The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI, Delhi), The Other Media (Delhi) and the Centre for Social Justice (Ahmedabad), helped fund travel to and within Chhattisgarh. CHRI and Other Media helped with logistics and backup support. Asian Center for Human Rights (ACHR) were generous in sharing their newspaper documentation on Chhattisgarh with us. We are grateful to friends in Delhi for help of various kinds, including translation, and to Jitendra Kumar for translation of the Hindi press release. We are also extremely grateful to a number of individuals and organizations in Dantewara and Bastar who helped us with logistics, and who shared with us their views, insights and hopes for a safer future. We will never forget the courage of our young interpreters who took the risk of accompanying us and suffered severe consequences as a result. We do not wish to name any of these people here for fear it would further endanger lives already vulnerable in a situation of armed conflict. We salute each one of them, living through a terrible ordeal, yet managing to find the courage to keep working at changing the situation in what ever way they can. • Conspicuous Maria Gonds in Transforming the Surface Systems of the Abhujmarh- Highlands – Bastar, India
Conspicuous Maria Gonds in Transforming the Surface Systems of the Abhujmarh- Highlands – Bastar, India Dr. N.L. Dongre "Every isolated passion is, in isolation, insane; sanity may be defined as synthesis of insanities. Every dominant passion generates a dominant fear, the fear of its non-fulfillment. Every dominant fear generates a nightmare, sometimes in form of explicit and conscious fanaticism, sometimes in paralyzing timidity, sometimes in an unconscious or subconscious terror which finds expression only in dreams. The man who wishes to preserve sanity in a dangerous world should summon in his own mind a parliament of fears, in which each in turn is voted absurd by all the others." ─Bertrand Russell The Kotri River flows in-between Abujhmarh hills of Bastar, India. The highland zone contains what is often called rough country, consisting to a large extent of rugged hills, mountains, and eroded areas frequently broken by valleys and plains. The highest elevations in the Abujhmarh are in the highland zone; the highest point is at 843 m, located in the highlands. The highland zone is cooler than the lowland zone, and receives more rainfall and less sunlight. In many places farming is impossible. Even where it is feasible, the soil is often thin and stony, with a hard rock formation below. Rainwater often cannot escape readily, so many areas tend to be waterlogged. Abstract: Studies of influences of the Maria Gonds of Bastar on the environment may treat the Marias agency as an imposed, exogenous source of change or disturbance or as an intrinsic part of Abhujmarh surface systems.

Rs. 10/- 2 ✦ The War In Dantewara By Way Of An Introduction he attention of the whole country has been on Chattisgarh for some time now. Some have Tviewed it with trepidation and some with enthusiasm. The trepidation and the enthusi asm are responses to the same phenomenon: the counter-insurgency strategy of arming the opponents of the Maoists and letting them lose on society. It is called Salwa Judum in Chattisgarh, and it could more prosaically be called Village Self-Defence Committees elsewhere. The ‘success’ in Chattisgarh is being seen as the birth - at last - of an effective societal answer to Maoism, even as the lawless police death squads of Andhra Pradesh called Greyhounds are being seen as an effec- tive military answer to Maoism. There are reasons to believe that the Union Government at the highest level is endorsing this view. We are not concerned with whether the State will eventually find an ‘answer’ to Maoism. So long as the people are the arbiters, and they are able to decide freely and fearlessly, the argument is at liberty to work itself out.

  • Appeal Take up Strong Agitations Against the Massacre Going on In
Appeal The Central Committee of our Party gave a call to take up protest week from 5th to 11th October, 2016. On this occasion our propaganda bureau is releasing this booklet. We have mentioned the intensifying violent actions of the armed forces of the central and the state governments in for the past one year. Propaganda bureau Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee Communist Party of India (Maoist) Take up strong agitations against the massacre going on in Dandakaranyam in the name of Operation Greenhunt and Mission-2016! Raise voice against the attempt to make aerial attacks on Bastar! Support the revolutionary people’s governments that are bringing forward the genuine people’s development model! Dandakaranya is blazing in the flames of cruel repression unleashed by the central and the state governments. The fascist greenhunt campaign, Mission-2016 are making bloodshed with their murderous attacks in the green forest, crop lands, rivers, hills, hillocks and the narrow pathways. The livelihood of the adivasi and non adivasi indigenous people of the people of Dandakaranya are deprived of peace in the day and sleep in the night. No day passes without the sounds of the iron boots of the government armed forces. Instead of the rela songs and the rythmic drums, there are the sounds of gun fire and land mines. Encounters, mainly fake encounters are now the common place not only in villages but streets, houses and doorways. The forest dwellers are banned to lay foot in the forest. Cattle bar, bow and arrow, axe and other such tradional tribal weapons and even a normal stick is being considered to be a death weapon by the state.

Counter operations by governments 1. Grey Hound police 2. Operation Green Hunt 3. Salwa Judum 4. Peace Talks with Maoist 5. Surrender Policy Conclusion www.pragnyaias.com 7288081111 Improvement in standard of living is something that everyone craves for and deserves it too. It involves, apart from decent food clothing and shelter, quality education and health and also dignified living. It is the absence of these things that incited masses against colonial government. Independence of India brought with it huge popular expectations for upliftment from poverty, from new democratic government. Our leaders were wisely dedicated to democratic principles for redistribution of resources. Unfortunately, democratic processes are too slow to observe any tangible results soon. Under this it is to be ensured that, in order to deliver justice to downtrodden people, injustice is not done even with privileged ones. This requires every action to be taken transparently and every effected person be given reasonable opportunity of being heard and also right to recourse to courts. Land reforms were major plank through which the Congress brought rural masses under its fold. But after independence, this subject went under state’s domain. Politics of every state differed and it was driving force for extent and direction of land reforms. States which failed to deliver much www.pragnyaias.com 7288081111 at this front were to bear the brunt of left-wing movement in coming times.

Mao in the Land of Nehru: State and Insurgent Space in India's Hinterlands by Michael Spacek A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2017 Michael Spacek Abstract This dissertation examines the contemporary Maoist insurgency in the hills and forests of eastern and central India, situating it within longer-term processes of state interaction and expansion in the indigenous-populated region going back to the colonial period. It develops a framework of analysis from Henri Lefebvre’s theories of space, the state and capitalism. The empirical examination of the insurgent zones is then grounded in a conceptualization of the insurgent zones which draws on James C. Scott and Willem van Schendel’s work on Zomia. Specifically, the insurgency in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region and the Chotanagpur Plateau in Jharkhand are seen as a contemporary manifestation of hostility to state expansion in the region dating back to the defeat of the Moghul state by the British East India Company. By drawing attention to the changing interactions between local pre-state spatial practices and an expansionist state geography, we are able to more effectively identify the sources of differing conflict dynamics in two demographically and geographically similar places. State expansion in Chotanagpur has produced a fragmented space in which industrial spaces of hyper-modernity exist alongside special ‘protected’ spaces constituted around a simulacrum of pre-capitalist social and economic relations. In southern Chhattisgarh the state is notable in its absence.
