Failed Active Listening in The Real World: A Study of Dominance in Casual Conversation Tamara Jones Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) School of Education, University of Sheffield September, 2010 ii Abstract Native-English speakers generally appreciate a certain amount of supportive feedback from their listeners. However, occasionally, a positive listener response actually causes the speaker to become threatened and revert to floor-saving measures. Speakers whose first language is not English may be at a disadvantage when involved in interactions with native-English speakers because they may not be equipped with the tools to exercise conversational power, if they wish to do so. Consequently, with the goal of creating educational materials that can be easily used in English Language Teaching (ELT), this thesis examines instances of listener support which are not appreciated by the speaker. For my corpus, I pulled 69 conversations from a popular American reality TV show, The Real World. These conversations were selected because of the presence of floor-saving strategies in the wake of seemingly benign listener commentary.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} New Word A Day 365 New Words A Day - One word for each day! by E.S. Carruthers The 3 Best Sites to Learn a New Word Every Day. Expanding and improving your vocabulary one word at a time. Share Flipboard Email. English Grammar An Introduction to Punctuation. Ph.D., Rhetoric and English, University of Georgia M.A., Modern English and American Literature, University of Leicester B.A., English, State University of New York. In terms of vocabulary development, we were all little geniuses in childhood, learning hundreds of new words every year. By the time we entered first grade, most of us had active vocabularies of several thousand words. Unfortunately, we weren't geniuses for very long. By age 11 or 12, equipped with a sizable survival vocabulary, most of us lost some of our early enthusiasm for language, and the rate at which we picked up new words began to decline significantly. As adults, if we don't make deliberate efforts to increase our vocabularies, we're lucky to pick up even 50 or 60 new words a year. The English language has so much to offer (between 500,000 and 1 million words, by most accounts) that it would be a shame to let our vocabulary-building talents go to waste. So here's one way that we can regain some of our youthful brilliance: learn a new word each day. Whether you're a student preparing for the SAT, ACT, or GRE, or simply an unabashed logophile (or lover of words), starting each day with a fresh word can be intellectually nourishing—and more enjoyable than a bowl of All-Bran.

(August 2011) Janie Filoteo, B.A., Our Lady of the Lake University; M.A., Our Lady of the Lake University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Sarah N. Gatson The present work examines the construction of race on reality television through the use of an exemplar in this genre, MTV‘s The Real World. By the sheer fact of its popularity and ubiquity, as The Real World is nearly two decades old and is the longest- running example of the genre, reality television programming warrants deeper academic investigation.
