They posted a 9-2 record in dual meets, won the Yankee Conference championship with an undefeated league record, and literally swamped the opposition in the New England Championships, winning by 336.5 points (675 to 338.5) over the second place team. Incredibly, Maine swimmers finished first in 15 events with Don Winant estalishing three new New England records and Jim Smoragiewicz posting two new NE records. It was the most one-sided meet in the history of the New England association. Doug Burnham, Kevin Riley, John Judge, Peter Ferragher, Jim LaRochelle, Ron Pospisil, Bob Stedman, Lance Graham, Winant and Smoragiewicz all were first team, all-Yankee Conference.     Fcctball Coming off a terrific 1995 season the Blue Hens re- turned to the field facing a challenge of holding on to the Yankee Conference Title. With twelve senior letter winners returning, the football team set their goals high. Opening the 1996 season at home against Lehigh Uni- versity, the Blue Hens came out with an awesome rush- ing and passing attack, eventually winning the game 49-7. The offense and defense played with a certain magic. Unfortunately, that magic did not last when the Hens were shut out by Villanova the following week. Af- ter being drilled in practice, the Hens rolled to a six game winning streak. This gave the team five conference wins over Maine, Boston University, Richmond, Northeast- em, and JMU, and a non-conference win over West Ch- ester. The Blue Hens took over first place in the Yankee Conference and headed to Williamsburg, VA to face William and Mary. The team suffered their second loss of the season, losing a close game in overtime 10-7. This dropped the Hens down a notch as they prepared for Division I-A Navy. After losing in a noble effort, the Blue Hens returned home with a 7-3 record and facing a must win situation. A loss would knock them out of the playoff picture. Rhode Island was coming to town seeking revenge for last year's loss to Delaware in the Yankee Conference title game. After a long and hard battle, UD pulled out a victory and finished the regular season with an 8-3 record.

    This years' Fightin' Blue Hen Football team finished another winning sea- son with a 7-3-1 record. With their seventh straight winning season, the Blue Hens ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Division. Despite a slow start, Delaware was unbeaten in their last six games and almost captured the Yankee Conference Offensive triple crown for the second Seniors Lead Team To 3rd Place Division Finish straight year. Nine seniors lead the Blue Hens during the season: Daryl Brown, Pat Hulhern, Matt Smith, Chris Moore, Doug Flower, Rob Higbee, Jason Sluser, Greg Ventresca, and Mike Sye. Daryl Brwon ended an outstanding collegiate career with 4,587 rushing yards, 50 career touchdowns, and 308 career points. He set 14 school records and made 3 NCAA I-AA playoff appearances. Pat Hulhern closed his career by starting his 50th career game to tie the university record and earned All- Yankee honors at linebacker in 1992 and 1993. A few freshman made names for themselves this year. Ralph D'Angelo broke the university record for freshman single season tackles with 126 tack- les. Norman Coleman finished with 8.7 yards per carry. Courtney Batts set school records for yards receiving in a game (206 yards), in a season (691 yards) and pass reception in a season (27 passes). Freshman placekicker Sean Leach hit 29 straight extra points. Scott White ranked fourth among Yankee Conference punters. As Tubby Raymond, the Blue Hens head coach, celebrated his 26th win- ning season of the 30 seasons he has been head coach, Blue Hen fans could not help but give credit to him and each player for such a successful year.

After spending the past four years in a dual role of baseball outfielder and football cornerback, Hopkins' eligibility has finally expired. He went out in style, earning yet another varsity letter as one of the standouts of Barry Gallup's gridiron gang. The Huskies recently completed a 4-7 campaign. Hopkins was once again among the Yankee Conference's top defensive backs, picking off a team-high five passes while recording 46 tackles in 1995. He led the conference in interceptions in 1 994 and finished fourth this season. His most productive afternoon came on Sept. 23 when he helped fuel an NU comeback against Massachusetts, making a season-high 1 3 stops and adding an interception. He was the leader of NU's secondary, which surrendered a league-low average of 1 36.6 passing yards per game. Against UMass, NU allowed the Minutemen a mere 23 yards through the air. Hopkins batted .329 over 46 games and led the Huskies in hits (51) this past spring for Coach Neil McPhee's baseball bunch. NU will miss Hopkins' aggressive style, both on the basepaths (54 career stolen bases) and in the secondary (1 6 career interceptions). He holds the NU single-season record for stolen bases, swiping 27 in 1 994.

The reason: the program was discontinued twice, once between 1910 and 1920, an absence of 10 seasons, and again between 1929 and 1935, an absence of six additional seasons. Reasons for the interruptions varied, ranging from finances to a lack of local opponents (Maine was the only college in the state to have a team in the mid- 1920s), to facility problems. The program was “re-born” for good in 1935, although only a single game was played in the ’35-‘36 season. It is worth noting that Bill Kenyon, a veteran coach of other UM teams, volunteered to coach the team without compensation in order to get the program reinstated. He continued to do so for six more years even though his salary did not reflect his additional duties! It is also interesting to note that while a varsity basketball program was absent for 16 seasons, the University sponsored a freshman team during those years, primarily due to the availability of local opponents in the form of high schools and prep schools where basketball was gaining a strong degree of interest.
