LIFE GOES ON few hours away, and from the video, we could It’s probably been close to 3 years since tell she was nicely started and already walk, I’ve written a P & P column. So much has trot and cantering quietly under , so off changed for me in that time. Most significantly, I we went. My trainer rode and liked her and retired and moved from Alexandria to Purcellville then it was my turn. I was of course, tense as – talk about a change in life styles! Max, my a board, but she handled that with aplomb, experiment in breeding, is now 2 – very cute and a much like she did the trucks cruising down total brat. Apparently, the combination of the the road and the lawn mowers that were out A pony is a childhood terrible twos combined with a pony brain is not the for the first trim of the season. But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. In home, my first comment to my trainer was January, I very suddenly lost Nikki, my really that while I thought she was a nice horse, I – Rebecca Carroll special mare. 2 PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MINUTES – VADA/Nova Board Meeting June 11, 2012– Morven Park Lounge

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. Twelve of the Board members were present and three were excused.

June minutes were accepted by the Board

Herbert Seiberl Clinic: Sheli reported that the clinician’s father took ill, and the clinic had to be cancelled. Given the very hot weather and the less than hoped for auditor turnout, this was prob- ably for the best. The Board discussed what we could possibly do in the future regarding clinics that would attract riders & auditors. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of interest in clinics; perhaps people are saving their money for show entries. Fortunately, VADA/Nova was not out of pocket too much money- less than $100.

Treasurer’s Report: Dilly reported that we have $7809.68 in the Special Account, and $54,273.27 in the Regular Account. The June Licensed show made a profit of approximately $6085.

Licensed Shows/Breed Show: Michelle reported that there were not a lot of entries to date, so an E-blast will be sent out to remind people. We are receiving Breed sponsorships from groups such as the Hanoverian Breeders (High Point award), Oldenbergs and Rhinelander Breeders.

Volunteers: Donna reported that almost all volunteer positions for the Youth Team show have been filled- though she may need more ring stewards.

Youth Team Show: Alison& Sheli reported that entries are OK so far, though maybe a down in numbers from last year’s show. The Friday night pizza party is being sponsored, and there will be a demo on Friday night.

August Schooling Show: Dilly reported for Jessie. There are 95 riders entered so far, so it’s not quite full (as of 2 weeks ago). The secretary’s “tent” will be set up next to the Davis Ring.

Membership: Barb said that we now have 358 members.

New Business: Alison reported that the DVCTA wants to do their “L” judge program at the Sept. 2013 show at Morven Park. VADA has it’s own “L” program, and we’ll have to check on those dates & venue.

Barb mentioned prizes for Year End Awards. The Board should start thinking about those now instead of waiting until November. Sheli said the Committee was looking into some different ideas for prizes, and that we’ve got a contract with River Creek Country Club for the Banquet to be in January, 2013.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Diann Landau, Secretary

11 12 Our Member of the Month for August is Katie Kelly. Katie discovered her love of horses at a very young age, and Member of the Month spent her childhood collecting Breyer models, reading Marguerite Henry books, and pretending her bicycle was a pony. Both her parents worked and were unable to take her for lessons, however as soon as she got her own driver’s license she began taking lessons at the local hunt seat riding school. She could only afford to take ½ of one lesson a week, but absolutely fell in love. According to Katie, while she loved her lessons she was a terrible hunt seat rider as she could not put her heels down. In college she was introduced to the discipline of dressage and hasn’t worried about her heels since. Katie first joined VADA/Nova in the early 90’s when she got her first dressage horse, a Trakehner/Thoroughbred named Lure. After living in MD for several years, Katie rejoined VADA/NOVA when she moved back to Northern Virginia in 2005 and has been a member ever since. Currently Katie has two horses. She has a 9 year old Hanoverian gelding named Figaro who is starting Third Level. She also has a 7 year old Friesian Sporthorse who is looking toward First Level. According to Katie they are both incredibly sweet and she feels very lucky to have two such wonderful horses. Originally from Alexandria, VA Katie now lives in Woodbridge with her husband Patrick, two busy kids Hannah and Ethan, and their two dogs Riley and Macy. Katie has a degree in vocal performance, and currently works as a freelance soprano soloist. This allows her to make her own hours so she can be at home for her children. Her hobbies are her horses and her children leaving little free time for anything else. When not competing, Katie likes to volunteer as a ring steward to watch the rides and chat with competitors.
