Subject Property Description Construction of the Aull block was completed in two phases undertaken in 1908 and 1925 and is a prime example of the mixed use architecture of its era. Originally purposed as commercial space on the ground floor and residential space on the second, the two storey section of the Aull Block (also known as the Shepard Block) was completed during the pre-World War I boom in 1908. The property was purchased by Dr. E. Aull in 1911 and converted into one of the earliest medical consultancy centres in Calgary. In 1925, a wooden structure existing at the time was replaced with the brick and mortar building present today on the corner of 12 Avenue and 1 Street SW. Situated in the Victoria Park neighbourhood in Calgary’s Beltline, the subject property has the advantage of being located in a neighbourhood focused heavily on re-development and densification while still remaining true to its historic character. In an effort to encourage development, a group of entrepreneurs came together in 1997 to form the Victoria Park Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ), which was the city’s second largest BRZ.
