Troligen är det därför det finns så många åsikter om Wikipedia; lite som den där berättelsen om några blinda män som undersöker en elefant. En av dem känner på elefantens sida och tror att det är en vägg. En annan känner på snabeln och tror att det är ett rep. En tredje känner på en bete och föreställer sig att det är ett spjut. Själv hoppas jag kunna beskriva hela elefanten. Efter fyra år som skribent på svenskspråkiga Wikipedia, tre år som dess presskontakt och snart ett år som ordförande för Wikipedias svenska stödförening, har jag en god chans att lyckas. I arbetet med den här boken har jag pratat med dussintals wikipedianer, rest hundratals mil, sorterat genom tusentals bok- och internetsidor efter ytterligare insikter om hur Wikipedia fungerar. Det här är vad jag har hittat. *** Inför det amerikanska presidentvalet 2008 rapporterade den anrika tidningen The Washington Post: ”Skriver man en kandidats namn på Google så finns en Wikipediaartikel bland de första resultaten, vilket gör att de texterna i stort sett är lika viktiga som vilken annons som helst för att definiera kandidaten.” Det är svårt att tänka sig att man skulle kunna byta ut 'Wikipedia' mot 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' i det citatet. Ändå är båda uppslagsverk. Encyclopaedia Britannica räknas dessutom vanligen som mer tillförlitlig än Wikipedia. Hur kan det då komma sig att The Washington Post skriver 'Wikipedia'? Kan det ha att göra med den ”informationsrevolution” som vissa menar att Wikipedia utgör? Att Wikipedia är en av de största gräsrotsrörelserna någonsin, med flera miljoner deltagare runtom i världen? I en tid när det finns nyhetskanaler som sänder dygnet runt, och tidningar på internet, har någon tid eller lust att vänta på att redaktionen för ett uppslagsverk ska väga informationen på silvervåg innan man publicerar en rad? Vi behöver ju någon plats där världen förklaras: ett nutida uppslagsverk. 12 Å andra sidan är det lätt att inse Wikipedias svaghet: med sådan snabbhet uppstår det lätt felaktigheter. Därmed kommer vi till en samvetsfråga. Givetvis är jag partisk när det gäller Wikipedia: jag skulle knappast ha lagt ner så mycket tid som jag gjort på Wikipedia, för att inte tala om skrivit den här boken, om jag inte hade gillat Wikipedia. Mitt mål är ändå att vara neutral. Jag tänker inte släta över de problem Wikipedia har (där har vi en lång lista…), och jag tänker inte förtiga de konflikter som varit. Det finns flera skäl till det. Ett är att det inte hade blivit en intressant bok för andra än närmast sörjande. Ett annat skäl är att det inte ligger för mig. Jag är dålig på att ljuga. Men framför allt är det en del av Wikipediakulturen att vara saklig. Det finns till exempel inte mycket kritik mot Wikipedia från allmänheten som inte kommit från Wikipediagemenskapen långt tidigare. När allmänheten inser problemet har det ofta redan rättats till ― och ersatts av nya problem… Vi wikipedianer gillar helt enkelt att förbättra saker. Det kanske är därför vi sysslar med något som aldrig lär bli klart. Nu hoppas jag bara att du blir en av oss.

This survey was completed by a total of 16,558 respondents. We excluded some of these respondents from the survey as part of our data cleaning process. The variables that were used as cleaning criteria and the number of respondents who qualified these criteria are mentioned below: Condition Respondents All Respondents 16,558 Wiki URLs 15,710 Read Wikipedia on Mobile (B2B)* 14,435 Those who selected less than 5 languages (B1A) 14,035 Those who selected less than 19 activities (B2A) 13,952 Those who did not select the maximum response of 999 (B4) 13,925 Those who selected up to 5 Apps (B10) 13,797 Those who did not give same rating to all stubs or gave lowest rating to all stubs (D3) 12,354 Those who did not give same rating to all stubs (D4) 11,615 Those who did not give same rating to all stubs (D7) 10,947 Those who did not give same rating to all stubs (D8) 9,026 Those aged between 12 and 90 (G1a) 9,012 Those who took more than 5 minutes to complete the survey 9,011 Those who followed all skip logic conditions and gave all necessary responses 9,007 After removing these respondents, we were left with a total of 9,007 respondents. This survey had an almost equal representation of editors (47%) and non-editors (53%).
