Der erste Teil (Einleitung) beinhaltet den thematischen Überbau sowie Hintergrundinformationen. Im zweiten Teil (Ergebnisse) werden die sowohl von mir als auch in Kollaboration angefertigten (ISI) Publikationen sowie der Review-Artikel zusammenfassend vorgestellt. Im anschließenden Diskussionsteil werden die eigenen Ergebnisse mit anderen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten in Kontext gesetzt und in das thematische Umfeld eingebracht. Die Publikationen sind in voller Länge im Anhang aufgeführt. Die zugrundeliegenden Publikationen sind entsprechend ihres Erscheinungsdatums aufgeführt. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi.

This bibliography lists, up to the end of 1970, about 800 references relating to the batflies or Streblidae and Nycteribiidae. Annotations are given regarding the contents, dates of publication and other information of the references listed. A subject index is appended. The following bibliography is the result of an attempt to catalogue and partly digest all the literature (published up to the end of 1970) relating to the Systematics and other aspects of the 2 small dipterous families of batflies, i.e., Streblidae and Nycter­ ibiidae. The bibliography includes a list of about 800 references, with annotations, and a subject index. Soon after the start of the compilation of literature in 1960, it was found that many odd but often important records were scattered in books and other publica­ tions on travels, expeditions, speleology, mammalogy, parasitology, etc. A number of such publications are not available even in the largest entomological libraries and might well have been inadvertently overlooked. While some 50 additional references are provisionally omitted because of the lack of sufficient information, new con­ tributions on the subject are almost continuously coming out from various sources. This bibliography does not, therefore, pretend to be complete and exhaustive. The time and effort devoted toward the compilation would be worthwhile should this bibliography be of interest to its readers and the annotations and subject index be of benefit. The manuscript has been revised several times and it is hoped that not too many errors, omissions and other discrepancies have developed during the course of preparation.

Larvae grow to 100mm, living ~6 years in solitary tunnels in host trees. Larvae cover their tunnel entrance with silk and frass webbing, behind which they feed on host tree phloem. Webbing looks much like the tree background, potentially concealing larvae from predatory parrots who consume larvae by tearing wood from trees. Yet, the ecological and evolutionary relationships between the host tree, the parasitic larvae, and the avian predator remain unresolved. In this thesis, I use a system-based approach to investigate complex parasite-host interactions using A. virescens (hereafter “larvae”) as a model system. First, I investigate the mechanisms driving intraspecific parasite aggregation (Chapter 2). Overall, many hosts had few parasites and few hosts had many, with larvae consistently more abundant in larger hosts. I found no evidence for density- dependent competition as infrapopulation size had no effect on long-term larval growth. Host specificity, the number of species utilised from the larger pool available, reflects parasite niche breadth, risk of extinction and ability to colonise new locations.

The population structure was assessed by monitoring associations between ringed individuals, utilising recent advances in social network analysis. Populations of both M. daubentonii and M. nattereri were found to subdivide into tight-knit social groups roosting within small areas of a continuous woodland (average minimum roost home range of 0.23km2 and 0.17km2 respectively). If this population structure is a general attribute of these species it may make them more sensitive to small scale habitat change than previously thought and has implications for how diseases may spread through the population. M. daubentonii had a strong preference for roosts close to water, away from woodland edge and in areas with an easterly aspect.
