My advice is not to bother reading this one. Trust me on this, just go with it and all shall becomes groovy. Aug 26, Thomas rated it really liked it. JavaScript seems to be disabled in your browser. There are two sides to any quarrel Lastly, Weber's Universe of Honor Harrington provides the background on the science and history of the evolution of space ships and the colonization of the universe. We also get a primer on the physics and math behind the methods of travel used in the books. Covers how the young Stephanie Harrington became the first person to discover treecats. Up to the last story which I just fast forwarded through to find something interesting, the reader didn't help there either. Waste of time. It was a particular frustration to know that we were surrounded by an ocean I could not access for all this blasted iron. Must have for fans of Honoverse! Zuko's mouth pursed and his voice sounded raw and tired as he responded, "Do I really need to answer that? Stirling fills in a bit of the unrest in the People's Republic and fills the role of Havenite story. The stories from others, like Drake, aren't outside the main story. Many of his stories have military, particularly naval, themes, and fit into the military science fiction genre. The three narrators, Victor Bevine, L. Out of the collection as a whole, my favourite part was definitely A Beautiful Friendship. I may never buy honor again. Feedback appreciated, especially since I know what I like, but I'm not extremely familiar with others' tastes in the 'ship. Decision My blood ran cold as I wondered whether he had finally decided to kill me. Information Later this short story was turned into spin off series for teenage readers: Star Kingdom series It was very interesting. One where people follow the rules. What price victory? More Than Honor Writer Jul 30, M rated it it was ok. The appendix-style info at the end of the collection from Weber is good, but certainly of No interest to anyone not already an Honor fan. May 27, Bill rated it really liked it. First story is just the first few chapters of A Beautiful Friendship. No trivia or quizzes yet. This book is a collection of three short stories. David Webber later lengthened this short story into a novel, which now is on my to-read list. Not new stories! Helena St. Weber, David, David Drake, and S. Three or four days had passed, I had decided, by the time I saw my captor again. Parish The ship had warned me something was coming. The events take place during one of the coup d'etat attempts. Second story was boring AF. View 1 comment. Other editions. Fire in the forest — and a cry for help from a trapped and desperate alien mother! This Day In History. Lieutenant Travis Long of the Royal Manticoran Navy is the sort of person who likes an orderly universe. The hottest military science-fiction series of all time continues. Generally only of interest to those who like seeing the glossed over details of a background, but quite interesting for them for the most part. I would listen to the author again, I just feel slighted by this release, I feel like they are using his name to advance the careers of the other writers on my dime. Cartoons Avatar: Last Airbender. Last section was a bunch of dry data that I thought was pretty interesting and is why this book gets two stars instead of one star. I feel very cheated! It does leave me to wonder what will happen next, where they are concerned. I forgot my password Password Reset. Interesting collection of short stories. This story read much like a Lt. He frequently places female leading characters in what have been traditionally male roles. Repression The most interesting part of the story, the long-lost Alphane society which forms the spine of the story, never really develops. The third story is actually the untold story of a coup attempt in the Peoples Republic of Haven. Stirling has his own successful postapocalyptic series of Emberverse novels, and Drake is himself an icon of military science fiction. After the disastrous attack on the Manticoran home system by forces unknown, the Royal Manticoran Navy stands on the brink of collapse. Close Working Adding to library failed. Growing up, Travis Uriah Long yearned for order and discipline in his life Reminds me of history class This is a good book for anyone who plans to write within the Honorverse theme. More Than Honor Reviews A Beautiful Friendship is the Weber and the treecat story and it's quite good. Leary story rather than Hammer Slammers I had to believe that Sokka would live, that Aang would find help for him, and that they would be able to find me again without falling prey to Zuko's relentless hunt. Many of his stories have military, particularly naval, themes, and fit into the military science fiction genre. David Drake. That highlights one of the few problems with the Honor-verse and all of the stories. Details if other :. Live TV. We hear the back story to Honor's distant relative who settled on Sphinx. But, it covered events we already knew about. Lucia St. The appendix-style info at the end of the collection from We Meh. A Beautiful Friendship David Weber I really liked this story, which chronicles the first meeting between humans and treecats. Stirling follows Honor Among Enemies ; an attempted coup on Haven Must have for fans of Honoverse! There may be more Known Space stories now by others than by Niven. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys short sci-fi stories. Lastly, Weber's Universe of Honor Harrington provides the background on the science and history of the evolution of space ships and the colonization of the universe. Negotiation Apart from the first story - probably for completists only I saw a small light through the seal of the door, and when I tried to touch the handle, I had to snatch my hand back from the heat. The plot and pace of story is just perfect. Stirling fills in a bit of the unrest in the People's Republic and fills the role of Havenite story. Leaving me with that cryptic warning, he slipped back out into the corridor. Trust me on this, just go with it and all shall becomes groovy. I like the spin offs and thse short stories are fabulous for sci-fi shorts. Do you remember Honor's story about "missing celery"? David Weber. This book is a collection of three short stories. At least one publisher created a whole fake biography for a phony French writer of routine space opera. The perfect back story Confession: I'm an Honorverse fan. We are not allowed to sell this product with the selected payment method. Four short stories in David Weber's Honorverse. View Larger Image. We are sorry. If you read both, you'll clearly see exactly what I'm talking about, the characters here are prototypes of the main characters of that series. Get A Copy. More Than Honor Read Online I like the spin offs and thse short stories are fabulous for sci-fi shorts. Zuko barked out a mirthless laugh. Eventually, I staggered. Read more What reaction did this book spark in you? The ship had warned me something was coming. Mar 19, Vickey rated it it was ok Shelves: sci-fi , space- opera. More like 3. There are two sides to any quarrel I fought to not flinch away from its hideousness and intensity. Also, I quickly reminded him, he and Sokka, together, would be much more likely to save me while Zuko lingered here, awaiting a rescue attempt, than we would be of trying to chase him all the way to the Fire Nation, to which Zuko would surely flee the moment the Avatar was secured. Other Editions Aug 26, Thomas rated it really liked it. The first book might fit in between Honor 8 and 9 of a trilogy and then overlap the next two honor books. The boy had looked disconsolately between me and my brother as if trying to choose who would live and who would die. The last entry on the workings of the universe was Following GR's rating system, this collection was ok. It's a party - and you're invited! I had taken down a good many of them before I had tired, and they left nothing to chance. Paperback , pages. Boot camp is rough and frustrating; his first ship assignment lax and disorderly; and with the Star Kingdom of Manticore still recovering from a devastating plague, the Navy is possibly on the edge of budgetary extinction. Short Stories. It's not so great as a relaxing sci-fi read.

1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate).

THE TECHNOLOGY OF CONSENT: AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND CULTURAL CRISIS IN THE 1980s A Dissertation Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright by Chad Andrews 2016 Cultural Studies Ph.D. Graduate Program May 2016 ABSTRACT The Technology of Consent: American Science Fiction and Cultural Crisis in the 1980s Chad Andrews The 1980s in the United States have come into focus as years of extensive ideological and socioeconomic fracture. A conservative movement arose to counter the progressive gains of previous decades, neoliberalism became the nation’s economic mantra, and détente was jettisoned in favour of military build-up. Such developments materialized out of a multitude of conflicts, a cultural crisis of ideas, perspectives, and words competing to maintain or rework the nation’s core structures. In this dissertation I argue that alongside these conflicts, a crisis over technology and its ramifications played a crucial role as well, with the American public grasping for ways to comprehend a nascent technoculture. Borrowing from Andrew Feenberg, I define three broad categories of popular conceptualization used to comprehend a decade of mass technical and social transformations: the instrumental view, construing technology as a range of efficient tools; the substantive view, insisting technology is an environment that determines its subjects; and a critical approach,
