COMMERCIAL EVENTS IN THE FLINDERS RANGES NATIONAL PARK

Are you planning a special event in the Flinders Ranges National Park?

There are many sites with breathtaking views and dramatic landscapes that are ideal for larger corporate or special events. Smaller scale, intimate venues appeal for weddings and milestone celebrations. The Heysen and Mawson Trails both traverse the Park and are a 'must-do' for bushwalkers and mountain bikers. The Park has established special event guidelines to help you enjoy the park, and to make sure our sensitive ecosystems and cultural sites are treated with care. In accordance with the National Park and Wildlife Act 1972, commercial event activities in the Flinders Ranges National Park must be licenced. All activities that are of a commercial nature not held inside the Wilpena Resort, but are inside the park, are deemed as an event and require the completion of an application. Weddings are deemed “public gatherings” under the Act. Therefore, weddings do not require an event licence, but do require approval. If you intend to be married within the Flinders Ranges National Park, contact the Wilpena office on (08) 8648 0049.

Co-management Obligations The Flinders Ranges National Park Co-management Board (FRNP CMB) has approved the following standard conditions that must be included into all commercial event applications: • The Board strongly recommends building in a cultural awareness activity, in particular “Welcome to Country” (authorised Adnyamathanha person). • The Board strongly recommends that event organisers in the first instance, engage with the broader Adnyamathanha community to discuss being involved in all areas of event delivery (volunteer or employment basis). • Promotional material for events to acknowledge traditional owners and include a provision for cultural sensitivity. • That no events include the use of didgeridoos or drums as the sounds from these musical instruments are culturally inappropriate. Protection of Adnyamathanha (traditional owners) heritage and culture In accordance with the legal agreement, there is a requirement for the State (which includes the FRNP CMB) to consult with the Adnyamathanha Traditional Lands Association (ATLA) to determine if the activities will damage, disturb or interfere with an Adnyamathanha site, object or remain. Accordingly, it is the role of Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources/FRNP CMB to seek comment from ATLA before any filming or event occurs on the Park. Adnyamathanha people acknowledge the creation of significant places through Yura Muda (history stories). Interpretation of Adnyamathanha (traditional owners) culture by a non-Adnyamathanha person requires approval from the Board and ATLA and must be included in your event application.
