FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE MEDIA PACK PRESENTATION The Alliance Française of Johannesburg, the French Institute of South Africa and Bassline are proud to announce the 5th edition of the Fête de La Musique, taking place on Saturday June 18th 2016. Last year over 6,000 people gathered in Newtown Junction to enjoy this celebration of music in all its forms as well as dance and street performance. With its previous success, Newtown Junction confirmed its position as the ideal location for this festive day. In 2016, 6 stages will be set up to offer a wide panel of free shows. Esa Alexander/The Times Trumpeter, flugelhorn-player, singer, composer and activist Hugh Ramapolo Masekela Author has passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer. When he cancelled his appearance last year at the Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival, taking time out to deal with his serious health issues, fans were forced to return to his recorded opus for reminders of his unique work. Listening through that half-century of Gwen Ansell Associate of the Gordon Institute for disks, the nature and scope of the trumpeter’s achievement becomes clear. The first was part-mythical: the life of jazz great Bix Biederbecke filtered through Kirk Douglas’s acting and Harry James’s trumpet, in the 1950 movie “Young Man With A Horn”. Masekela saw the film as a schoolboy at the Harlem Bioscope in Johannesburg’s Sophiatown. The erstwhile chorister resolved “then and there to become a trumpet player”. The second horn hero, unsurprisingly, was Miles Davis. And while Masekela’s accessible, storytelling style and lyrical instrumental tone are very different, he shared one important characteristic with the American: his life and music were marked by constant reinvention. -

5 Arts and culture The Department of Arts and Culture aims to develop and preserve South African culture to ensure social cohesion and nation-building. It is the custodian of South Africa’s diverse cultural, artistic and linguistic heritage. Funding A large portion of the department’s budget is dedicated to supporting and developing institutional infrastructure to showcase, restore and preserve South Africa’s heritage for future generations. The Arts and Culture in Society Programme develops and promotes arts and culture in South Africa and mainstreams their role in social development. It funds performing arts institutions, orchestras, the National Arts Council (NAC) and the Promotion of Arts and Culture in South Africa Subprogramme. During 2004/05, the department funded the establishment of two large instrumental ensembles – one in Cape Town and the other in Johannesburg. A music train- ing programme directed at township youth in Gauteng also received a grant. The department funds six playhouses. In 2004/05, it contributed over R89 million towards the running of these institutions. In 2005/06, the performing arts institutions received just over R97,7 million. The combined budget for the declared cultural institutions was over R237 million. The NAC received an increased budget of R47,9 million in 2005/06. The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) received R26,2 million and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) R24,6 million. The National Heritage Council (NHC) received R17,4 million and the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) R24,298 million. Editorial Women’s History and Subjectivity: Reflection on Liberation Narratives Gabi Mkhize Kalpana Hiralal Stereotypes Embedded in a Single Story: His Story Patriarchy the system (Johnson 2005), has long confined women in a subordinate space in social, political and economic institutions. This system privileges men and ‘the masculine’ in most world societies, including those of Africa. Men, ‘the masculine’, often have more power than women and ‘the feminine’, including other minority genders (such as LGBT+). Colonialism and apartheid (in South Africa) extended patriarchal powers and structures with white men on top of the power pyramid and black women at the bottom (in terms of gender roles and status). It is undeniable that black men especially suffered under colonial and apartheid patriarchal hierarchies of power. Both men and women were denied freedom; however, to some extent, men’s stories were told and women’s stories untold. There was a single story. Thus, black women were more invisible than black men. The aim of the apartheid system was to divide and conquer which was strategically done, and it planted divisions, destruction and distortions among many families. There are multiple stories of how black men fought back and brought down the apartheid regime, and multiple stories of how men were tortured and brutally murdered for all South Africans to be free. However, women were left with a single story of how they were left behind in the home while men were out fighting. Women’s most popular story is that of the pass law campaign -
