LONDONGRAD IN THE UK QUALITY PRESS: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS How do UK newspapers employ the term Londongrad and how has this changed over time and between different newspapers? by Ben Dukes s1424181 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Russian and Eurasian Studies at Leiden University (Universiteit Leiden) June 2015 1 Abstract This thesis examines the use of the word Londongrad in four British national newspapers and draws extensively upon the approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) outlined by Richardson [2007]. The study compares the use of Londongrad in a sample of articles from two time periods: 2005-8 and 2011-14, defining how it is used and how its use has changed over time, with reference to wider social, political and cultural contexts. Results indicate that Londongrad is particularly prevalent in the right-wing press, and that its use has become more prominent over time. The thesis puts forward the argument that Londongrad lacks concrete definition but carries implicit meaning that allows for the reinforcement of negative stereotypes with regard to Russian activity in the UK. Article Chernobyl’s Lesser Known Design Flaw: The Chernobyl Liquidator Medal—An Educational Essay Michael McIntire * and John Luczaj Department of Natural & Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Green Bay, WI 54311, USA * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-920-465-5131 Received: 26 June 2019; Accepted: 7 August 2019; Published: 9 August 2019 Abstract: The honorary Chernobyl Liquidator Medal depicts pathways of alpha, gamma, and beta rays over a drop of blood, signifying the human health impacts of the Chernobyl accident. A relativistic analysis of the trajectories depicted on the Chernobyl Liquidator Medal is conducted assuming static uniform magnetic and electric fields. The parametric trajectories are determined using the energies of alpha (α) and beta (β) particles relevant to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and compared with the trajectories depicted on the liquidator medal. For minimum alpha particle velocity of 0.0512c, the beta particle trajectory depicted on the medal is highly unlikely to have come from a naturally occurring nuclear decay process. The parametric equations are used to determine the necessary beta energies to reproduce the depicted trajectories. This article documents the unfortunate misrepresentation of a famous scientific experiment on an honorary medal and illustrates the importance of better communication between artists and scientists. Culture Wars in the Media Mr Dean, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for your kind introduction and your invitation to join such an august line of guest speakers. What a pleasure it is to be here this evening, though it is a pleasure tinged with trepidation. I worry that those who work in the media have quite enough opportunity to be heard without being granted this storied platform further to inflict their views on others. I’m conscious – as we meet here this evening in a forum of ethical discussion - that journalists tend to rush for the story rather than pause too long to consider its ramifications. And, amid this accelerated news cycle, I am slightly worried that we may be losing another prime minister as we sit here. But as I stared at the big quote in a Guardian article, I was reminded that there is a conversation that needs to be addressed. “I’ve given up watching the news,” said a 60-something man in the Guardian piece. “It’s all lies.” Oh, come on. Given up? Really? Stopped when we have moved from all that theoretical stuff to pure theatrical drama? Stopped in the middle of the fallout from the Supreme Court decision. Stopped with a beleaguered prime minister on both the wrong side of the Atlantic and the wrong side of the law? We’ve always had room for different interpretations of the news. A divergence of political view is manifest in the reaction to almost every news story. Observers have always interpreted things in accordance with their underlying philosophy. -

Backgrounder: Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident Background On April 26, 1986, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment. Emergency crews responding to the accident used helicopters to pour sand and boron on the reactor debris. The sand was to stop the fire and additional releases of radioactive material; the boron was to prevent additional nuclear reactions. A few weeks after the accident, the crews completely covered the damaged unit in a temporary concrete structure, called the “sarcophagus,” to limit further release of radioactive material. The Soviet government also cut down and buried about a square mile of pine forest near the plant to reduce radioactive contamination at and near the site. Chernobyl’s three other reactors were subsequently restarted but all eventually shut down for good, with the last reactor closing in 1999. The Soviet nuclear power authorities presented their initial accident report to an International Atomic Energy Agency meeting in Vienna, Austria, in August 1986. After the accident, officials closed off the area within 30 kilometers (18 miles) of the plant, except for persons with official business at the plant and those people evaluating and dealing with the consequences of the accident and operating the undamaged reactors. Social-economic Consequences of the Chornobyl Catastrophe Volodymyr Kholosha First Deputy Chief of State Department– Administration of Exclusion Zone and Zone of Absolute (Compulsory) Resettlement 1. Introduction The largest in its scale and consequences man-caused catastrophe that took place on April 26 1986 on the # 4 Reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic became national tragedy, condemned millions of people to sufferings, and showed how unprotected was the state in the face of global disaster in peace-time. The Chornobyl NPP disaster was responsible for serious economic losses within the former Soviet Union and beyond. The accident disrupted production as well as the normal activities of daily life in many areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russian Federation. In Ukraine, it led to a significant loss of electrical power production and a direct impact on the regional industrial economy. Further, it caused substantial damage to the agricultural economy and limited the use of the area's forests and waterways (use restrictions were imposed on 5,120 km2 of farmland and 4,920 km2 of forest). For the entire Ukraine population, the reduction in the Gross National Product and the loss of monies that could have been spent on improving health care and preventive medicine, and in other areas to promote general health and well- being was a significant blow. In 1986, approximately 116,000 persons were evacuated from areas with radiation level higher than 5 mRem per hour. This evacuation required the construction of additional housing for the evacuees. Approximately 15,000 apartments; several living quarters with a total capacity exceeding 1,000 persons; 23,000 houses; and approximately 800 social and cultural institutions were constructed during 1986 and 1987.
