This prolific author is fascinating! There is one story that stays with me more than others "The punishment" About an Indian man who accuses his wife of a murder, only because he wants to save his brother. The key of the story is that he loves his wife with all his heart, but when he has to make a decision in a split second, all the education behind him charges its toll: "a woman is disposable, a brother isn't". It is so horrible to think that the young men of that book were educated in such a w This prolific author is fascinating! It is so horrible to think that the young men of that book were educated in such a way that they can sacrifice their wives because they are just disposable items. This tome contains Tagore's letters, essays, poems, short stories and plays. I only read the essays, but they were truly sublime, with so many rich metaphors conveying deep truths. They may with apparent reason measure the highest limit of their possibilities by the limited standard of their nests. But, in the meanwhile, they find that their food is not grown inside those nests, it is brought to them across the measureless blue. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of modern India. A Pirali Brahmin from Calcutta, Tagore wrote poetry as an eight-year-old. At age sixteen, he released his first substantial poems under the pseudonym Bhanusi?ha ("Sun Lion"), which were seized upon by literary authorities as long-lost classics. He graduated to his first short stories and dramas—and the aegis of his birth name—by 1877. As a humanist, universalist internationalist, and strident anti- nationalist he denounced the Raj and advocated independence from Britain. This 'rural sojourn' in East Bengal opened up before his eyes a new world tbat had remained so far unexplored and inaccessible to him --- a world that opened the floodgate of creativity in him, especially in tbe realms of short stories and poems. It was during this phase that his 'artistic self was virtually reborn by this passage from an urban elite existence to humble village life' (Ghosh 9). This phase is therefore considered to be tbe second important -milestone in his creative career. In his poem '"1~19f0!' from C'l1<ml i5li't Tagore expresses his fond desire to write 'story after story' about the simple and ordinary aspects of human life. He was the first among the Indian writers to introduce the short story as a literary art form, and to write, in tbis new-found genre, stories about tbe life of the common people he saw around him during his 'sojourn' in East Bengal.
