14th Jan 2014 From Dean’s desk The twin institutes of the Seth GS Medical College and KEM hospital were established in 1926 with a nationalistic spirit to cater to the ―health care needs of the northern parts of the island‖ to be manned entirely by Indian doctors. With a glorious legacy of over 80 years, 10 lakh patients and 50,000 plus surgeries annually, these institutes are amongst the top ranked in the country and city with the Latin maxim ―Non sibi sed Omnibus‖- not for self, but for all‖, embedded in every heart. The year 2013 was marked by several achievements. New equipment and services that aided patient care were made possible through funds from the municipal corporation, government agencies and munificent donations of individuals and trustees- deep brain stimulation was started for patients with Parkinson‘s disease, a new rural health training center was established at Pise-Panjrapur, a clinic for families of patients with lysosomal storage disorders was started, a liver transplant outpatient clinic was started as also an outpatient pain clinic. The department of plastic surgery organized the ―Camp Karma‖ for children who were burn survivors, while the department of cardiology established a whats app mobile application whereby ECGs of patients with chest pain are viewed by senior faculty on a whats app care group. The departments of Nephrology and Urology performed a renal transplant successfully on a patient who was HIV positive. The department of Endocrinology established an ambassador exchange program with an institute from the United States, and several departments received recognition from the Medical Council of India. Postgraduate students won several awards and travel scholarships. Several faculty members initiated new fellowships in their departments under the aegis of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and several students successfully cleared the fellowship exams. Numerous conferences and CMEs were organized and a large number of papers published. Where do we go from here? Plans for 2014 are already gathering momentum. Another Cath lab and a ECHO-color Doppler machine are in the pipeline, a foot care service clinic for patients with diabetes, setting up of a liver ICU, bariatric surgery, expansion of the cadaver donation program, a neurovascular laboratory, computer navigation assisted spinal surgery and arthroplasty, setting up of new modular OTs, several new fellowships, teaching innovations and much more. It is hoped that these developments will constructively change the institutes for the betterment of patients, greater efficiency of its enormous staff, and help sound training of its students and resident medical doctors, not to forget the support staff, nursing school and her alumni. At the end of the day, however as several thousand patients walk through these hallowed portals each year with hope in their hearts, it will remain our primary responsibility to ensure that they get the best medical care from kind, caring and compassionate physicians- hands that comfort, soothe and heal. In the words of Bob Dole, ―when it is all over, its not who you were. It‘s whether you made a difference. Shubhangi Parkar Ag Dean – Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital 1 Editor’s note At the dawn of 2013, we are ready to embark on another journey and look forward to yet another foundation day. It is time again to take stock and look at the year that was; what was achieved, what went wrong, where we could improve and where do we go ahead from here. The annual report in its individual chapters looks at the work, the teaching, the research, publications, awards, achievements and much more. The experience of putting this document together has been both humbling and enlightening. Thanks is due to Dr SR Parkar for her faith and patience in me. I am also thankful to all heads of department and staff members for having sent the information on time. Shri Uttam Chapte deserves appreciation for the photographs. The team that helped me put this report together also deserves special thanks. I owe a debt of gratitude to my colleagues from my department- Saket Thaker, Brinal Figer and Ujwala Parulekar for their untiring efforts at follow up. Thanks are due to Ratnadeep Printers p for painstaking editing, formatting and inputs in the cover design. While the compilation has been done with utmost care over a two week period, its sheer magnitude and diversity may have led to omissions and inadvertent errors. We request the staff members to bear with us. Efforts have gone into making the document comprehensive, yet discerning. It is hoped that as one sifts through the pages, the quality and quantum of patient care, education and research come through and we look ahead to 2014 with new hope and zest.
