Latinitas envisions a future in which all Latinitas are strong and confident in their image. Founded in 2002, by Alicia Rascón and Laura Donnelly, then journalism students at UT-Austin, fed up with the misrepresentation of Latinas in media, Latinitas has served over 20,000 girls and teens through after school clubs, weekend workshops, camps and conferences at 112 Austin schools, libraries and community centers generating content for Latinitas Magazine, still the first and only magazine made for and by young Latinas. Latinitas puts girls of all races at the helm of media production, but not just magazine publishing; they learn the latest Web 2.0 platforms design websites, produce video, record audio, blog, do photography, develop video games and apps and, recently—code. HOW LATINITAS IS WORKING Latinitas first official program evaluation last year revealed some amazing, first of its kind of outcomes about Latina girls’ success and culture-based programming. The outcomes were inspiring, to say the least. Normally, Latina girls have a higher high school dropout rate than girls in other racial or ethnic groups, 30 percent compared with 12.9 percent for Blacks and 8.2 percent for Whites, and are the least likely to earn a college degree. Ninety-three percent of Latinitas program alumni reported graduating high school within four years. Owing to the relatively young age of the participants, (our first program class are juniors in college right now) 81 percent reported their occupation as a college student. The impact of Latinitas is immense. LATINITAS BOARD OF DIRECTORS Latinitas, Inc. JENNA RODRÍGUEZ, BOARD CHAIR Austin Headquarters JOSEFINA RAQUEL ACEVES-CLAV 4926 E. As a staff photographer for the newspaper he documented the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico, covered the 1985 Mexico earthquake and traveled extensively in Latin America for USA Today. He received multiple awards, amongst them several for his coverage of life in Cuba and inhalant abuse on the U.S.-Mexican border. In 1991 Salcido left the El Paso Times to pursue commercial and editorial photography. Eight years later he moved his family to Spain for a year to work on his fine art photography. Always in quest of new visual frontiers, whether they be out in the highlands of any earthly corner of the planet or the mere comforts of a studio, he enjoys people a lot, especially their tales of conquest and defeat. Salcido says that once, at the top of a meseta in northern Spain, he witnessed an 82-year- old shepherd convince two enraged men that their fight was not worthy of true gentlemen. “Ole” to that!
