    Russian Film Festival in Scotland th th 4 November to 29 November 2012 0 The Princess Dashkova Russian Centre is pleased to announce the 2012 Russian Film Festival in Scotland, organised in collaboration with Academia Rossica and Edinburgh Filmhouse. The Festival will present the UK premieres of the most outstanding, cutting edge and award winning Russian films of the past year. The films will be screened at the Edinburgh Filmhouse and the Princess Dashkova Russian Centre, the University of Edinburgh. The films will be accompanied by discussions and Q&A sessions. The film Living (Zhit’) will be presented by its world- renowned film director Vasilii Sigarev and the leading actor Yana Troyanova. The documentary of the recent Russian protest movement, Winter Go Away! (Zima, Ukhodi!) will be accompanied by a talk by the acclaimed film critic and journalist Dr Andrei Plakhov. Another highlight of the Russian Film Festival will be the season of films by the legendary Andrei Konchalovsky, presented by the director himself. A collaboration between the Princess Dashkova Russian Centre, University of Edinburgh, Academia Rossica, and the Edinburgh Filmhouse. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council; Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies (CRCEES), University of Glasgow. By Stella Chen & Saba Mehrzad, Editors-In-Chiefs As June draws closer, many seniors are wondering what the end of their high school experience will look like. For many, prom is an eagerly anticipated celebration. “Prom is obviously a staple of senior year,” says Syosset senior Pooja Huded. “Most of the grade has been expecting it for years. It would be nice to have some sense of normalcy for at least one thing since we missed out on a lot this year. But I want a safe prom.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Student Government faces the challenge of balancing safety with student enjoyment.     Religious Themes in Recent Soviet Cinema JOHN B. DUNLOP Like Soviet literature, Soviet cinema has in recent decades exhibited a persistent interest in religious themes, though this has usually been expressed in Aesopian fashion. The reason for the often elliptical and coded articulation of this interest has been the rigorous Soviet censorship. Lenin, as is well known, once termed the cinema "the most important art", because of its potential to reach a mass audience, and the Soviet authorities have traditionally subjected film to extremely close scrutiny. During the long Brezhnev years, films which raised serious questions about their possible political or ideational effect on viewers were placed on the shelf.) Instead of combing through Soviet cinema over the past thirty years for evidence of religious leanings, I have decided to concentrate on two distinguished modern filmmakers who, unlike other Soviet directors, have had the opportunity to make their religious commitment explicit: the late Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-86) and Andrei Konchalovsky (b. 1937). A number of other Soviet filmmakers also appear to have a keen interest in religious themes. One could cite, for example, the nameS of the late Vasili Shukshin (1929-74); the late Larisa Shepitko (1938-79); Elem Klimov (b. 1933), the recently-elected first secretary of the filmmakers' union; Rolan Bykov (b. 1929), ,director of the acclaimed Scarecrow (Chuche/o) (1984); and Georgian 'lfilm-maker Tengiz Abuladze (b. 1924), whose remarkable Repentance (Monanieba) (1984) took Moscow by storm when released in 1987. Since these individuals did not have the opportunity· to work in the West, however, the extent of their religious commitment remains problematic.
