S ir , Í have the honour to submit, on behalf of the Fishery Board for Scotland, the Statistical Tables relating to the sea fisheries of Scotland for the year 1938. A narrative report on the fisheries and on the chief administrative and scientific activities of the Board during the year will shortly follow. The Scottish fishing tleet in 1938 comprised 1,818 sailing vessels, *2,471 motor vessels, 402 steam drifters, 26 steam liners as distinct from drifters, and 320 steam trawlers, or a total of 5,067 vessels, valued with their gear at £2,544,568, as against 5,217 vessels and £2,776,662 in 1937. In addition 202 English steam drifters fished in Scottish waters during the summer herring fishing. The number of Scottish fishermen was 17,915 (of whom 4,067 were crofter fishermen and 872 men were partially em­ ployed in fishing) as against 19,364 (including 4,355 crofter fishermen and 896 partially employed) in the preceding year. Shore workers and persons engaged in transport brought the total number em ployed in the Scottish fisheries to 53,274, as against 54,327 in 1937. The total quantity of fish landed in Scotland by British fishing vessels during the year was 5,380,562 cwts., valued at £3,826,671 besides shell­ fish valued at £79,853, as against 4,701,657 cwts., £3,422,178 and £92,734 respectively in 1937. In addition 117,688 cwts., valued at £118,283, were landed by foreign fishing vessels, mostly German trawlers and Swedish seiners, as against 152,136 cwts. and £113,907 in the preceding year, making a grand total of 5,498,250 cwts., valued with shell-fish at £4,024,807, as compared with 4,853,793 cwts. and £3,628,837 in 1937. Herrings figured most prominently in the aggregate landings, contributing 2,801,083 cwts., valued at £1,062,999, against 2,140,093 cwts. and £962,318 in the previous year. The total quantity of herrings cured, kippered, Ac. amounted to 680,868 barrels (of which 496,444 were pickled gutted), valued after cure at £1,638,119, against a total of 536,184 barrels valued at £1,366,465 in 1937. Of other kinds of fish the quantity cured, chiefly by smoking or drying, amounted after cure to 420,295 cwts., valued at £1,11 1,392, as against 397,961 cwts. and £990,221 in 1937. The exports of fish from Scotland included 490,9634 barrels of herrings gutted and pickled, 22 ungutted, and 104,5674 crans sprinkled with salt or iced, as against 372,4324 barrels and 47,204 crans respectively in 1937, and 83,656 cwts. of dried, smoked, or pickled fish of various kinds, and 16,9914 cwts. of fish preserved in other ways, as against 79,121 cwts. and 10,045 cwts. respectively in 1937.
