Proper bench design in quarry and observing safety measures for transportation etc., good maintenance of vehicles, roads, and fire prevention measures shall go in preventing disaster/accidents. Quarrying shall be carried out as per MMR 1961 & Rules and regulation applicable. The project in-charge is having a mobile communication for quick intimation of information if need arises. The Applicant is committed to identify the possible causes for potential disaster and draw a code of emergency measures and procedures to deal with such disasters, which is otherwise also advised by DGMS through their circulars. The quarry is located at 1.5 km from Regallu village having good transport and communication system. The quarry is having good communication like telephone & mobile facility. In case of any minor/major accidents within the quarry, the same will be communicated by the supervisor the project in charge and the concerned departments for necessary action. First aid will be providing at the quarry and if necessary the injured shall be shifted to nearby hospital at Madanapalli,Tirupati. Climatic risks: The area is climatically stable and does not impose any threat to the operations and subsequently the environment. The nature of the operations are such, there will not be any ‘Non Recoverable’ damaging situation except the loss of production. Quantifying the risk due to this factor cannot be done as on now. DATA BASE OF CHITTOOR DISTRICT. The district is categorized under Southern Agro Climatic Zone of Andhra Pradesh based on soil type, rainfall and altitude. There are 66 mandals, 1540 revenue villages and 1394 Panchayats in the district. In dry farming tracts of the zone groundnut is the main crop where as under tanks, wells and bore wells double cropping is practiced with Rice. Biodiversity-2012 International Conference on Biodiversity & Sustainable Energy Development September 14-15, 2012 Hyderabad International Convention Center, India Punganur cattle – Wonder Breed of Andhra Pradesh Y Ravindra Reddy SVU, India Abstract Punganur Cattle is one of the world’s smallest Bos indicus cattle originated in Punganur town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. This breed is known for its short stature, high milk production efficiency and efficient reproductive characters. The Jamindars of Punganur were erstwhile Diwans in the Princely state of Mysore. They took fancy on this small breed of cattle and improved this breed and got the name as Punganur breed of cattle. These animals were found in the taluks of Palamaner, Madanapalli, Vayalpad, Piler and Chandragiri. However the breed is on the verge of extinction due to extensive indiscriminate crossbreeding over a period of time in breeding tract. Attempts are made to rescue the breed at Livestock Research Station, Palamaner, under Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University. Under the ICAR adhoc scheme on the “Preservation and improvement of Punganur breed of cattle”, a demographic survey was conducted in the year 1993 in the breeding tract in Chittoor district covering about 150 villages. The major effort was to multiply the stock and study the morphological characters, production and reproduction parameters. The most important physical character is the height of the animal which is approximately one metre. The animals have a long tail almost touching the ground, which is the most unique feature of this particular breed. Reddy et al (2004) reported a lactation yield of 633.4+21.7 litres over a lactation period of 272.0+8.9 days with an average milk yield of 2.29+0.06 lts.

STUDY ON PHENOTYPIC CHARACTERIZATION AND PRODUCTION OF GERMPLASM OF PUNGANUR CATTLE Background : Punganur is world’s shortest humped cattle ( Bos.indicus ), originated in the surrounding areas of Punganur, Chittoor Dist, A.P. The productive and reproductive efficiencies are believed to be on par with the other dual purpose Indian breeds (Veerabramhaiah et al, 2001). At present, there are only 143 good Punganur cattle are available at Livestock Research Station, Palamaner, Chittoor Dist in the entire state / country. As per the FAO norms (Bodo, 1989) this small number indicates that the breed is in an alarming state of extinction. Therefore urgent efforts are needed for conservation of this precious indigenous germ plasm. In an effort towards in-situ conservation, all the available Punganur cattle are being maintained at Livestock Research Station, Palamaner. Ex-situ cryopreservation of germ plasm plays an important role in support of in-situ conservation of the breed (Hensen, 1992). Ex-situ conservation involves storage of genetic resources by production fo elite germplasm such as semen, embryos etc. Cryopreservation is expected to preserve genetics of the breed for many centuries. In view of the importance and threatened extinction, it is proposed to undertake ex- situ conservation of Punganur germ plasm with the following objectives. Objectives 1. To conduct detailed survey on Punganur cattle population status in A.P 2. To establish an elite herd of breedable animals 3. To undertake phenotypic characterization of Punganur cattle breed 4. Production of frozen semen and embryos from true Punganur cattle 5. To supply the elite germplasm to the needy farmers for propagation in the field.
