Revisioning Buddhism ©Piya Tan, 2017 The Buddha’s wager1 The Buddha always holds the Dharma first, as evident from the Gārava Sutta (S 6.2),2 which records one of the first key events in the Buddha’s life after the great awakening. In the Mahā,- parinibbāna Sutta (D 16),3 which records his last moments, too, the Buddha declares that the Dharma comes first, before the teacher. However, against the Buddha’s clear instructions, other Buddhist sectarians and later teachers put their Sutras and Teachings first. Such disregard from the Buddha arises from various reasons and conditions, but basically it was (and is) on account of desire for worldly gains and following, for putting down rivalry and dissent, and the influence of worldly conditions and other religions. The Buddha does not make such vital statements frivolously or as an option that we may dis- regard. He has very good reasons for giving us such initial and final instructions. To remind ourselves of the vitality of these instructions we will call them the “Buddha’s wager.” This wager or challenge can be simply put like this: The Buddha holds Dharma above himself. Buddha or no Buddha, Dharma is always there. The later sectarian Buddhist teachers place their Sutras and Teachings first. Without these gurus’ Sutras and Teachings, there are no later Buddhist sects. We don’t need the later Buddhist sects, and can and must go directly to the Dharma. Here, I think, is an almost infallible test for the authenticity of the historical Buddha’s teaching or the Buddha Dharma, the teaching of awakening. -

PRAYER Book one Meher Baba Think of me every day for five minutes only, at any time of the day. Of course the best time would be at five in the morning, when I remain almost everywhere. This little beginning of a mere five minutes will also be your first step on the spiritual Path. Once you get interested in and attuned to the thought of God, you will have a constant urge to think of him for a certain period every day. It is sincere thought I want. No amount of prayer and chanting would be of any value if done as a ritual. These five minutes of thought, meditation or concentration on God or the Master are a thousand times better than any prayer. God wants love, pure sincere love. He does not want to hear bombastic jaw-breaking words and shlokas from the shastras and passages from the Avesta. The prayer books of all the religions, the Avesta of the Parsis, the Koran of the Muslims, the Bible of the Christians, the Vedas of the Hindus, and all other religious books are long treatises, and have nothing to do with the Truth. Zarathustra taught that you must burn your heart in love of God, and the dasturs thereafter changed the meaning of it and altered it to mean burning externally with sandalwood. The religious dogmas and doctrines of the Kusti and other prayers in the Avesta all have been changed from time to time. Take one name sincerely, lovingly, devotedly for a few minutes, without the thought of anything else, and that is worth more than hours of mechanical prayers. -

Assuming, from an Eternalist perspective, that actions have effects also beyond the present life, Gotama underlines the necessity of betting on the validity of moral kammic retribution. Having thus demonstrated the central ethical error of Nihilism, he subtly introduces peculiar Buddhist moral concepts ( kusala/akusala ) to purify the Eternalist vision from the doctrine of a real existing self ( attāvāda ) and from the puñña /pāpa dichotomy. We can summarize this dialectical course as follows: Nihilism is pāpa /akusala because it denies kamman , Eternalism is puñña /not-akusala because it upholds kamman from a non-Buddhist perspective, Buddhism is kusala because it admits the law of kamman not centered on a theory of a real existing self (anattāvāda ). -

Its purpose is to undertake research designed to improve access to basic education in developing countries. It seeks to achieve this through generating new knowledge and encouraging its application through effective communication and dissemination to national and international development agencies, national governments, education and development professionals, non-government organisations and other interested stakeholders. Access to basic education lies at the heart of development. Lack of educational access, and securely acquired knowledge and skill, is both a part of the definition of poverty, and a means for its diminution. Sustained access to meaningful learning that has value is critical to long term improvements in productivity, the reduction of inter- generational cycles of poverty, demographic transition, preventive health care, the empowerment of women, and reductions in inequality. Pandit Ravi Shankar—Tansen of our Times Pandit Ravi Shankar died a few months ago, just short of his 93rd birthday on 7 April. So it is opportune that we remember a man whom I have rather unabashedly called the Tansen of our times. Pandit Ravi Shankar was easily the greatest musician of our times and his death marks not only the transience of time itself, but it also reminds us of the glory that was his life and the immortality of his legacy. In the passing of Robindro Shaunkar Chowdhury, as he was called by his parents, on 11 December in San Diego, California, we cherish the memory of an extraordinary genius whose life and talent spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. It crossed all continents, it connected several genres of human endeavour, it uplifted countless hearts, minds and souls. Very few Indians epitomized Indian culture in the global imagination as this charismatic Bengali Brahmin, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Born in 1920, Ravi Shankar not only straddled two centuries but also impacted many worlds—the East, the West, the North and the South, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern. -
