~ 11 ~ White Letter Recipients

Fall

East Boys’ Soccer – Christopher Fredricks (University of Michigan) Christopher is a two year varsity letter winner and two year starter. Having established a cumulative GPA of 4.13, Christopher is an officer in the National Honor Society and is also a member of the Italian Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and DECA. Christopher is an exemplary multi-sport varsity athlete as well as a great teammate and competitor. Christopher is considering Georgetown, Boston College, UNC, and the University of Michigan.

West Field Hockey – Sarah Heacox (Stony Brook University) Sarah is a natural born leader. As one of our team captains, she was an integral part of our success this year. Sarah scored three goals this season and had two assists. She was named All-County Honorable Mention. She excels in the classroom as well as on the field. She is also a 2012 National Fast Pitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete. Sarah is a member of Athletes Helping Athletes, National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and National Italian Honor Society. She is a two year Medal Winner in Science Olympiads, as well as a classically trained piano player. She is a truly outstanding all around student athlete. Best of luck Sarah!!

East Girls’ Soccer – Elizabeth Brierton (SUNY College at Geneseo) The winner of the White Letter in girls’ soccer at East this year has a 4.27 GPA and has been selected as a member of the Suffolk County Girls’ Soccer Coaches Association All-Academic team. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. As a captain of this year’s soccer team, she exhibited extraordinary leadership and could be counted upon to handle anything the coaching staff requested of her. She is a quiet leader but a fierce competitor. She leads through her actions and not her words. A few times in a coaching career a player comes along who is, not only a gifted athlete, but a natural leader; a leader that the other players respect because of her fairness, her compassion, her commitment, and her talent. This year’s White Letter winner in Girls’ Soccer at East is just a person. West Boys’ Volleyball – Brandon Felice (junior) Brandon is the consummate team player. Brandon may not be the most physically gifted player on the team, but he is starting to understand the mental part of the game. This coupled with the physical gifts he does possess have made him a complete volleyball player. Brandon is actually a two sport athlete in the fall, also playing on an Ice Hockey team. Off the court, Brandon is a model student and is currently working towards becoming an Eagle Scout. It is amazing that he finds the time to fit all of this into his schedule. He is very intense and you can see that this drive will take him far in life.

East Girls’ Tennis – Nalli Muthiah (Case Western Reserve University) Nalli is one of the most accomplished and well-rounded student athletes that have ever played in the Smithtown East Girls’ Tennis program. She has been an All-League selection in every year of her four year varsity career. Nalli has been instrumental in the long term success of the program, which includes a League II Championship and two trips to the County quarter finals in the playoffs.

Nalli maintains a 4.2 gpa and has taken twelve AP classes. She is a member of the National, French, Math and English honor societies. She was selected as a team co-captain for the 2013 season. Nalli is the first chair in the symphonic band. She is also a participant of Stony Brook University science and research program. She is an Intel scholar. Nalli has upheld the highest standards of a student-athlete while at East. She is most interested in UVA, Colombia and Duke University. ~ 12 ~

East Boys’ Volleyball – William Engellenner (Northwestern University) Over the course of his high school career, Will has accumulated an overall high school GPA of 4.46. Will is a coach’s dream, in that he does whatever is asked of him without question. Will leads by example on and off the court. Whatever path Will chooses in life, we know that he will be successful. The program is very proud of what he has accomplished and pleased to announce him as our team White Letter Award winner.

Girls’ Swimming – Lara Sarett (University of Maine) Lara is the longest tenured member of the team, joining as a seventh grader and swimming for six consecutive seasons. Lara is a perfectly well-rounded student athlete. She has been our team’s best breastroke swimmer the past few years, while also actively participating in community service, school clubs and maintaining academic excellence as a student. This season, through her perseverance, Lara finished 3rd in the 100 breastroke at the County Championship Meet and qualified for the State Championships. Lara is a DECA officer, club historian and will be competing in their state competition this March. Outside of school, Lara is very active as a volunteer at the Gurwin Jewish Rehabilitation Center and Nursing home, providing hours of comfort and companionship for elderly patients. This past spring, she also completed an internship at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead. Part of her responsibilities included giving visitors lectures about the sharks that are exhibited at the museum. Lara has yet to commit to a college, but has the University of Maine at the top of her list. She plans to continue her swimming while studying for a career in medicine or marine science.

East Football – Lucas Hoffmann (University of Miami) On the football field Lucas lead by example. When watching film the coaches would use him as an example of putting the drill in the game for other players to model. Lucas demonstrates this in the classroom as well as he puts the knowledge taught by his teachers into his assignments. This is reflected in his 4.26 GPA and 1980 SAT score. His effort and execution in the classroom has also helped Lucas be inducted into the Math, Spanish and National Honor Society.

West Girls’ Volleyball – Alana Fitzgerald (Northeastern University) As a captain of the team, Alana is the perfect example of what a student-athlete and team leader should be by maintaining a 4.06 GPA in the classroom. She always strives to be the best that she can be, both on and off the court. Alana proved herself valuable to the team this year by playing multiple positions. On the court this year she earned All-League Honorable Mention; however it is her positive attitude and leadership abilities in both practices and games that will be missed the most. Whenever any of our players were having a tough time, whether it was on the court or off, Alana would be there to support them in any way possible. It is that type of contribution to the team, one that cannot be measured on any stat sheet, which will be greatly missed next year.

Boys’ Cross Country – Eric Melcer (Ithaca College) Eric has been a member of the Cross Country team for three years. He is a very serious athlete with a very strong work ethic. He has a GPA of over 4.0 and earned Academic All-County this season. Eric was the second runner for the team the entire season. He ran 16:11 for the 2.8 mile course and 18:52 at the county meet. He ran 16:50 at the Brown Invitational. His leadership and personality will be missed by the entire team next year.

West Girls’ Soccer – Cayla Faviero (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) Cayla is a two year varsity soccer athlete that has made the highest honor roll all four years at High School West with a 4.02 GPA. Cayla is a member of both the Spanish Honor Society and the Math Honor Society where she also serves as the public relations officer. Cayla’s ability to balance the high demand of varsity athletics and the classroom was not only exceptional but also served as a terrific example for the underclassmen on the team. A role in which seemed to come naturally for Cayla as she willingly took a ~ 13 ~ special interest in supporting the younger girls on the team. Cayla could often be seen talking with and counseling them on what it takes be successful both on and off the field at the varsity level. A true leader of the highest character Cayla is an outstanding selection for the White Letter Award.

Girls’ Gymnastics – Amanda Salay (University of Delaware) This year’s white letter award winner is a senior who has been an integral member of the varsity team since the 9th grade. Amanda has become a true leader on the team playing an important part in helping to guide many of the younger gymnasts. Amanda is the kind of athlete the younger gymnasts look up to because of her work ethic. Amanda has been an All-League gymnast for the last three years and this year through her hard work and determination her scores were high enough to qualify for All-County honors. In the classroom, Amanda maintains over a 4.0 grade point average while taking many AP and honors classes. Amanda’s presence in the gym will be missed next year. Congratulations!

West Football – JJ Foley (Lehigh University) JJ is an outstanding defensive end and tight end. He was a leader on the football field and in the class room. JJ is a two sport athlete playing football and lacrosse. JJ earned All-Division 2nd team this year and he maintained a 4.23 GPA. JJ is also involved in other clubs after school and he is the president of the Athletes Helping Athletes club. He will attend Lehigh in the fall and continue to play Lacrosse.

Girls’ Cross Country – Samantha Manalastas (Manhattan College) Samantha has been a natural leader of the team over the last four years, culminating with her being a captain during the 2013 season. She has played a pivotal role in the team’s success and has earned four league titles as a member of the team. Samantha was instrumental in making the two separate schools feel like one solid, loving team. She works equally hard in the classroom as she does on the course, consistently earning Honors or High Honors and being a member of the Italian, Spanish, Math, and National Honor Societies.

West Girls’ Tennis – Erica Levy (Binghamton University) This years' winner of the white letter award for girls’ tennis at High School West is the epitome of a team leader. She was our team co-captain. She was a very powerful yet quiet force who set a standard of leadership that is hard to duplicate. Whether it was off the court putting up bulletin boards with her co- captains Grace Zhou and Eda Algur or on the court she will always give 150%. Ricki and her doubles partner Eda were undefeated during regular season play. A true scholar athlete with a gpa of 3.99 and a member of several national honor societies. We will miss her very much. She intends to study law and whatever college she chooses to attend will certainly be very lucky to have her.

East Field Hockey – Emily DeMarinis (Bentley University) Senior Emily has played varsity field hockey for four seasons. Emily was an outstanding role model for her field hockey team who voted her as a co-captain her senior year. Emily has a 3.93 GPA and is a member of the Italian, Business, and National Honor Societies. Emily is also a part of the Leadership Class. Emily will look to major in business and play lacrosse at Bentley University next year. East Girls’ Volleyball – Laura Pugliese (Indiana University) This year’s Smithtown East’s Girls volleyball white letter award winner is an All-County player. She led our team to an undefeated League Championship and County Championship. She has a 4.03 GPA and is a member of numerous clubs. She is looking at attending Indiana University or USC. She has been our starting outside the past two years with an overall team record of 37wins and 3 losses. She is what you want in a student athlete with the understanding of commitment and hard work to achieve success. She is the ultimate team player with a drive to be the best.

~ 14 ~ West Boys’ Soccer – Lucas Lyons (The University of Alabama) Lucas was a great teammate and we are very proud of his academic success. It is not easy finding the balance between the demands of playing a sport and the demands of high academics. Lucas has obviously found that balance. He truly embodies what a student athlete is. Lucas has also earned the respect from both his teammates and coaches and we are proud to honor him.

Winter

Boys’ Bowling – Cole DeMarco (sophomore) Cole is new to the team this year. He is a hard worker and made great progress during the season. He filled in during the wild card tournament and helped us to win a spot in the County Tournament. In the County Tournament he bowled his highest game of the year, 219 and averaged 203 for two games. He will be competing for a starting role next season. Academically he is an excellent student and maintains a gpa of 3.96.

East Boys’ Winter Track – Phil Royce (Boston College) Phil is a Captain, leader and dedicated member of the Track program. He is a true mentor to the other athletes on the team. Phil has a drive and determination to excel which runs through every aspect of his life. His leadership and work ethic made everyone else on the team better. He ran the 55m, 300m and was part of our 4 by 400m relay. Phil has a 4.31 GPA and scored 1960 on his SAT’s. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Team, German Honor Society and takes AP and College level classes. His presence, enthusiasm and leadership on the team will be missed next year.

West Girls’ Basketball – Jessica Meyers (Ramapo College of New Jersey) Jessica is a two-year varsity player who is an extraordinary teammate. She came to practice each day with a smile on her face and a willingness to work that every coach wishes his or her players possess. Jessica’s positive attitude and encouragement are infectious, as she helped teach some of the underclassmen in the program parts of our offenses and defenses. An honor student, Jessica participates in varsity lacrosse and many of the clubs that Smithtown West has to offer. Jessica will attend Ramapo College next fall and we wish her the best of luck as she brings her positive energy to a new place.

West Cheerleading – Danielle Valentino (University of Central ) Danielle is an athlete who has such passion and love for the sport of cheerleading. Danielle was selected as one of the captains for this season which was a very fitting role for her. Voted MVP by his teammates, Doug was a co-captain and the leading scorer in 2013. Doug was the team’s most effective offensive player and the team’s best all-around player. West Field Hockey – Allyson Kollmeier (Suffolk County Community College) Allyson was named All-County for Division II this year. Allyson was a standout player on and off the field this season. She was one of our team captains. Her playing style was extremely versatile. She played center midfield and center back, depending on where we needed her most. Allyson controlled the entire middle of the field during every single game. She has amazing stick skills and remarkable game sense. Her free hits up the middle of the field were so fierce that most teams could not stop them. She was an integral part of our offensive and defensive corners. She scored three goals this season and had two assists. She is a member of Italian Honor Society. Allyson will be playing Field Hockey for Dowling College next year. We wish her the best of luck in her college career and we are proud of her accomplishments!!

East Girls’ Soccer – Erin Vernillo (Queens College) The Booster Club MVP in girls’ soccer at East this year is a three year starter and has been All-League, All- Conference and All-County. She has led the team in scoring two of the last three seasons and was second in scoring this year. She was one goal off the lead this season and she missed six games with a broken collar bone. As a captain this season, she helped turn the team around from a 2-9-1 league season last year to a 9-2- 1 season this year. Her leadership was instrumental in keeping the team focused on the team’s goals. She was a leader on and off the field. She plans on attending LIU Post University on a full soccer scholarship next fall. West Boys’ Volleyball – Matthew Shanley (SUNY Oswego) Matthew was the only returning starter from last year’s playoff squad. Matt was injured this year the second day of tryouts, and was told that he could possibly miss the whole season. It would have been easy to write us off for the season. Matt would not have it. Matt missed only two weeks. Upon his return to the team, he instantly made everyone around him better, pushing us to an 8-6 record and a return trip to the playoffs. Matthew showed incredible patience this year working with only one other senior…the rest being sophomores and juniors. I hope Matthew realizes that his influence goes far beyond this season, that his work and influence will benefit our program for years to come.

East Girls’ Tennis – Olivia Faulhaber (freshman) Olivia is one of the most motivated tennis players that has ever played in the Smithtown East tennis program. During the 2013 season she expanded her role on the team by playing singles in twelve matches including two county playoff matches. She finished the season with a record of 11-1 in singles matches. This included an undefeated regular season in singles.

Olivia provided a great deal of leadership with tenacity and gritty play. She is the type of person who simply refuses to lose. She is a very accomplished student and maintains a 4.4 gpa. She is member of DECA and plays the viola in the music program. This talented freshman has a bright future on and off the tennis court. ~ 27 ~

East Boys’ Volleyball – Chris DiPaola (Binghamton University) Chris is an All-County and All-Academic Award recipient. Chris had the difficult task of running a team that was very inexperienced. He took on this task with aplomb. As a setter, he has the difficult task of making all the decisions on the court. Despite our road blocks Chris made all players feel confident that they could get the job done. He helped eased their discomfort by making sure that the he took control of the game for them. His presence will be missed, as will his hard work on and off the court.

Girls’ Swimming – Deirdre Connor (Marist College) Deirdre is the ultimate competitor, having never lost a race in the 500 yard freestyle during her entire three year career on the team. That span includes three League Championships, and three consecutive County Titles. Besides winning the County Title, Deirdre has also been the County runner-up for three seasons in the 200 freestyle. Deirdre has qualified for the States in each of the last three years in those events, and holds school records for both of those events and many others. In addition to her specialty events, Deirdre swam this season in any event necessary to give us the best chance at winning, usually with impressive wins over the other team’s best swimmers. In addition to her tremendous swimming skills, Deirdre has displayed integrity, diligence and leadership and as such, has been a role model for the girls on the team. West Girls’ Soccer – Gabrielle Scirica (Towson University) As a senior Gabby has been a varsity starter for the past four years. In those four years Gabby’s successes have always come from her continued improvement every year and her desire to grow each and every day as both a player and more importantly as a teammate. This year was no exception, as Gabby added to her role senior captain. The added responsibility of captain challenged Gabby this year to not only lead by her ~ 28 ~ abilities but to help to inspire her teammates. This was a challenge Gabby took very seriously and as a result success once again followed as she helped to lead her team to the County Semi-final game. The recognition for Gabby’s efforts also continued to follow as she won the “Golden Boot” award by leading the team in the role of scoring for the third year in a row and the “Helper” award for leading the team in assists. Again these efforts and ability brought Gabby a lot of attention by other coaches as well as she was recognized by S.C.G.S.C.A as the “League 2 Player of the year”, and All-State and by the NSCAA for All-East Regional Honors in both her Junior and senior years.

To pick a single player from this outstanding group was not an easy task. There is one factor involved which made this decision clear. Matt was not just our quarterback. He was the team leader and the glue that put all of our skilled players into action.

Matt suffered a season ending injury last year when he tore his ACL in our first game. This year Matt returned to football on a mission and his talent was recognized quickly after Newsday came to our first 4- way scrimmage. Matt had 1,386 yards passing and he threw 15 touchdown passes. He also had limited carries and rushed for 309 yards scoring ten touchdowns on the ground. This year Matt earned All- County and will always be remembered as one of the best quarterbacks to play in this town.

Girls’ Cross Country – Olivia Shenkman (junior) Although she battled a nagging foot injury throughout the fall, Olivia put in some very hard work over the summer to return strongly in her second year running cross country. Her excellent performances in the Tuesday dual meets earned her 1st Team All-League.

West Girls’ Tennis – Grace Zhao (Cornell University) This years’ winner of the MVP award for Girls Varsity Tennis finished with a record of 8-4, only losing to two girls all season at the number one spot. Throughout the season her help and inspiration showed the team the way to win their matches. It is safe to say that without her efforts we might not have finished with a 12-0 undefeated season and winning a League Championship. With a 4.1 gpa she is hoping to attend the University of Pennsylvania. But wherever she goes they will be very lucky to have her. We will miss her very much.

East Field Hockey – Sami Nizich (Adelphi University) Sami has been a member of the team for the past four years and is a two year captain. This season Sami led the team with points scoring 12 goals and 13 assists. Sami was the team’s starting center midfielder, # 1 option on offensive penalty corners, and was the teams all around best player. Sami’s season almost ended early due to an injury she suffered during a non-league game that resulted in 40 stitches and a broken nose. Sami’s leadership skills were put into play during the last league game of the season vs East Islip, which the ~ 29 ~ team needed to win to earn the league championship. Due to the injury Sami was sidelined for the game but her presence was felt by the team on the field where they scored the winning goal to win the league championship. Thankfully Sami was able to return for the playoffs where she played even better than the regular season. During the semi-final game, Sami assisted the tying goal and she had the winning goal in overtime vs Ward Melville, which led to the team advancing to the Suffolk County Championship. Sami played her heart out in the county final vs Sachem East but unfortunately came up on the losing end. Sami will continue to play field hockey at Adelphi University next fall. West Girls’ Basketball – Pamela Giordano (Iona College) As one of the captains of the team, she led by example, hitting key shots and playing tough, hard-nosed defense. She seemingly came out of nowhere to grab rebounds from the opponents that could very well have

~ 30 ~ ended up in fast breaks or put-backs. Pam’s energy on the court sparked the team when it was needed most and her words of encouragement to her teammates helped make them better. She averaged 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots a game, but the numbers do not indicate how truly valuable a player like Pam was to the team. As a junior Tyler played sparingly because of two then seniors playing the position ahead of him. As a result it fueled an already strong work ethic within Tyler to push himself towards success even more. In the off season Tyler dedicated himself to strength and agility training four days per week and practiced countless hours on the court to improve his skill. The product of Tyler’s hard work was averaging double figures in rebounding and points while shooting 51% from the field, and also winning the team Win Stat Award which is a cumulative total of hustle stats. His leadership, enthusiasm, work ethic, and genuine love for his basketball brothers were recognized by his teammate early in the season when they voted him as a unanimous Captain selection. ~ 31 ~ Tyler will clearly be deeply missed next year but we all look forward to seeing him continue his basketball and academic journey in college next fall.

Billy provided the spark and leadership that helped earn him the respect of his opposing coaches and teammates. Billy is a hard worker, always has a dirty uniform, and possesses the raw talents of speed, strength, and athleticism. He has the ability to dominate a game with his skill set at the plate, in the outfield, and on the bases. Billy was a welcomed addition and the difference maker we hoped he would be. Next year Billy will bring his talents to the Dominican University, where he will play basketball (AND HOPEFULLY BASEBALL). Congratulations and best of luck to you BILLY!

~ 36 ~ West Girls’ Lacrosse – Jessica Meyers (Ramapo College of New Jersey) Jessica has been a member of the Varsity Girls Lacrosse program since 10th grade. She shared the responsibility of goaltending for two years prior to her senior year. This year the responsibility lied solely on her shoulders and she handled it with poise and confidence. If you met Jess you would not think she was a lacrosse goalie she is quiet and soft spoken, but that personality helped her focus on the job on hand in net this year. Being the only goalie on varsity Jess couldn’t have a bad day, she had to come prepared to play each and every day. She faced 203 shots on goal and made 100 saves and ended her season with a 49% save percentage with a 7.66 goals against average. Jess will be playing in goal at Ramapo College next year.

East Boys’ Golf – Jesse Kovacs (SUNY @ Farmingdale) Jesse is a six-time letter winner, All-League, All-Conference and All-County selection. He has been a huge part of our success over the past years. Jesse’s stroke average has consistently been one of the lowest in the County. This year his stroke average was a one over par, 37. His success on the golf course over the past six years has been remarkable. His leadership, sportsmanship, friendship and fine play will always be remembered. We have been privileged to have Jesse in our program. He is one of the best players to ever play for Smithtown. As a golfer, and more importantly a person, Jesse will be missed

West Boys’ Lacrosse –Ryan Keenan (Pennsylvania State University) Ryan is a four year varsity starter and a Team Captain. Ryan is now the second all-time point scorer for Smithtown West (286) behind only James Pannell. His hard work, on and off the field, has earned him a scholarship to Penn State University. Ryan is a two time USILA All-American ; a three time All-Suffolk County selection and was voted by the Suffolk County Coaches as the 2014 Suffolk County Division 1 Attackman of the Year with 101 points (46 Goals 55 Assists). Selected to the 2014 Under Armour All- American Team and is a two time member of the Long Island Underclassman Under Armour All-American team. Ryan is three time selection to the Suffolk County Showcase Team. Nationally Ryan was the 2013 MVP of the Nike Ride Invitational (Top 40 Players in the Country). He is currently the Inside Lacrosse #13 ranked H.S. player in the Country. Ryan is a three sport Athlete, earning All-County honors in football and a starting role on the basketball team. Ryan excels in the classroom as well earning Honor Roll status.

East Girls’ Golf – Peyton Greco (sophomore) Peyton is a four year varsity letter winner, All-League and All-County selection. Peyton finished with our lowest stroke average and came in third place in the Individual County Championship with a two day total of 161. Peyton will be representing the Section XI State Tournament Team for the second straight year. Peyton possess much more than a good golf swing. She is intelligent, thoughtful, enthusiastic and hard-working. It has been a pleasure watching her grow into the player that she is today. Her leadership, sportsmanship, friendship and fine play helped us recapture the County Championship this year.

East Boys’ Lacrosse – Joe Saggese (Drexel University) For the last two seasons as our program has made significant strides reaching new heights, much of our success can be attributed to Attackman SR – Joe Saggese. Joe was our team’s version of a quarterback in football, and a point guard in basketball. On almost every offensive possession we have had the last 2 years the ball always found a way into his stick. He normally would play the X position behind the cage. Joe had a great ability to make the players around him better. Joe can feed, he can score, he can ride, he hustles all over the place and he is one of the toughest players that I have ever coached. Joe was part of what many consider to be the best attack combination in the county this year. Those 3 players had the opportunity to play and develop together for over 2 years. The chemistry they developed along with Joe’s ability on the lacrosse field was a major reason why the Smithtown East Bulls are Suffolk County’s 2014 Champions! Joe will continue his playing and educational career next fall at Drexel University
