The London Symphony Orchestra As the resident orchestra of the , the LSO presents some 70 concerts there each year, performing the highest quality music from the core symphonic repertoire, as well as music by living or lesser known composers. Other concert engagements in the UK provide additional opportunities for the Orchestra to be heard nationally whilst the Orchestra’s major international touring programme brings the LSO to a global audience, particularly through annual residencies in New York and Paris and regular visits to Japan, China, the USA and Europe.

The LSO’s activities also include an inspirational and pioneering education and community programme, LSO Discovery, and an award winning record label, LSO Live which enables the Orchestra’s music to be heard by a global audience through digital recordings. LSO St Luke’s, the UBS and LSO music education centre, adds a unique dimension to the work of the Orchestra, being the home of LSO Discovery, LSO rehearsals, and a substantial public concert programme, with many performances broadcast by the BBC.

Each year 60,000 people participate in LSO Discovery projects with many more taking part through distance learning.

Role Overview This post provides an exciting opportunity for a creative, collaborative and highly organised individual to develop LSO Discovery’s work with schools as well as LSO Sing. The individual will be responsible for a vibrant and varied programme encompassing LSO Family and Key Stage concerts and related INSET days, the London Symphony Chorus, LSO Community , LSO Discovery Choir and LSO Singing Days.

Holding an important remit within LSO Discovery’s First Access team, the post-holder will have the overview of the LSO Sing strategy and large-scale vocal projects engaging with the community as well as an exciting opportunity to develop the LSO’s school engagement strategy and teacher resources. The post reports to the Head of LSO Discovery and will have access to coordinator support, and will work closely with the LSO Choral Director, , the LSC Council as well as numerous presenters and workshop leaders.

KEY DUTIES

Programme Development  Responsibility for the overall delivery of LSO Sing, including the LSO’s choral ensembles and development of large-scale vocal projects  Maintain excellent relationships with choral music personnel (Simon Halsey and the LSO’s team of vocal leaders) as well as project participants and choir members  Develop an annual programme of Family and Key Stage concerts and teacher INSET days, together with the LSO’s regular presenters and animateurs (in collaboration with the Community Projects Manager)  Increase engagement with schools and teachers, including developing and sharing resources for teachers, in collaboration with the Head of LSO Discovery and with the LSO On Track Projects Manager  Make contact and meet with possible project partners and artists who may be involved in the implementation of projects  Together with the Head of LSO Discovery, respond to strategic developments in Discovery work on a local, regional and national scale for schools and vocal work

Project Management  Support of overall management of the London Symphony Chorus, in close consultation with Simon Halsey and the LSC Council, including creating and maintaining the Chorus schedule, sending regular updates to the Chorus membership and artistic personnel  Ensure good lines of communication between the LSC and the LSO  Booking conductors, rehearsal venues and pianists for the LSC rehearsal, concert and performance schedule  Liaise with the LSO Concerts department in the smooth running of concerts and projects involving the Chorus  Attend LSC council meetings as and when appropriate  Oversee the planning and scheduling of the LSO Community and Discovery , and LSO Singing Days, together with the Discovery Coordinator, ensuring that the projects are suited to the needs of the participants  Manage the LSO Family and Key Stage concerts for schools and their related INSET days, liaising with the presenters, conductors and players  Manage the events that form part of the Choral and Schools programme  Work with the LSO Marketing team to provide copy and publicity information about the Choral and Schools programmes when required  Manage budgets and monitor project income and expenditure across the Choral and Schools projects  Ensure ArtsVision (the LSO’s scheduling calendar) is kept up-to-date with relevant schedule and fee information, and contacts

Development and Fundraising  Work closely with the Development team in fundraising activity for Schools and Choral projects  Attend meetings with funders or potential funders when appropriate  Draft information for funding bids and prepare material for periodic funding reports  Ensure that all key stakeholders are kept informed of developments

Other  Line-management of the Discovery Coordinator (Choral and Schools)  Out-of-hours and weekend support at events are required for this role  Assist in the event management of other LSO Discovery projects as required  Any other reasonable duties and support on other LSO Discovery activities as may be required

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Essential  At least three years of relevant experience, preferably in an arts organisation  Knowledge of classical music and orchestras  A commitment to, and knowledge of, music education  Experience of project-managing large-scale music education projects and concerts  Interest in creative work with schools  Interest in Choral music and the role of vocal ensembles linked to an orchestra  Score-reading/marking ability  Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written  Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain good relationships with different stakeholders, including volunteers  Ability to effectively manage and prioritise a busy workload  Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Word, Excel, databases, and Outlook

Desirable  Experience of working with young people and teachers  Experience of working with choral and vocal ensembles  Knowledge of choral music

TERMS AND CONDITIONS • Salary Range: £28,000 to £30,750 per annum, according to experience • Normal working hours: 9.30-18:00, Monday-Friday, plus evening and weekend work as required for which overtime is not paid • Notice Period: three months. • Probationary period: six months. • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays. • Interest-free loan for a season travel ticket. • Subsidised catering facilities provided by the Barbican Centre. • Membership of company pension scheme as follows: o In line with auto-enrolment regulations during first year of service. o 5% employer contributions and 2% employee contributions after 1 year’s employment. • Non-contributory private healthcare scheme.* • Company income protection insurance.* • Cycle to work scheme. • Tickets to London Symphony Orchestra and LSO St Luke’s concerts. * after completion of one year’s employment

The LSO’s offices are based at the Barbican Centre, London and a number of LSO Discovery projects also take place at LSO St Luke’s on Old Street and at the Guildhall School next to the Barbican Centre.
