Subsurface information from three wells in the Tonto Basin, Gila County, Arizona by Stephen M. Richard Open-File Report 99-07 Arizona Geological Survey 416 W. Congress, #100, Tucson, Arizona 85701 March, 1999 This report is preliminary and has not been edited or reviewed for conformity with Ari zona Geological Survey standards INTRODUCTION Three wells drilled in the Tonto Basin have been studied to assist in the interpretation of subsurface geology of the basin. These are the Forest Service Windy Hill Test #1, drilled in 1991, the Sanchez O'Brien Federal 1-4, drilled in 1983, and the Kerber 1 Federal, drilled in 1969. Locations and other in formation about the wells are included in Table 1. GEOLOGIC SETTING Mountain ranges surrounding the Tonto Basin consist of Early to Middle Proterozoic granitic and metamorphic rocks, overlain by Middle Proterozoic strata of the Apache Group and lower Paleozoic clastic and carbonate strata. Tertiary volcanic rocks overlie these units around the southeastern part of the basin. The physiographic Tonto basin consists of two geologic sub-basins, apparent on the depth-to bedrock map for Arizona [Oppenheimer and Sumner, 1980]. A bedrock high between the area of Tonto National Monument and Windy Hill, then north from Windy Hill separates the sub-basins. The wells described in this report are from the southern part of the northern sub-basin and the transition zone be tween the sub-basins. Paleozoic and Precambrian rocks In the area of the bedrock high separating the two sub-basins of the Tonto Basin, Devonian and Mississippian sandstone, limestone and dolomite are preserved overlying the Apache Group. -

Dark Sky Sanctuaries in Arizona
Dark Sky Sanctuaries in Arizona Eric Menasco NPS Terry Reiners Arizona is the astrotourism capital of the United States. Its diverse landscape—from the Grand Canyon and ponderosa forests in the north to the Sonoran Desert and “sky islands” in the south—is home to more certified Dark Sky Places than any other U.S. state. In fact, no country outside the U.S. can rival Arizona’s 16 dark-sky communities and parks. Arizona helped birth the dark-sky preservation movement when, in 2001, the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) designated Flagstaff as the world’s very first Dark Sky Place for the city’s commitment to protecting its stargazing- friendly night skies. Since then, six other Arizona communities—Sedona, Big Park, Camp Verde, Thunder Mountain Pootseev Nightsky and Fountain Hills—have earned Dark Sky status from the IDA. Arizona also boasts nine Dark Sky Parks, defined by the IDA as lands with “exceptional quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.” The most famous of these is Grand Canyon National Park, where remarkably beautiful night skies lend draw-dropping credence to the Park Service’s reminder that “half the park is after dark Of the 16 Certified IDA International Dark Sky Communities in the US, 6 are in Arizona. College Avenue, Tempe, AZ 85281 Phone: 480-387-5355, Email: [email protected] HISTORICAL NOTE Theodore Roosevelt Dam is on the Salt River located northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The dam is 357 feet (109 m) high and was built between 1905 and 1911, and renovated 1989 - 1996. The dam has a hydroelectric generating capacity of 36,000 kW. The dam forms the Theodore Roosevelt Lake as it impounds the Salt River. Construction on Roosevelt Dam began in 1903 at the confluence of Tonto Creek and the Salt River. The primary purpose of the project was to provide water storage for the Salt River Project and flood control through the Salt River Valley. The dam was finished in 1911 after several devastating floods had interrupted the construction progress in 1905. At the time of completion in 1911, it was the largest masonry dam in the world with a height of 280 feet (84 m) and a length of 723 feet (216 m) while Roosevelt Lake was for a time the world's largest artificial reservoir. In 1989, an ambitious expansion and renovation project was begun at Roosevelt Dam. The dam was resurfaced with concrete, by J.A. Jones Construction Company, and its height was raised 77 feet (23 m) to 357 feet (107 m) which had the effect of increasing the storage capacity of Roosevelt Lake by roughly 20%. -

Indian Wars in Arizona Territory The stage line brought many more whites through the Pima villages, but the Civil War had an even greater effect. Far from the center stage, the major impact of the war in Arizona slowed the pace of white settlement. When the army abandoned their posts throughout the state in order to send soldiers east, Apaches raids increased. Although Arizona’s contributions to the national conflict were minimal, the Pimas and Maricopas played a key role in the western war. While the Pimas and Maricopas continued to augment their economic alliance with the whites, they also expanded the other valuable service they had provided since the days of the Spaniards— protection from the Apaches. One of the first accounts of an American/Indian military alliance is recounted in the Pima calendar sticks which relate that the Pimas and Maricopas joined with white soldiers in a campaign against the Apaches under White Hat, in 1856 or 1857. As long as whites were just passing through, the protection Gileños (Pimas and Maricopas) provided for their supply trains was sufficient. Pimas and Maricopas fulfilled this need with regular punitive raids against the Apaches several times a year, keeping them away from Pima lands but stopping short of attacking their enemies' mountain rancherías (farm/camps). As the white population increased, so did Apache raids. When gold was discovered in the Weaver and Walker diggings near Prescott, miners flocking to the area found themselves much closer to Apache homelands than was prudent. By the spring of 1863, the Apaches had attacked and murdered several small parties of prospectors and miners. -
