Ride Operations Team Member Handbook Ride Operations Team Member Handbook Adventureland Long Island 2245 Route 110, Farmingdale NY 11735 Phone: 631-694-6868 ext. 0 Email: [email protected] Employee Facebook: Alfie Adventureland Staff Twitter: @AlfieAdventureland Business Facebook: Adventureland Long Island Adventureland Twitter:@AdventurelandLI ~ 1 ~ WELCOME TO THE RIDES DEPARTMENT, WHERE SAFETY ALWAYS COMES FRIST!! This is a brief overview for the ride operators regarding the basics of ride operations. You will go through a more formal and detailed training during your orientation and when you are assigned to your first ride. If you have any questions please stop and ask us. As a team member in the rides department you must always remember that safety always comes first!! Responsibilities of a Rides Team Member It is part of your job to see that our guests are paying to use our facilities. Adventureland uses tickets and bracelets as proof of purchase; this means that all guests must present a valid ride bracelet or the appropriate number of tickets in order to go on our rides. Customers cannot switch bracelets. The procedures for bracelets and tickets will be gone over in depth during your orientation. Please note that any ride team member found to be allowing guests on their ride without tickets or bracelets will be subject to disciplinary action. Any team member who is found to be giving guests, friends, or family tickets will be terminated immediately we have a zero tolerance theft policy. Adventureland team members are entitled to receive two (2) POP bracelets each month you work at the park, they are yours to do what you want. You can use them or give them away. When you wish to use your bracelets simply notify a supervisor or City Hall. Focus on Safety One of your most important responsibilities as an Adventureland rides team member is safety. Every day you will be involved in situations where safety will be an important issue. Although safety is built into our attractions you play an important role in ensuring that all of our riders as well as fellow team members remain safe throughout their stay at the park. Our rides have safety mechanisms that are designed and maintained to provide maximum protection for both you and our guests. Below you will find some safety rules for amusement ride operators: 1. Test run and inspect the entire ride before opening your ride to guests. If you notice anything that does not appear to be working correctly you must notify a supervisor and keep your ride closed until you are told otherwise. ~ 2 ~ 2. Clean your station at the start and end of your shift, there should never be garbage or lost items left behind. 3. Assist guests on and of the rides when necessary, especially small children. The parents want YOU to make sure that their child is safe when on your ride. 4. Make sure that all safety belts and bars are properly fastened and secured prior to the start of your ride. You must double check for accuracy. 5. Balance your ride if you were trained to do so. This important for both the longevity of the ride as well as safety of our riders. 6. Make sure that parents and all non-riders are outside of the fenced area prior to starting operation of your ride. 7. Make sure that guests secure all loose items including hats and glasses. We cannot and will not stop park operations to retrieve any lost items. 8. If a ride is being misused by guests, stop the ride until the situation is corrected. Do not allow guests to intimidate you. You know your job and ride better than they do. 9. Intoxicated, pregnant or injured guests should not be permitted to ride. If there is any question please notify a supervisor. 10. Eating and drinking is not permitted on any ride at any time. 11. If any unusual noise or condition develops while the ride is operating: Stop operation of your ride and notify a supervisor or manager. 12. Keep your eyes on the ride at all times while the ride is in motion so you are prepared in the event of an emergency. 13. Always know what to do in the event of an emergency. Make sure you understand the functions of the Start, Stop, and Emergency buttons. 14. The E-Stop is for emergencies only. It is important that you understand exactly what your E- Stop does prior to hitting it. You will be fully trained on each and every ride you are expected to operate. 15. Know the height restrictions for your ride… height requirements for the rides can be found on the next page. PLEASE NOTE – OSHA FEDERAL STANDARDS MANDATE that you always stand by controls of your ride! Watch your ride as you start it and as it is in motion – Always double check safety belts – lastly, USE YOUR COMMON SENSE! • ACE's Scandinavian Sojourn
ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums.

Amusement Park Physics Amusement Park Physics and the new Secondary School Curriculum In the past 18 months, the educational system has seen a shift in the science curriculum and changes to how that curriculum is delivered. The current curriculum is more inquiry based with a focus on questioning, predicting, communication, planning and conducting investigations. In addition, students are asked to analyse not only the data they collect, but also the process that was used to collect the data. The curriculum for Science 8 has changed. Although forces are not directly in the current Grade 8 curriculum, inquiry and investigation are at the forefront. Amusement Park Physics can now be applied to any number of classes as they all include an inquiry / investigative component. Teachers are able to adapt or enhance the curriculum packages currently supplied by Amusement Park Physics as they see fit. This gives you, as an educator, tremendous flexibility in terms of how you and your class spend your time at Playland. You could focus on one ride and do an in-depth study or perhaps investigate similar rides and compare them.
