The following information was compiled from a number of written sources based on language research and ethno-historic observations. It should be noted that the information provided here does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Gunditj Mirring people regarding their tribal affiliations and boundaries. Aboriginal occupation of the Portland region has been dated to at least 11,000 years ago, with use of the coastal regions demonstrated by the presence of recorded shell middens and artefact scatters (Freslov 1992; Kellaway and Rhodes 2002). -

PREFACE The material for " The Rulers of Strathspey" was originally collected by the Author for the article on Ogilvie-Grant, Earl of Seafield, in The Scots Peerage, edited by Sir James Balfour Paul, Lord Lyon King of Arms. A great deal of the information collected had to be omitted OAving to lack of space. It was thought desirable to publish it in book form, especially as the need of a Genealogical History of the Clan Grant had long been felt. It is true that a most valuable work, " The Chiefs of Grant," by Sir William Fraser, LL.D., was privately printed in 1883, on too large a scale, however, to be readily accessible. The impression, moreover, was limited to 150 copies. This book is therefore published at a moderate price, so that it may be within reach of all the members of the Clan Grant, and of all who are interested in the records of a race which has left its mark on Scottish history and the history of the Highlands. The Chiefs of the Clan, the Lairds of Grant, who succeeded to the Earldom of Seafield and to the extensive lands of the Ogilvies, Earls of Findlater and Seafield, form the main subject of this work. -

Encouraged by the support of William Sorell, the former Lieutenant- Governor, and Edward Curr, who had recently returned from the colony, they formed the Van Diemen’s Land Company and applied to Lord Bathurst for a grant of 500,000 acres. Bathurst agreed to a grant of 250,000 acres. The Van Diemen’s Land Company received a royal charter in 1825 giving it the right to cultivate land, build roads and bridges, lend money to colonists, execute public works, and build and buy houses, wharves and other buildings. Curr was appointed the chief agent of the Company in Van Diemen’s Land. -

FRANCIS BARRALLIER, EXPLORER, SURVEYOR, ENGINEER, ARTILLERY OFFICER, AIDE-DE-CAMP, ARCHITECT AND SHIP DESIGNER: THREE YEARS IN NEW SOUTH WALES (1800-1803) VALERIE LHUEDE' Ensign Barrallier [... discharged] the duties of Military Engineer and Artillery Officer, superintending the Military Defences, Batteries and Cannon of this Settlement, in addition to which he has most arduously and voluntarily executed the duties of Civil Engineer and Surveyor to the advancement of the Geography and the Natural History of the Territory.2 I have informed you [Sir Joseph Banks] in my several letters of the great use Ensign Barrallier, of the NSW Corps, was of to me and the public, first in going to the southward and surveying the coast from Wilson's Promontory to Western Port; next in surveying Hun ter's River, where he went twice; and since then in making journey to the mountains, which was introductory to his undertaking the journey he afterwards performed. [...] As Col. Paterson has thought proper [...] to write me officially that Mr. Barrallier's excursions were contrary to the Duke of York's instructions, I found myself obliged to give him up, and relinquish this highly desirable object for the present. I [was] concerned at it, as the young man has such ardour and perseverance that I judged much public benefit would have resulted to his credit and my satisfaction. [...] In conse quence, I [...] claimed him as my aide-de-camp, and mat the object of discovery should not be totally relinquished, I sent him on an embassy to the King of the Mountains. Governor Philip Gidley King3 Chris Cunningham, in his book Blue Mountains Rediscovered* quotes Mark Twain in Following the Equator (1831) as saying, "Australian history is full of surprises, and adventures, and incongruities, and contradictions and incredibilities, but they are all true, they all happened". -

I^HE origin of the family of Grant, like most families of Highland descent, is lost in the mists of antiquity. Many origins have been ascribed to it, including a Danish, a Norwegian, an English, an Irish, a Norman, and a Celtic one. In his " Chiefs of Grant " Sir William Fraser endeavours to set up the Norman theory, and by connecting the family with that of Byset of East Bridgeford, in Nottinghamshire, traces them to the north in the train of that family of Byset, who, in the reign of Alexander II., had become powerful in the province of Moray. In De Magny's list of the companions of William the Conqueror occurs the name of " Robert Grante." The Clan, however, has always favoured a Celtic origin, as being indi- genous to Strathspey, and derive the name Grant from a large moor called Griantach, or Sliabh Grianais, the plain of the sun. The earliest reference on record to the name connected with Scotland is that of Thomas Grant, merchant of the King of Scotland, who, on 2nd January, 1252, was deposed from his office of visor of York Castle. -

This forms part of Theme 25, “History of Colonial Cartography”, Session 1, Australasia, to be held on 11 July. The poster will consist of a sheet probably containing four maps, a list of landings on the Australian coast taken from the “Australia on the Map” website, and several blocks of text. The text to be included in your Proceedings is as follows:- AUSTRALIA ON THE MAP 1606 - 2006 “Australia on the Map 1606 – 2006” is a commemoration of the first European landfall on the Australian coast, and of subsequent coastal exploration by mariners of many nationalities. The first landing was by the Dutch ship Duyfken in March 1606, on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. She was captained by Willem Jansz in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which had been founded in 1602. He charted about 300km of the coast near present-day Weipa, as well as islands off the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. His original journals and charts have been lost, but a copy of his chart made in 1670 survives in the Van der Hem Atlas in the Osterreichische Nationalbibliotek in Vienna (see Fig. 1). In July/August 1606, Spanish captain Luis Vaez de Torres in the San Pedro and LosTres Reijes sailed through the strait later named after him, but did not touch the mainland. -

Macphersons Arriving in Victoria, 1840-1865
MACPHERSONS ARRIVING IN VICTORIA, 1840-1865 Alan G. Macpherson St John’s, Newfoundland 2005 The information presented here was extracted from ship lists of assisted immigrants in the State Archives of Victoria in the southern spring of 1988, Australia’s bicentennial year. It covers the period from 1840 to 1865 during which fifty-six ships (fifty-seven voyages) deposited 303 men, women and children of the name — most frequently ‘McPherson’ — on the shores of Victoria. Thirty-four of the voyages originated in Liverpool (60%), with Plymouth and Southampton sending three ships each, London and Greenock two each, Glasgow, Birkenhead and Queenstown (Cork) one each, and ten ships listed with no point of departure. Those ten ships — plus one from Greenock — arrived in the early years of immigration in Port Phillip, the bay which includes Melbourne and Geelong. Melbourne received twenty-one ships, Geelong fourteen, Portland Bay in western Victoria seven, Hobson’s Bay (Melourne) two, and Belfast (Port Fairy) one. The age profile of these immigrants peaked in the 21-25 year cohort (48), and diminished steadily thereafter, the oldest being Murdoch McPherson, the only man to proclaim himself to be an Inverness-shire crofter, aged sixty-five. As the name indicates, they were in the possession of the Brabourne family, but the name is misleading, and would be better changed to the Sir Joseph Banks papers, for such in reality they are.
