Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey Fact Sheet Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey Fact Sheet Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey Tullamore D.E.W is known the world over for its smooth and gently complex flavour. Triple distillation gives Tullamore D.E.W. its accessible smoothness, while the unique triple blend of grain, pot still and malt whiskey brings out its gentle complexity. The sweet softness of grain whiskey, soft spice from the pot still whiskey and citrus from the malt whiskey combined with maturation in both Bourbon and Sherry casks is what distinguishes Tullamore D.E.W. from all other Irish whiskeys. The Tullamore D.E.W. award winning range includes: Tullamore D.E.W. Original The original blended Irish whiskey, known the world over for its smooth & gentle complexity. Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year Old Special Reserve Like Tullamore D.E.W. Original, Tullamore D.E.W. 12yo Special Reserve is a triple distilled blend of all three types of Irish whiskey. However, it has a high proportion of pot still and malt whiskeys, matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, for 12 to 15 years. A very fine aged whiskey with great complexity. Tullamore D.E.W. 10 Year Old Single Malt The only Irish Single Malt in existence that is matured to perfection in old bourbon, dry oloroso sherry, madeira and port casks. Aging in these specially selected casks enhances the flavour of the spirit. The result is a singularly rich and mellow expression of a legendary Irish whiskey. Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix This special limited edition whiskey celebrating the history and people of Tullamore is characterised by its high content pot still whiskey finished in old oloroso sherry casks. At an ABV of 55%, this is a medium bodied whiskey, with distinctive sherry notes and pleasantly spicy creamy pot still whiskey flavours. Tullamore D.E.W Irish Whiskey Celebratory Phoenix Single Batch A complex, triple-distilled, triple blend featuring all three types of Irish whiskey; malt, pot still and grain, carefully finished in Virgin Oak casks. Only 2,014 bottles have been produced to celebrate the opening of Tullamore Distillery. Tullamore D.E.W. Old Bonded Warehouse Available exclusively at the Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre, this medium bodied Irish whiskey has a mellow complexity, leaving a sweet taste and a harmonious balance of fruit and spice with hints of sherry nuttiness imparted by the oloroso sherry casks. Phoenix 2014 Silver Medal International Spirits Challenge Old Bonded Warehouse The Man behind the D.E.W. The story of Tullamore D.E.W. began with Daniel E. Williams. His earliest days in the distillery were spent shovelling malted barley; his night spent sleeping in the hayloft. He was the ultimate self-made man, propelling himself quickly through the ranks. Recognised as the brightest talent in the distillery, in 1873 he was made General Manager and ultimately became owner of the distillery. Single-handedly, he began to turn a good whiskey great. Sometime later, this accomplished, he proudly marked every bottle from the Tullamore Distillery under the name Tullamore Dew. Although the vision of Daniel E. Williams was focused keenly on the craft of whiskey making, his passion was such that his influence had much further reaching consequences. In order to make his whiskey his way, Williams brought electricity, motorised cars and the telephone to Tullamore town. The Williams family were the first to create an Irish blended whiskey. What was once a brilliant innovation has become the signature of many Irish whiskeys to this day. Even though Daniel E. Williams has long since passed, his legacy lives on. His sheer grit and determination has been a huge source of inspiration to the brand and has helped ensure that Tullamore D.E.W. continues to be enjoyed throughout the world. The Timeline of Tullamore D.E.W. 1785 Tullamore witnessed a devastating hot-air balloon accident, destroying half the town in the resulting fire. The resilience and innovation of its residents shone through as the town was rebuilt. 1829 The Tullamore Distillery was first built by Michael Molloy. 1862 A 14 year old Daniel E. Williams left his father’s family home to work in the distillery. 1873 Daniel E. Williams was made General Manager of the distillery. 1903 The Williams family became the majority shareholders in the distillery. 1900 – 1918 Tullamore D.E.W. became a highly fashionable drink in the stylish bars of the world's major cities . 1919 – 1933 The introduction of Prohibition in the US meant Tullamore D.E.W.’s biggest export market disappeared overnight. 1930s Ireland’s economic war with Britain in the 1930s resulted in the loss of Irish whiskey sales including Tullamore D.E.W. in the UK and across the British Empire – including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and the Far East. 1947 Daniel E. Williams’ grandson, Desmond, returned from the United States with the idea to pioneer a unique new product, Tullamore D.E.W. Blended Whiskey, which was the first triple distilled blended Irish whiskey – resulting in a distinctly smooth, premium yet complex Irish whiskey. The whiskey was popular but the company continued to find trading tough. 1954 The Tullamore Distillery closed as the effects of prohibition, two World Wars and Ireland’s economic war with Britain meant the distillery was no longer sustainable given the many export challenges at that time. In the subsequent decades production would move between the John’s Lane Distillery in Dublin and the Midleton Distillery in Cork. 2010 William Grant & Sons bought Tullamore D.E.W. 2012 William Grant & Sons officially opened the new Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre on the site of the old Tullamore D.E.W. Bonded Warehouse on Bury Quay. 2014 Tullamore D.E.W. opens its new distillery in Tullamore. This milestone sees whiskey production return to Tullamore 60 years after the original distillery closed its doors. The ‘Parting Glass’ In 2013 Tullamore D.E.W. launched the award-winning short film ‘A Parting Glass’. The film follows four people preparing to raise a glass to say goodbye to a friend – but not for the reason the viewer is led to believe. Beautifully shot in the rolling Irish countryside, the film was created by New York agency Opperman Weiss and directed by Laurence Dunmore of Ridley Scott’s RSA Films. To celebrate the opening of the Tullamore Distillery, a true ‘Parting Glass’ moment for the brand, Tullamore D.E.W. launched the #PartingGlass campaign, a global online search for the best toasts to mark the beginning of life’s new chapters. The campaign invited people to share their own parting glass moments online. The film can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/ThePartingGlass .

THE RANKING OF THE WORLD’S MILLION-CASE SPIRITS BRANDS 2019 001 Cover DI MILLIONAIRES 2019 FINAL.indd 1 04/06/2019 14:58 The millionaires’ JUNE 2019 DRINKSINT.COM 3 COMMENT The volume game Regardless of Trump’s tariff wars, Brexit and other socio-economic issues, the spirits industry is thriving. And once again The Millionaires’ Club bears witness to the movements of million-case spirits brands all over the globe. Ninety-two of the 153 millionaire brands listed in the 2019 supplement demonstrate an increase in volumes, so the industry shows no signs of slowing down. The biggest volume players are always from Asia due to the huge populations and brand loyalty in major markets, with soju’s Jinro now boasting 87m cases. But it’s also been fascinating to see Diageo’s Indian brandy Men’s Club virtually double in growth despite it showing decline over the previous four years. Looking at Europe, Martell has had a great year. A huge 18% growth shows how cognac is returning to its former glory in terms of international sales and the same can almost be said for vodka in the US as it appears the market is no longer in free-fall, with many of the big players returning to growth. It’s possible that volume sales will dwindle in importance as future generations of consumers continue to drink less but better – quality over quantity. The assets may shrink and the players may change, but this game of volumes isn’t going to end any time soon. • Dr. William Moran
Dr. William Moran Dr. William Moran is remembered by the people of Tullamore with affection and respect. To many parishioners he was seen as a character and there are few of the older parishioners who have not some humorous story to relate concerning him. Dr. Moran came to Tullamore from Trim in October 1949 where he had been parish priest. He was a native of Castletowngeoghegan near Tullamore and was educated at St. Finian’s (Navan) and Maynooth College where he was ordained in 1910. He received a doctorate in divinity in 1913 and after four years as a curate in Mullingar and Collins town he was appointed professor of dogmatic theology in Maynooth in 1917. In 1932 he became prefect of the Dunboyne establishment and librarian in 1932. From there he moved to Trim and in 1949 to Tullamore. Although a competent parish administrator who gave his full support to the local schools building programme of the 1950s, Dr. Moran was happiest among his books and produced a number of books and pamphlets on religious topics including his well known catechism. He also published a number of historical articles including this booklet on the history of Tullamore in 1962. But if Dr. Moran was interested in the past he was also a forward thinking practical man. He seemed to take a special delight in running the annual Corpus Christi procession from the organ gallery of the church with the ‘Tannoy’ system he purchased in 1951. With this system Dr. Moran could broadcast a Maynooth choir for the procession together with a taped recording of his own sermon while he walked around the church and listened, presumably, admiringly, to the whole event.
