since. We typically meet once a month to organize activities and fundraisers and break for July and August. This past year we held many functions over the year from parades, festivals, promoting awareness to the public by setting up booths at the Bridgewater Mall. We recently have three new members and will be a great Janice Rafuse addition to our board. Board Chair, Lunenburg We participated in the Michelin Seniors Expo, the Michelin Health and Safety Fair in June and handed out promotional material to people to raise the awareness. On July 1st we participated in the New Germany parade, attended the Bridgewater exhibition parade and participated in the Lunenburg pirate festival. Also, we partner up with the Bridgewater Police and participate in the Bridgewater Christmas Parade and then the Lunenburg Christmas Parade. We handed out text pamphlets at a roadside check in Bridgewater with the RCMP Cookville Detachment. As the Chair for the Lunenburg County Crime Stoppers, I take this as a great challenge to increase the awareness of Crime Stoppers in Lunenburg County this past year and the years to come.

PICTOU

Pictou Board NSCS meets on a monthly basis in their new space provided by the Westville Policing services. We are looking forward to a busy and productive year with several projects in our plans. We have seen a steady rise in the number of calls we receive each month which means that citizens of Pictou County are aware of our program and feel comfortable using it. We participated in the Lobster Carnival parade so that the public could see us taking part in activities to promote awareness. We held a very successful Road Awareness Day in conjunction with the local police departments and the RCMP. We are also holding some fund raising Margie MacDonald activities to raise money as well as awareness and take the opportunity to try to recruit new members. Board Chair, Pictou County Member Don Taylor has also been doing presentations for our Board on technology and the use of texting using cell phones which we would like to take into the schools. Don and Sgt. Howie Dunbar have also been doing presentations to seniors on Frauds and Scams and will continue this in the fall. Our police and RCMP members have been discussing the DARE program which is delivered to Middle School students in the town schools but not in the rural schools. We have been trying to devise a program that could be delivered to all Middle School students. One of our members attended the National Dare Conference in Georgia and has brought back some valuable information and tips. The conference also stressed topics which should be discussed with students at this age.

WEST HANTS

I would like to extend greetings to all from our beautiful corner of Hants County as we all know as home. We have had a very busy and exciting year as we have tried new and interesting projects this year. We started out our year in March by holding a "Stuff the police cruiser" event for our local food bank, and in 6 hours raised a total of 250 pounds of food and $375 dollars in cash, as well as meeting lots of people and raising our awareness in the community. We had a booth set up at the seniors expo at our local legion in May with a beautiful gift basket to give away, donated by a past member. Again awareness was our main goal. We attended Wade Smith the RCMP'S awareness week which was well attended. We decided as a group to take on a fairly big and new project, which entailed setting up a booth at the Board Chair, West Hants Hants County Exhibition, which by the way is 252 years old. We had thousands of people through our booth. And with the help of a local business, we had a beautiful gift basket of hair products, facial masks, nail polish and other products that was donated to us to have a free draw. We also had a lawn tractor which we secured from our local Central hardware store, that we were selling tickets on for $10 dollars each with only 250 being sold. Approximately twice as many students reported being victims of verbal bullying than engaging in verbal bullying themselves. No significant differences between girls and boys were found in this type of bullying.

• Social bullying: Students who engage in social bullying are not likely to get caught. Instead, their harmful intentions are masked because the consequences cannot always be seen or heard. In one Canadian study, 41% of all students in grades 4 to 7 reported that they were victims of bullying and/or bullied others monthly. 7% of these students said they were victims of social bullying on a weekly basis, and 2% reported that they bullied other students socially on a weekly basis. Girls are more likely than boys to bully socially and to be victims of this form of bullying.

A recent self report survey on delinquency among Toronto youth indicates that 16% of youths in grades 7 to 9 had been bullied on more than 12 occasions during the year prior to the survey.
