Kent Wolgamott • Visit www.journalstar.com for more Catch Billy live this month • 10/16 and 10/17 The Zoo Bar • 10/24 at Murphy’s Lounge It’s been years since Doug Sahm the show even more impressive left his earthly groove. So it is the Porkestra was assembled really gives me a charge to hear this week and had only played a Sir Doug’s songs done live these single warmup gig at the Zoo. They days. Billy Bacon and his Porkes- sounded like they’d been together tra provided that electricity a few for years, playing a soulful mixture minutes ago when they cranked of American music from country to up a medley of “Mendocino” and pop. The saxophones of Josh Hoyer “Dynamite Woman” early in their and Dave Boye gave the Porkestra Zoofest-ending set. The Porkes- a cool edge, echoing back through tra nailed the cosmic Tex-Mex the years to when the horn was Sir Douglas Quintet sound and the primary solo instrument in rock Bacon got the spirit of the songs and R&B combos. Bacon suffers better than some of the bands on from arthritis and and is essentially the Sahm tribute record earlier this year. That might not retired from performing. Invited to return to Lincoln, once be the highlight of Zoofest for anyone but me. But Doug his second home, Bacon said yes. “It’s the best medicine I was my friend and the coolest guy I ever knew. Bacon could have.” He is in fine voice, Fuzzy Blazek’s harmonies and company did the same thing with the West Side San connect perfectly with Billy and the band is locked in. Antonio R&B of Sahm’s Texas Tornados partner Freddy Given Bacon’s longtime association with the Zoo, he was Fender’s “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.” What makes the perfect choice to cap Zoofest and is this set good.
