FUNDED BY EARTH ECONOMICS i ABSTRACT This study presents an economic characterization of the value of ecosystem services in the Colorado River Basin, a 249,000 square mile region spanning across mountains, plateaus, and low-lying valleys of the American Southwest. Colorado River Basin ecosystems provide a suite of ecosystem services including drinking and irrigation water, flood control, and world- renowned recreational opportunities. This study calculates the economic value provided by these ecosystems. We used existing studies on the value of ecosystem services for land cover types found in the basin; these land cover types were assessed using Geological Information System (GIS) data. Several new primary values for ecosystem services in the Colorado River Basin were also derived as part of this study. The natural benefits (ecosystem services) examined in this study include potable water, irrigation water, carbon sequestration, flood risk reduction, water filtration, wildlife habitat, soil erosion reduction, soil formation, raw materials, food, recreation, air quality, and aesthetic value. Whether land is in private or public ownership, that value, in the form of water supply, flood risk reduction, recreation, and other benefits, is distributed across the landscape. The economic vitality of communities depends upon it. Healthy natural systems provide vast economic value, and investing in natural capital provides a high rate of return. It is written by a core-team of authors from the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Green Economy Coalition, World Bank WAVES Programme and Natural Capital Coalition and builds on contributions from the Narrative Working (France, Germany, Ghana, Japan, Netherlands, Nigeria, South Africa, United Kingdom, CISL, European Commission ICAEW and IUCN, plus the core-team members mentioned before). Oertel and Annette Richards The following article is based on a Symposium X (Frontiers of Materials Research) presentation given at the 2016 MRS Spring Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. Historical pipe organs offer rich insights into the relationships between materials and music in the past, and they represent a laboratory for contemporary materials science. Recent cross- disciplinary research has explored problems of conservation and corrosion in old organ pipes. The ability of some notable European Baroque organs to produce sound is threatened by atmospheric corrosion of their lead-tin alloy pipes. Organic acids emitted from the wood of organ cases are corrosive agents for lead-rich pipes. Laboratory exposure experiments were used to study the roles of humidity and alloy composition in the susceptibility to organic acid attack. The rates of growth, as well as the compositions and morphologies of the corrosion products were studied using gravimetry, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy of surfaces and cross sections. This interdisciplinary project provides one model for the interplay of scientifi c and humanities research in addressing materials problems in cultural heritage.     Dark Sky Sanctuaries in Arizona Eric Menasco NPS Terry Reiners Arizona is the astrotourism capital of the United States. Its diverse landscape—from the Grand Canyon and ponderosa forests in the north to the Sonoran Desert and “sky islands” in the south—is home to more certified Dark Sky Places than any other U.S. state. In fact, no country outside the U.S. can rival Arizona’s 16 dark-sky communities and parks. Arizona helped birth the dark-sky preservation movement when, in 2001, the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) designated Flagstaff as the world’s very first Dark Sky Place for the city’s commitment to protecting its stargazing- friendly night skies. Since then, six other Arizona communities—Sedona, Big Park, Camp Verde, Thunder Mountain Pootseev Nightsky and Fountain Hills—have earned Dark Sky status from the IDA.
