ANNUAL REPORT 2012 A message from the Director & Chair of the Board

Deb Anderson Executive Director, Center STUDENT U is a college-access organization that believes all students in Dear Friends of Student U, for Real Estate Development, Kenan-Flagler Durham have the ability to succeed. In order to make this dream a reality, Business School At Student U we have a bold dream. We believe that all students in Durham, regardless of the color of their skin Student U creates a pipeline of services to support students through middle or how much money their parents have, can succeed. Years of data tell us we are wrong. Today only 72% of Mark Anderson Partner, McGuire Woods LLP and high school. By providing direct services during out-of-school time and low-income students in Durham are graduating on-time from high school. Today only 11% of low-income students who enroll in a four-year college graduate within six years. Yet, we at Student U have this dream. Chris Bailey Consultant/Entrepreneur advocating for students and families within schools, we ensure our students We expect 100% of our students to beat these statistics and not only complete high school, not only enroll in college, but to graduate from college. Yes, this might seem ambitious, but dreams do come true. Tony Brown Professor, Sanford Institute, develop the academic skills and personal well-being needed to beat the statistics and succeed in college and beyond. We know dreams do not come true overnight. They take years of dedication and determination, years of struggle and sacrifice. They take smaller, more manageable dreams coming true, smaller peaks being conquered, before Robb Cadwallader Real Estate truly reaching the top of the mountain. The ultimate dream of Student U, 100% graduation from college, has not Entrepreneur yet been realized. However, we have arrived at a peak along the way. We have created a sustainable organization that can impact the lives of its participants for years to come. Heidi Carter Chair, , Board of Education As we stand on this peak, we should be proud of the journey we have taken to get here. Over the past six years we have expanded from 50 to 285 students, from one full-time employee to four, from a budget of $95,000 Anthony L. Clay Director of Advancement, to one of $750,000. More important than this growth as an organization is the impact of this growth on our students. Through their years at Student U we have seen our students make significant gains in test scores and CORE VALUES grades, and, as importantly, in their self-confidence. Our students are beginning to beat the statistics. Ramona Cox Director, University-School Partnership, NC Central University Energize your community So, what do we do when we reach a peak? We get back to work. There are peaks in the distance that we together Discover your best self need to climb. There are still miles to go before we truly realize our bold dream. So now we turn our attention not Mariah Eckhardt Director of Marketing to the dream of building an organization, but to the dreams of our students that are still yet to be realized. It is and Communication, Burt’s Bees Respect yourself and others time to focus on Maritzelena’s dream to become a criminologist, on Marcus’s dream to become an architect, on Niadeque’s dream to become an OBGYN, on Daniel’s dream to become a screenwriter. It is now time to focus on Lee Hark Upper School Director, Achieve greatness the still-unrealized dream of our 285 brilliant students. Dream fearlessly In less than two years we will celebrate together as our oldest group of students graduate from high school and Eric Mlyn Executive Director, Share your brilliance enroll in college. In order to reach this next peak, we have hired a College Advisor to ensure our students apply Duke Engage to and are accepted into the right college with the skills and resources needed to succeed. We will enhance our health and wellness programming because we know that our students must not only be academically healthy, Karen Myles Co-Chair, Guardians 4 but physically and emotionally healthy. We will revamp our evaluation model so we know where each student is Student U, Parent Representative on her journey and therefore what is needed for her to reach her own mountaintop.
