Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series o... 1 Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series of the 1960s and early 1970s Dennis Tredy 1 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in a somewhat failed attempt to wrestle some high ratings away from the network leader CBS, ABC would produce a spate of supernatural sitcoms, soap operas and investigative dramas, adapting and borrowing heavily from major works of Gothic literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The trend began in 1964, when ABC produced the sitcom The Addams Family (1964-66), based on works of cartoonist Charles Addams, and CBS countered with its own The Munsters (CBS, 1964-66) –both satirical inversions of the American ideal sitcom family in which various monsters and freaks from Gothic literature and classic horror films form a family of misfits that somehow thrive in middle-class, suburban America. -

The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked. -

'Tortured' Reasoning for Snubbing 'Zero'? by Christy Lemire January
‘Tortured’ reasoning for snubbing ‘Zero’? By Christy Lemire January 16, 2013 A few weeks ago, “Zero Dark Thirty” seemed well on its way to capturing the Academy Award for best picture. It was winning early critic awards and gaining the kind of momentum a movie needs to win Hollywood’s biggest prize. Much was made about the authenticity of the film by director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who used insider access to tell the sweeping, meticulously detailed story of the decade-long search for Osama bin Laden. Then last week, “Zero Dark Thirty” won five Academy Award nominations, including for best picture, and this past weekend, it was No. 1 at the domestic box office with a gross of nearly $25 million. Yet what may be the film’s biggest challenge in the pursuit of Oscar glory is playing out from Hollywood to Washington as debate mounts over the film’s accuracy in its depiction of what some regard as torture and whether the movie itself endorses the use of torture. Lawmakers are also investigating whether the CIA gave Ms. Bigelow and Mr. Boal false information as to whether enhanced-interrogation tactics led directly to the 2011 capture and killing of the al Qaeda leader in Pakistan. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences failed to nominate Ms. Bigelow for director, and on Sunday night, “Zero Dark Thirty” received only one Golden Globe award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — for best actress Jessica Chastain’s portrayal of a driven CIA operative. Could congressional scrutiny over such an emotionally charged issue as alleged torture be affecting the film’s awards momentum? Will the bicoastal backlash ultimately prevent the film from winning the best picture award when the Oscars are presented on Feb. -
Hollywood Loving
HOLLYWOOD LOVING Kevin Noble Maillard* INTRODUCTION It is no coincidence that Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner1 was released the same year that Loving v. Virginia2 was decided: 1967. It was the first time in American history that interracial marriage was collectively recognized as a legitimate, intimate choice between two adults. This public exposition of racial intermixture exposed a collective memory of racial heterogeneity previously treated in law and popular culture as suspect. Collectively, there were few possibilities, expressions, or affirmative realizations of interracially intimate culture before 1967. Some cases, like McLaughlin v. Florida3 and Perez v. Sharp,4 successfully overturned discriminatory laws targeting interracial couples, but the vast majority, like Naim v. Naim,5 upheld them. * Professor of Law, Syracuse University. Thank you to the student editors of the Fordham Law Review and to the Fordham Professors Robin Lenhardt and Tanya Katerí Hernández for organizing the Symposium entitled Fifty Years of Loving v. Virginia and the Continued Pursuit of Racial Equality held at Fordham University School of Law on November 2–3, 2017. Holding up Half the Sky Global Narratives of Girls at Risk and Celebrity Philanthropy
Holding Up Half the Sky Global Narratives of Girls at Risk and Celebrity Philanthropy Angharad Valdivia a Abstract: In this article I explore the Half the Sky (HTS) phenomenon, including the documentary shown on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) network in 2014. I explore how the girls in whose name the HTS movement exists are repre- sented in relation to Nicholas Kristoff and six celebrity advocates. This analysis foregrounds Global North philanthropy’s discursive use of Global South girls to advance a neoliberal approach that ignores structural forces that account for Global South poverty. The upbeat use of the concept of opportunities interpellates the audience into participating in individualized approaches to rescuing girls. Ulti- mately girls are spoken for while celebrities gain more exposure and therefore increase their brand recognition. Keywords: Global South, Media Studies, neoliberalism, philitainment, representation, white savior b Girls figure prominently as a symbol in global discourses of philanthropy. The use of girls from the Global South lends authority and legitimacy to Western savior neoliberal impulses, in which the logic of philanthropy shifts responsibility for social issues from governments to individuals and corpo- rations through the marketplace, therefore help and intervention are “encouraged through privatization and liberalization” (Shome 2014: 119). Foregrounding charitable activities becomes an essential component of celebrity branding and corporate public relations that seek representation of their actions as cosmopolitan morality and global citizenry. Focusing on the Half the Sky (HTS) phenomenon that culminated in a documentary by Maro Chermayeff (2012) shown on the PBS network in 2014, in this article I examine the agency and representation of six celebrity advocates in relation to the girls in whose name the HTS movement exists. -

Night is drawing nearer and nearer to Collinwood. Another man has come—a stranger who is not a stranger. Everyone pushes Willie Loomis around, like a scarecrow, and he only makes it worse busting Barnabas Collins from his casket. That’s Barnabas, looking as if he were alive, posing next to his ancient portrait at the foot of the stairs. Barnabas Collins, source of my childhood nightmares, rolls the “r” in “Victoria” with a lilt, a graceful excess, prim and courtly and swallowing blood. _________________________ Over drinks at The Blue Whale, Burke spends half an episode apologizing to Carolyn, who walks out when the samba music starts. Two great houses in Collinwood, Barnabas compares one to the pyramids of Egypt: “The plaster walls were made from crushed clamshells and horsehair.” Joe, distracted at The Blue Whale, keeps seeing that little calf drained of his blood (but doesn’t seem to notice the half-shell ashtrays).
