UM CELEBRATES HOMECOMING OCT. 6-8
MISSOULA -
"A River Runs Through It" will be the theme Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 6-8, when
The University of Montana - Missoula celebrates Homecoming with three days of festivities including a Saturday benefit concert reuniting Montana’s famed Mission Mountain Wood Band.
Other highlights will include Friday’s performance by the Ririe-Woodbury Modem Dance
Company, a String Orchestra of the Rockies concert Saturday night, the traditional Saturday morning parade through dowmtown Missoula, Thursday’s Singing on the Steps ot Main Hall, an art fair, a football game, and varied exhibits, open houses and alumni reunions.
Singing on the Steps will feature the dedication of the John C. Ellis Carillon Tower in Main
Hall, honoring the longtime UM carillonneur and music professor who died in 1992 at the age ot
48. It was largely through the efforts of Ellis that the carillon was rebuilt and made playable again in 1977; he gave a short concert almost every weekday at noon.
Also during SOS, the University will dedicate the more than 200 names of UM scholars inscribed on bricks in the Oscar J. Craig Circle of Scholars in front of Main Hall.
The Mission Mountain Wood Band concert will reunite original band members Rob Quist,
Christian Johnson, Steve Riddle and Greg Reichenberg. Bruce Robinson will stand in tor his brother, Terry Robinson, who was killed in a 1987 plane crash. The band, all native Montanans, was famed for its showmanship, vocal harmonies and bluegrass/country-rock with a Montana flavor. The concert, with opening humor by Mark Staples of Butte, will benefit UM’s Alumni

Thursday, Oct 6
10 a.m.-6 p.m. -- Art fair, University Center Mall.
Noon-5 p.m. -- "Flying Fish and Kicking Mules," exhibit on the history of fly fishing and packing in with mules, Historical Museum at Fort Missoula.
7 p.m. -- Carillon concert by music visiting instructor Nancy Cooper, the Oval.
7:30 p.m. -- Singing on The Steps, featuring presentation of 1993 Distinguished Alumni
Awards, announcement of the Homecoming king and queen, and dedications of the John C. Ellis
Carillon Tower and names in the Oscar J. Craig Circle of Scholars. Music by the Chamber
Chorale.
8:15 p.m. - Lighting of the M on Mount Sentinel.
8:15 p.m. -- Reception in honor of DAA recipients and royalty, under tents on the Oval.
Friday, Oct 7
10 a.m.-6 p.m. — Art fair, University Center Mall.
Noon-5 p.m. — "Flying Fish and Kicking Mules" display, Historical Museum at Fort
Missoula.
1-5 p.m. -- ROTC Open House, Schreiber Gym.

11:30 a.m. -- Homecoming tailgate parties, north of Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Noon-5 p.m. - "Flying Fish and Kicking Mules" display, Historical Museum at Fort
Missoula.
1:30 p.m. - Kickoff, Grizzlies vs. Northern Arizona football, Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
4:30 p.m. -- Post-game celebration, Holiday Inn.
4:30 p.m. - Post-game open houses at sorority and fraternity houses.
8 p.m. - String Orchestra of the Rockies concert, Music Recital Hall. Tickets $10 general,
$7 students and seniors; available through Tic-It-EZ outlets or by calling (800) 526-3400.
9 p.m. — Mission Mountain Wood Band Reunion Concert, UC Ballroom. Tickets are
