ב״ה An inspiring story for your Shabbos table שבת פרשת צו, י״ג אדר ב׳, תשע״ד HERE’S Shabbos Parshas Tzav, March 15, 2014 my MY CAREER STORY IN THE MILITARY COLONEL JACOB GOLDSTEIN y parents are Holocaust survivors from Warsaw, where my father was educated in the Chabad Myeshiva , Tomchei Temimim. I was born right after the war, in 1946, in a displaced person’s camp where my parents were awaiting papers for America. When I was 11 years old, I came to study at the Chabad yeshiva in Crown Heights. I stayed there for many years, and this is where I eventually received my rabbinic ordination. In 1967, just before the Six Day War, the Rebbe began the first of his mitzvah campaigns to reach out to secular Jews. Some of the yeshiva students were designated to reach out to Jewish soldiers, to ask them to put on tefillin . We went to Camp Smith in Peekskill, where the New York Army National Guard is based. This was during the Vietnam War and a lot of Jewish boys joined the National In 1983, during the United States-led invasion of Guard because, even though you had to sign up for six Grenada, I was deployed there. On the fifth night of years, you wouldn’t get shipped out overseas. Chanukah, I was aboard a military plane when suddenly On that occasion, I first met the chaplain of the National the pilot motioned to me to put on the headset because Guard, Ed Donovan, a Roman Catholic priest, and from I had a call.

BAZYLER* AND SETH M. GERBER** Part and parcel of every genocide is looting and theft, including the plunder of cultural property of the particular group that was the victim of the genocide. Until the last century, such cultural plunder was considered a commonplace byproduct of war, with so-called "war booty" regarded, in the aftermath of a genocide or other massive atrocity, as property now rightfully belonging to the plunderer.1 The aftermath of the Nazis' unprecedented theft of Jewish assets2 and the assets of the conquered states during World War II changed this outlook.

  • My Plastic Pharoah by Tzvi Freeman So Here I Am, Scrubbing out the Crumbs from My Ergonomic Keyboard, Faxing in My Deed of Chametz Sale and Downloading a New Haggadah
The World of Lubavitch A publication of Chabad-Lubavitch, Toronto APRIL 2017 Vol. 43 No. 1 (147) NISSAN 5777 My Plastic Pharoah By Tzvi Freeman So here I am, scrubbing out the crumbs from my ergonomic keyboard, faxing in my Deed of Chametz Sale and downloading a new Haggadah. In other words, its almost Passover already. I’ll soon be sitting at the Seder table with family and friends and the same question as with every one of these holidays is going to come up: What are we celebrating? What are we all here for? My kids tell me that’s no question: We’re here to celebrate our freedom. That’s what the holiday is called, “The Festival of Our Freedom.” We were slaves in Egypt, now we are free. So let’s get to the meal and celebrate. I’m glad they feel so free. As for me, I’m still a slave and Pharaoh, king of Egypt, never died. I labor for him all week long. He tricked me into it: First, he let me have all these nice things I really wanted for nothing. Later he started demanding money for them. When, one time, I didn’t pay all the money, he demanded even more money. So I have to keep working real hard to give him all the money he demands. I carry a picture of Pharaoh in his present incarnation in my wallet. It has his very intimidating new name engraved on it. He’s called “Master Card.” But my kids don’t go for that.

  • The Chabad Lubavitch Movement: Filling the Jewish Vacuum Worldwide
www.jcpa.org No. 3 15 December 2005 / 14 Cheshvan 5766 The Chabad Lubavitch Movement: Filling the Jewish Vacuum Worldwide An Interview with Samuel Heilman The influence of the Chabad Lubavitch movement in the Jewish world has greatly increased over the past decades. The seventh Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994), who died without a successor - and is considered by part of the Chabad Hasidim as the Messiah - was in the 1950s at the origins of the present international outreach campaign. The willingness of a substantial number of Chabad Hasidim to travel and live in places with few or no other Orthodox Jews has been a decisive factor in the movement's success. Chabad has brought Hasidism and Orthodox Jewish practice into the public square and also into the mainstream consciousness of world Jewry. Chabad zeroes in on crucial areas in the life cycle, including childcare centers, nursery schools, and college campuses, as well as public practice of Judaism, particularly Chanukah candle-lighting but also Sabbath candle-lighting for women and the donning of tefillin (phylacteries) by adult men. Chabad's messianic approach has come under severe criticism. Yet as more established groups of Orthodoxy feel insecure and do not have adherents willing to dedicate their lives to missionary activity, they are reluctant to alienate Chabad on which they may depend in certain locations and situations. An Increasing Influence The influence of the Chabad Lubavitch movement in the Jewish world has greatly increased over the past decades. Samuel Heilman, Harold Proshansky Chair in Jewish Studies at the Graduate Center and Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Queens College of the City University of New York, says that the willingness of a substantial number of Chabad Hasidim to travel and live in places with few or no other Orthodox Jews has been the decisive factor in the movement's success.
