Date (inclusive): 1977-2010 Abstract: Materials related to Philip Gambone's book, Travels in a Gay Nation: Portraits of LGBTQ Americans, include interview transcripts, audio recordings of interviews, newspaper clippings, biographical information, book reviews, photographs and writing samples. The Gambone collection also includes eight volumes of Travels in a Gay Nation, two earlier versions of Travels in a Gay Nation, a manuscript of Living Out Our Lives: Catching the Heroic Spirit of the LGBTQ Americans, three volumes of autograph albums, and two project logs documenting Gambone's travels in the United States, 2007-2010. Biography Philip Gambone was born 21 July 1948 in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He completed his B.A. at Harvard College and M.A. at the Episcopal Divinity School. Gambone is a writer of various genres, ranging from fiction to non-fiction, anthologies, scholarly articles and journalism. His works center on gay and lesbian culture, as well as ancient and modern Chinese history and literature. Travels in a Gay Nation: Portraits of LGBTQ Americans (2010) provides a compilation of interviews with gay and lesbian writers and artists throughout the United States. Gambone's The Language We Use Up Here (Dutton 1991) and Beijin (Wisconsin 2003) were nominated for Lambda Literary Awards, and Something Inside: Conversation with Gay Fiction Writers (University of Wisconsin Press 1999) was named one of the "Best Books of 1999" in Pride. Gambone has also found a place for his work in Best American Short Stories, 1989 (Houghton Mifflin), and has received artist's fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the MacDowell Colony, and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation. Gambone worked as a writing instructor for the University of Massachusetts, Boston College and Harvard's expository writing program. He was a faculty member for twenty-seven years at The Park School in Brookline, Massachusetts. Now, he teaches English at Boston University Academy and Harvard's Extension writing program. For his work as an instructor, Gambone received the Distinguished Teaching Citations from Harvard and the James Conway Excellence in Teaching Writing Award (1991). The Gambone collection also includes eight volumes of papers related to Travels in a Gay Nation, two earlier versions of Travels in a Gay Nation, including a first version entitled, Living Out Our Lives: Catching the Heroic Spirit of the LGBTQ Americans, three volumes of autograph albums, and two project logs documenting Gambone's travels in the United States from 2007-2010. Note: each individual compact disc contains multiple interviews, and are arranged by the name first listed on the compact disc. This note also applies to those audiocassettes that include two or more subjects. Scope and Content This series includes printed materials and audio recordings dated 1977-2000. Printed materials consist of interview transcripts, newspaper clippings, biographical information, book reviews, 8 photographs and writing samples. Audio recordings of interviews are recorded on audiocassette tapes and compact discs.
