GPO Box 1617, Adelaide. 500 I Well, this has been a busy three months: the MRA Radio Programme (named Phone 212 6227. 'Centrestand' also for obvious reasons) on Triple M-FM has finally materialised; our new service sign with contact number now graces pride-of-place at the Information Centre just below Eagle-On The Hill (it really stands ou t like the proverbials too); the annual share the warmth run was a success as usual; also, we have opened a new Deadline - 1st of month previous Register in the Riverland: we are now agents for Swann Insurance which means to publication we are in the position to offer 10% discount to all financial members which rep resents a considerable saving· all of this in the 'slow winter months', just imagine what we could have done if the weather had been warmer. In this edition we have a letter to the Editor from a very concerned member it might provide some food for thought if taken seriously. This edition will also be Peter Mount's last as President: after quite a number of years sterling service, Peter has decided he has had enough for a while - well done mate, your replace ment has some mighty big shoes to fill!!! This may even be our last magazine in an Editorial capacity - who knows. Anyway, ride safe, take it easy out there on the wet and greasy roads and don't forget to COVER PHOTO: tune into the Radio Show each Tuesday. Road registered outfit on the streets of Douglas. The many years I have spent with the MRA has been both rewarding and stim ANNUAL ulating, and although it has cost a lot, I would not have traded those years for anything. v 7. EFFECTS ON LABORATORY MAMMALS AND IN VITRO TEST SYSTEMS 7.1 Single exposure 7. I.I Lethality In a study to determine the acute toxicity of four zinc compounds (acetate, nitrate, chloride and sulfate) administered by the oral or intraperitoneal route to male Swiss mice and male Sprague Dawley rats (Table 20), the majority of deaths occurred during the first 48 h. The clinical and physical signs of toxicity included miosis, conjunctivitis, decreased food and water consump- tion, haemorrhage and haematosis in the tail. These effects were reported to diminish with time, indicating rapid elimination of zinc from the body. The acute toxicity of zinc varied with the zinc salt . used, and ranged from 237 to, 623 mg/kg in rats and from 86 to 605 mgkg in mice after oral administration; the acute toxicity following an intraperitoneal dose ranged from 28 to 73 mg/kg in rats and from 32 to 115 mg/kg in mice (Doming0 et al., 1988). LCso values following inhalation exposure to zinc chloride were 11 800 mg/min per m3 in mice (Schenker et al., 1981) and 2000 mg/m3 in rats (Karlsson et al., 1991). 7.1.2 Acute studies: summary of key findings Zinc chloride can produce significant lung damage in rats when instilled directly into the lung; zinc oxide, by contrast, does not produce lung damage even when administered at relatively high concentrations. This is possibly due to the respective solubilities of the two compounds: zinc chloride is readily soluble in water whereas zinc oxide is not. Zinc chloride induces intra-alveolar oedema which closely resembles the effects of inhaled zinc oxide/hexachloroethane smoke in experimental animals.

B Page 1 of 40 EDITORSPEAK… email: [email protected] Woohoo, motorsport time again, even if the look to our FAE Winter Series is a little different to normal as we observe the protocols that Level 2 imposes on us. It’s racing, but not as we know it Jim!! As a club it’s great to be able to kick start our core business and to engage again with our competitors and wonderful V-Force. Please bear with us though as we work through the new system, as the changes we have had to make to allow racing to go ahead do require a different mindset from you the competitor, from online entry only, to contactless scrutineering and documentation and of course social distancing within Manfeild: Circuit Chris Amon, plus no driver helpers and no public. BUT, we get to go racing!! The fallout within worldwide motorsport from the Covid-19 pandemic will take quite some time to overcome, with most series now looking to the 2021 season, and a big question mark remaining over the viability of many teams and indeed the long term sustainability of some events. We are, I guess, lucky that the impact in NZ seems to have been relatively restricted and much of the local scene will be able to pick up where they left off in March. It will probably be next year before things are back to a BC normal here, but from what I’ve heard most competitors are keen to support the events that are being offered. Let’s hope so and let’s hope Level 1 is not too far away.
