His earliest days in the distillery were spent shovelling malted barley; his night spent sleeping in the hayloft. He was the ultimate self-made man, propelling himself quickly through the ranks. Recognised as the brightest talent in the distillery, in 1873 he was made General Manager and ultimately became owner of the distillery. Single-handedly, he began to turn a good whiskey great. Sometime later, this accomplished, he proudly marked every bottle from the Tullamore Distillery under the name Tullamore Dew. Although the vision of Daniel E. Williams was focused keenly on the craft of whiskey making, his passion was such that his influence had much further reaching consequences. In order to make his whiskey his way, Williams brought electricity, motorised cars and the telephone to Tullamore town. The Williams family were the first to create an Irish blended whiskey. What was once a brilliant innovation has become the signature of many Irish whiskeys to this day. Even though Daniel E. Williams has long since passed, his legacy lives on. His sheer grit and determination has been a huge source of inspiration to the brand and has helped ensure that Tullamore D.E.W. continues to be enjoyed throughout the world. The Timeline of Tullamore D.E.W. 1785 Tullamore witnessed a devastating hot-air balloon accident, destroying half the town in the resulting fire. The resilience and innovation of its residents shone through as the town was rebuilt. 1829 The Tullamore Distillery was first built by Michael Molloy. 1862 A 14 year old Daniel E. Williams left his father’s family home to work in the distillery. 1873 Daniel E. Williams was made General Manager of the distillery. 1903 The Williams family became the majority shareholders in the distillery. 1900 – 1918 Tullamore D.E.W. became a highly fashionable drink in the stylish bars of the world's major cities . 1919 – 1933 The introduction of Prohibition in the US meant Tullamore D.E.W.’s biggest export market disappeared overnight. 1930s Ireland’s economic war with Britain in the 1930s resulted in the loss of Irish whiskey sales including Tullamore D.E.W. in the UK and across the British Empire – including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and the Far East. 1947 Daniel E. Williams’ grandson, Desmond, returned from the United States with the idea to pioneer a unique new product, Tullamore D.E.W. Blended Whiskey, which was the first triple distilled blended Irish whiskey – resulting in a distinctly smooth, premium yet complex Irish whiskey. The whiskey was popular but the company continued to find trading tough. 1954 The Tullamore Distillery closed as the effects of prohibition, two World Wars and Ireland’s economic war with Britain meant the distillery was no longer sustainable given the many export challenges at that time. In the subsequent decades production would move between the John’s Lane Distillery in Dublin and the Midleton Distillery in Cork. 2010 William Grant & Sons bought Tullamore D.E.W. 2012 William Grant & Sons officially opened the new Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre on the site of the old Tullamore D.E.W. Bonded Warehouse on Bury Quay. 2014 Tullamore D.E.W. opens its new distillery in Tullamore. This milestone sees whiskey production return to Tullamore 60 years after the original distillery closed its doors. The ‘Parting Glass’ In 2013 Tullamore D.E.W. launched the award-winning short film ‘A Parting Glass’. The film follows four people preparing to raise a glass to say goodbye to a friend – but not for the reason the viewer is led to believe. Beautifully shot in the rolling Irish countryside, the film was created by New York agency Opperman Weiss and directed by Laurence Dunmore of Ridley Scott’s RSA Films. To celebrate the opening of the Tullamore Distillery, a true ‘Parting Glass’ moment for the brand, Tullamore D.E.W. launched the #PartingGlass campaign, a global online search for the best toasts to mark the beginning of life’s new chapters. The campaign invited people to share their own parting glass moments online. The film can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/ThePartingGlass .
