BLUE PRIZE

A grade one winner and classic placed in just four starts in Argentina, Blue Prize has been a fixture among North America’s best dirt middle-distance fillies. Now, with her victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), she has a strong claim to be considered as the outstanding dirt female of 2019.

Racing in Argentina, Blue Prize won her on her debut, and on her farewell, she captured the Gran Premio Seleccion (G1) defeating classic winner Hispanidad. In between those two victories, Blue Prize took second in the Clasico General Luis Maria Campos (G2), and second beaten a neck in the Gran Premio Polla de Potrancas (G1).

In the U.S., Blue Prize gained a place in history following Bornastar, and Take Charge Lady to become only the second distaffer to claim back-to- back victories in the (G1). In the 2019 edition she defeated an outstanding field headed by the formidable Elate, and the grade one winners Dunbar Road and She’s a Julie. Her 2018 Spinster Stakes (G1) saw her triumph over a strong field that included grade one winner Eskimo Kisses, and graded winners Chocolate Martini, Pacific Wind, Champagne Problems, Talk Veuve to Me, Sassy Sienna, Tiger Moth and Skeptic. The 2018 Spinster was the third successive graded stakes triumph for Blue Prize, who had taken the Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2) and Locust Grove Stakes (G3) on her previous two starts. In the Fleur de Lis she had daylight to spare over the runner-up, the five-time graded winner Farrell and other graded scorers Mopotism, Song of Spring, Valadorna and Streamline. In the Locust Grove, she out fought Champagne Problems, with grade one winner Sailor’s Valentine, Tiger Moth and Streamline all behind.

Blue Prize had gained an earlier graded stakes win when romping by 8½ lengths from Tiger Moth, graded winner Money’soncharlotte, and stakes winners Faithfully and Rachel’s Temper in the (G2). Blue Prize has also captured two other black-type events. The Top Flight Stakes saw

This year Blue Prize began a winning streak with determined effort to take the Summer Colony Stakes at Saratoga, defeating graded stakes winners Vexatious, Pacific Wind and Skeptic.

Blue Prize concluded a wonderful career in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), with a decisive victory over Midnight Bisou – undefeated in seven previous starts in 2019 – with (G1) heroine Serengeti Empress, and grade one winners Paradise Woods, La Force, Secret Spice, Street Band, Ollie’s Candy, Dunbar Road and Wow Cat all behind. With this performance, and a victory over Elate, in her last two starts, Blue Prize has strong claims to be considered the best female dirt runner in training.

Blue Prize is by the beautifully bred son, Pure Prize. Twice Leading Sire in Argentina, Pure Prize is sire of nearly 90 stakes winners, including Blue Prize, Pure Clan, Hi Happy, Winning Prize and Pure Fun, all grade one winners in the U.S.

Blue Prize’s dam, Blues for Sale is a multiple graded stakes winning sprinter/miler. She is also a sister to Cure for Sale, a stakes winner in Argentina, and a multiple graded winner placed runner in the U.S. The third dam, Dancer’s Key, is out of Dancer’s Saga, a sister multiple graded winner Northern Sea, the dam of Southern Halo, a multiple Champion Sire whose offspring include the internationally influential stallion More Than Ready. This is the family descending from Sea Saga – who captured the Ladies Handicap which was then an equivalent to a grade one event – and is ancestress of nearly 50 stakes winners, ten grade one, also including A Shin Hikari, General Challenge, Evening Jewel, Sir Beaufort and Denman’s Call.
