Vedanta Magazine 1938 VEDANTA — 1938 1 Publisher's Note We are pleased to share with you this reprint of the second of two volumes of VEDANTA, the quarterly journal published by Swami Yatiswarananda from Switzerland in 1937 and 1938—before his departure for Sweden and thence to America, following the hostilities that broke out in 1939 Europe. The reader will find excerpts from the Swami's class-talks to Eu- ropean spiritual aspirants, since his arrival at Wiesbaden in 1933, as well as a superb selection of inspiring compilations and quotes from the great spiritual traditions, which bear witness to the reality and universality of spiritual experience, and the world-wideness of the methods that lead to revelation of the Reality — Personal and Impersonal — through absorption of the ego into its source. The material was scanned from the cyclostyled A4 originals, kindly shared with us by Kurt Friedrichs of Hamburg, a disciple of the Swami. If we see keenly the origin of panchmahabhoot they have been derived from panchtanmatrasie subtle mahabhootas which in turn are are derivatives of preceding elements as Rajas and Tamas and so on till Avyakt. Whenever we speak about health and diseases relative to Dosh , Dhatu ,Malassamyavastha and vishamavastha indirectly it is concerned to the panchmahabhootas status only.     SRI RAMAKRISHNA AND GOD-CONSCIOUSNESS By Swami Paratparananda * Editorial of The Vedanta Kesari Magazine – February 1963; Vol. 49; page 403 This is an age of science when people doubt the very veracity of the existence of God. Though advanced scientists are not so dogmatic in their views now, most people think that matter is quite sufficient for the existence of the universe. Science provides them with their requirements of trade, transport, luxury and other things. By researches in the hygienic field science has been able to extend the lease of man’s life. A long and happy life is what most people desire, and for that they have the science and its methods. Where then is there the necessity for a God, whom none can see even by travelling in the space capsules? He is not visible to our eyes, nor perceived by our senses; how then can a sense-bound man believe in Him? So he denies Him outright. Some others do not go so far, they think, ‘Let Him be if He exists; He can neither do good nor evil to us, so we have no necessity of Him. We need not bother about Him.’ Still others oscillate between belief and unbelief. They sometimes are very hopeful and certain that He is; and that is when everything goes on in their favour, to their liking, but at other times when they are thwarted in their desires, their belief snaps like a worn out string. Most of the believers are of this latter type. It is not bad either.

The Years After Swami Prabhavananda’s Passing (1976-1984) wami Prabhavananda brought the initial, brilliant phase of literary work at the Vedanta Society of Southern California S (VSSC) to a close with his English translation of and commentary on Narada’s Way of Divine Love: The Bhakti Sutras of Narada published by Vedanta Press in 1971. The period after Prabhavananda’s passing in 1976 was, of course, one of change and readjustment for the members of the VSSC, but its literary efforts continued. Christopher Isherwood was the only remaining widely known professional writer affiliating himself with the Vedanta Movement in Southern California, but new sources of intellectual and cultural creativity came from within the movement itself. A unique aspect of the Vedanta Society is that it offers its members an opportunity to become creatively involved, in sharp contrast to a more traditional church in which a member’s chief function is to attend a weekly religious talk. The Vedanta Society became, in effect, a “people’s organization” in which a large percentage of the members themselves would use their talents for the betterment of the Society. Members of the monastic and lay congregation became actively involved in the writing of books, publication of articles, composition of hour-long musicals, production of art, and all aspects of religious plays.

Swami Vivekananda’s concern for the mmagazine is seen in his letters to Alasinga Perumal whwheree he writes: ‘Now I am bent upon starting the journal.’ ‘Herewith I send a hundred dollars…. Hope this will go just a little in starting your The Vedanta Kesari The Vedanta paper.’ ‘I am determined to see the paper succeed.’ ‘The Song of the Sannyasin is my first contribution for your journal.’ ‘I learnt from your letter the bad financial state that Brahmavadin is in.’ ‘It must be supported by the Hindus if they have any sense of virtue or gratitude left in them.’ ‘I pledge myself to maintain the paper anyhow.’ ‘The Brahmavadin is a jewel—it must not perish. Of course, such a paper has to be kept up by private help always, and we will do it.’ For the last 105 years, without missing a single issue, the magazine has been carrying the invigorating message of Vedanta with articles on spirituality, culture, philosophy, youth, personality development, science, holistic living, family and corporate values.

    EDUCATION New Dimensions PUBLISHERS' NOTE Swami Vivekananda declares that education is the panacea for all our evils. According to him `man-making' or `character-building' education alone is real education. Keeping this end in view, the centres of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission have been running a number of institutions solely or partly devoted to education. The Ramakrishna Math of Bangalore (known earlier as Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama) started the `Sri Ramakrishna Vidyarthi Mandiram' in 1943, as a hostel for college boys wherein the inculcating of moral and spiritual values in the minds of the inmates was given the primary importance. The hostel became popular very soon and the former inmates who are now occupying important places in public life, still remember their life at the hostel. In 1958, the Vidyarthi Mandiram was shifted to its own newly built, spacious and well- designed, premises. In 1983, the Silver Jubilee celebrations were held in commemoration of this event. During that period a Souvenir entitled ``Education: New Dimensions'' was brought out. Very soon, the copies were exhausted. However, the demand for the same, since it contained many original and thought-provoking articles, went on increasing. We are now bringing it out as a book with some modifications. Except the one article of Albert Einstein which has been taken from an old journal, all the others are by eminent monks of the Ramakrishna Order who have contributed to the field of education, in some way or the other. We earnestly hope that all those interested in the education of our younger generation, especially those in the teaching profession, will welcome this publication and give wide publicity to the ideas contained in it.

In 2000 A.D. he had invited me to San Francisco to attend the Centenary Celebrations of the San Francisco centre. He took me also to Olema and other retreats on the occasion. Once he came just on a visit to meet the old Swami at the Belur Math. In sum, Swami Prabuddhanandaji was an asset to our Order, and his leaving us is a great loss.

    PILGRIMAGE AS A MEANS TO SPIRITUAL AWAKENING By Swami Paratparananda Editorial of The Vedanta Kesari Magazine – August 1964; Vol. 51; page 242 SPIRITUAL LIFE has a sort of mystery surrounding it. Man does not know by what act of his the inner awakening will come, by what means the doors of his vision will open, what shall illuminate his path. For it has come in several ways to different persons. Gautama’s renunciation was due to the sight of misery, disease and death; and in striving to find a way out of these tribulations and sufferings he became the Buddha. In the life of Tulsidas it was the admonition of his wife that brought out the transformation. Young Tulsidas loved his wife extremely. He could not part from her even for a day. One day, however, he had to go on some work, far away from home. On returning at night he found that she had been1 taken to her father’s. Tulsidas set out immediately and reached there late in the night. The wife was vexed; and ashamed of being railed at by people mildly reproached him, ‘Ah! what attachment you have for these bones and flesh. If only you had half this love for God you would have realized Him.’ That was enough. A flood of light, as it were, fell upon him. That very moment he left his home and hearth. Sri Chaitanya’s pilgrimage to Vrindavan brought him in contact with Ìswar Puri and that set the chain of events ending in his complete renunciation of the world and the propagation of the Bhakti cult throughout India.
