Outside the Gurdwara

O Some are specially built but some are just old buildings which have been changed to use for worship in highly populated Sikh areas. A Gurdwara is recognised by the yellow or orange flag outside. The flag is called the Nishan it always flies above the level of the building for all to see. It’s a sign of welcome! There are four doors into a Gurdwara, known as the Door of Peace, the Door of Livelihood, the Door of Learning and the Door of Grace. These doors are a symbol that people from all four points of the compass are welcome, and that members of all four castes are equally welcome. It is not always a lavish and fancy building , the most important thing is to welcome people and to contain the .

O There is a worship room and a kitchen within the Gurdwara which have significant purpose. There's always a light on in a Gurdwara, to show that the Guru's Light is always visible and is accessible to everyone at any time. The Worship Room

O There is a main room where people gather to worship. This includes praying, singing and hearing readings or poems from the Guru Granth Sahib. The name of the worship room is the Diwan Hall. It is decorated with lights and there is a special throne for the Guru Granth Sahib. This is the Takht. It is a seat which shows that the book is treated with the same respect as a person. People leave gifts of money and food before the throne. Rules in the Gurdwara

Before entering all people should take off their shoes. It’s a sign of respect and cleanliness. There are rooms available to wash hands and feet before entering the worship room. In the Gurdwara everyone should cover their head as a sign of respect. In the worship room everyone will sit on the floor as a sign of equality. Men and women sit separately to avoid any distraction! O Sikhs do not regard any particular day of the week as a holy day, they usually go to a Gurdwara on Sundays as that fits the UK pattern of work. O When entering Sikhs will bow to the Guru Granth Sahib as the first thing they do, touching the floor with their forehead. This not only shows their respect but also indicates that they submit themselves to the the book. O After bowing to the Guru Granth Sahib a Sikh will greet the congregation in a low, quiet voice.
