  • Groundbreaking Television Coverage of LGBT Milestones Now Online
June 30, 2015 Groundbreaking television coverage of LGBT milestones now online UCLA Film & Television Archive, Outfest launch landmark LGBT resource Kelly Graml, [email protected] 310-206-8588 Comedian Kate Clinton’s “coming out” remembrance, coverage of the watershed 1993 march on Washington and the story of murdered transgender teen Fred Martinez are just a few examples of the remarkable new digital portal created by UCLA Film & Television Archive. The videos — and a wealth of other resources —are now publicly accessible online as part of a new lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender moving image research area featuring episodes of the Emmy-nominated LGBT public television series In the Life. In addition to episodes from the TV program, the portal also features other contextualizing material, including a commissioned essay, “The Time of Our Lives: In the Life – America’s LGBT News Magazine,” by Stephen Tropiano, Ithaca College; an oral history with seminal indie filmmaker Pat Rocco; a lecture by LGBT scholar Lillian Faderman; and a list of LGBT media, history and advocacy resources. The portal’s launch, which is part of the UCLA Film & Television Archive’s 50th anniversary celebration, builds on its previous efforts with the non-profit Outfest through the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project. The Legacy Project, founded in 2005, works to preserve both the history and the future of LGBT moving image materials by convening symposia, educating filmmakers about proper stewardship of their work, restoring materials that are at risk and encouraging the use of collection materials — which now number more than 35,000 titles. “Preserving and providing public access to LGBT media materials is important not only for scholars, researchers, filmmakers and historians worldwide but also for the broader society,” said Jan-Christopher Horak, director of UCLA Film & Television Archive.

A New Queer Trinity: A Semiotic, Genre Theory, and Auto-Ethnographic Examination of Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jessica L. Hey, MA, BA Graduate Program in Arts Administration, Education and Policy The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: James H. Sanders III, Advisor Shari M. Savage Deborah L. Smith-Shank Copyright by Jessica L. Hey 2017 ABSTRACT This doctoral study concerns itself with the visual representations of The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival (a.k.a. Reeling) with specific attention paid to their marketing campaign materials, as exemplified by the annually created festival POSTER. It is my aim to situate these posters alongside the historical contexts of queer identity, socio- political advocacy, and LGBTQ+ cinema. This analysis will navigate the 36-year period of the festival organization’s existence, providing key, in-depth interrogations into the decades, images, and trends both visual and narrative. My unpacking and theoretical discussions of the festival’s visual culture has been informed by the practices of semiotics and film genre theory. These methods were employed to answer the primary research question: How have the POSTER advertisements, as visual signifiers for The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, symbolized their organization’s mission, represented queer identities, and engaged with the politically

LGBT History Spring 2019- 21:512:204 Section 01 Rutgers University-Newark Course Time: Thursday 2:30 PM - 5:20 PM Location: Hill Hall 106 Instructor: Andrew Lester Office: Conklin 245 Office Hours: by appointment Email: [email protected] In this course, we will examine the historical emergence and construction of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities in the late 19th and 20th century United States from a variety of angles. We will study a range of texts such as essays, news articles, films, songs, and fictional literature to historicize how sexual identities were formed, framed, policed, politicized, and theorized over the course of the 20th century. The course will address topics such as homosexuality in the turn-of-the-century United States, sex in the Harlem Renaissance, sexual politics during the Depression, and the homophile and sexual liberation movements in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The ways in which LGBT as an umbrella term is always mediated by race, class, gender, and other social variables will also be a critical theme in the course. Course Objectives: • Concisely identifying the main argument of a text. • Understanding what a historical document can tell us about the context in which it was made. • Familiarizing students with the history of gender and sexuality in US society and culture. • Studying and understanding how gender and sexual identities changed over time • Analyzing gender and sexuality through multiple kinds of sources. • Developing skills in thinking and writing about gender and sexuality historically • Gaining an understanding of the history of social movements involving sexuality and gender.
