Ballerinas and Muscle Men: the Body in Motion Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2014 Realism to Surrealism: European art and culture 1848-1936 Ballerinas and Muscle Men: The Body in Motion Dr Jessica Priebe 12/13 March 2014 Lecture summary: This lecture examines the representation of the human body in motion in nineteenth-century European and American art. We begin around 1850 with Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet’s paintings of rural labourers. We then move to the urban metropolis of Paris in the 1860s and 70s, where we will look at the work of Edgar Degas, specifically his images of the Opéra Ballet. The second half of the nineteenth century was also an exciting time in the development of photography as both an art and a science. We will consider the contributions of rapid motion photographers Eadweard Muybridge and Étienne-Jules Marey. Finally we will look at the influence of Muybridge and Marey’s work on the late nineteenth-century American Realist artist Thomas Eakins, who was responsible for bringing photography into mainstream American art.     16 FOOTNOTES Volume 2 (2009) Everything for Young Men to Enjoy: Examining American Nationalism and Homoeroticism in Thomas Eakins’ The Swimming Hole Daniella Sanader Abstract Focusing on Thomas Eakins’ The Swimming Hole, this research paper examines the painting as a landscape fraught with conflicting concerns. I explore The Swimming Hole from within the constructed ideals of nineteenth- century American masculinity and discuss how across its surface, notions of homoeroticism, athletic morality and nationalism engage with one another yet remain unresolved and discontinuous. This instability is explained through a contextual history of the nineteenth-century popularity of sports and recreation, the advent of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), and the association between organized play and the growth of a moral American citizen. Eakins’ use of the male nude will also be examined, while defining the concept of the homoerotic as it relates to the painting. By tying together these varied themes, this research paper reaches a conclusion of how The Swimming Hole fits into art historical discourse, queer studies and the history of American nationalism. For such a simple subject, The Swimming Hole is a remarkably unstable image, and Eakins’ ambiguous artistic strategies have puzzled critics and art historians ever since the painting’s completion in 1885.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Although his personal sexual preference is an ongoing matter of discussion, painter and teacher Thomas Eakins is solidly aligned in the history of art with a homophile sensibility. Throughout his career Eakins sought to evoke a realistic classicism in his depictions and thus produced works that celebrated ideals of form, particularly the male figure. Born on July 25, 1844 and educated in Philadelphia, Eakins attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1866 until 1870. It was there that the artist broadened his worldview and was introduced to photographic académies, or academic nude studies. He, in turn, introduced the genre to Philadelphia when he began teaching in 1873 at his alma mater, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Primarily a painter, Eakins soon also became an active maker of photographic nude studies to use as drawing aids in the classroom, a radically open policy that engendered loyalty from his students but harsh criticism from his academy colleagues. In 1884 Eakins married Susan Macdowell (1851-1938), a musican and painter who would become his frequent model and photographer. Nearly forty percent of Eakins's photographic production was devoted to nude studies and the images are classified into three groups: the "Naked series," consisting of sequences of anatomical poses; the art historical académies; and motion studies after the work of Eadweard Muybridge.     Exhibition Inquisition Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins September 29, 2010 Los Angeles County Museum of Art This is what the fuss is all about. To my readers: No more posts on LA exhibitions for a while (other than this one and the one to follow); I am now curled up next to a space heater in Chicago, while the rest of you complain about the amazingly hot weather in LA, boohoo. Admittedly I coerced my best friend to come with me to see these shows (Opie next time) by selling them to him as the “gay shows at LACMA.” They’re not really “gay” shows, but both have material that might be characterized as homoerotic, and maybe that’s why LACMA curators felt they needed to include the following at the entrance of the Manly Pursuits: Warning Adult Material. (No joke.) This begs to question—where!? I don’t see any adult material, unless you mean those paintings and photographs that have naked nude male figures in them. Is this warning necessary? Is it there because they’re naked guys? I don’t see labels warning about the naked women elsewhere in the museum. Where’s the warning sign in the renaissance galleries for that painting of that slut Danae and the golden shower? Try explaining what a golden shower is to your kids. Moving on from that unnecessary warning, the always clever exhibition designers at LACMA have come up with inventive signage. In the entryway a large title banner is hung from a complex rigging of ropes and pulleys.

The works engage with many of the radical shifts in social and cultural norms that took place during the latter half of the nineteenth-century as industrialization and urbanization increasingly affected daily life in Europe and America. The paintings are in dialogue with developments in the fine arts, including the growing influence of Impressionism and avant-garde artists, and deal extensively with the male figure, reacting to and engaging with changing norms of masculinity. To fully examine the works, I focus on five areas of comparison. First, in considering the possible implications of changing masculine ideals in relation to the physical body during the period, I consider Caillebotte’s controversial nude male bathers. I then contrast Caillebotte’s oarsmen with both the professional rowers portrayed by his American contemporary Thomas Eakins, and the more leisurely boating scenes of his fellow Impressionists. Finally, I examine the history of the dandy/flâneur figure, arguing that Caillebotte’s rowers illustrate the artist’s attempt to reinvent and modernize the concept.

Chapel Hill 2011 Approved by: Ross Barrett Carol Magee Daniel Sherman ©2011 Laura Fravel ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT LAURA FRAVEL: Reconsidering “Swimming:” Thomas Eakins and the Changing Landscapes of Modernity in Late Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia (Under the direction of Ross Barrett) Thomas Eakins’ Swimming pictures a transitory moment caught between two historically-specific community forms. While the earlier rural moment had been defined by accessibility and egalitarian leisure, the later suburban moment was defined by exclusive recreation and class homogeneity. Set near Bryn Mawr, an affluent suburb of Philadelphia promoted by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the painting encapsulates the tension between an imagined pastoral past and a modern state of metropolitan interconnectedness. This thesis will use a variety of period sources—including urban guidebooks, advertisements, and literature—to examine the ways in which Swimming engages the complicated and conflicted cultural vision of the outer city. While earlier scholarship has centered on the personal, professional and cultural identities of the figures within the painting, this thesis instead uses the activity of the figures within the space of the painting to inform larger cultural interpretations of the suburban landscape in which the work is set. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am grateful for the guidance and support of my thesis committee in the completion of this project.
