3D Virtual World Users

According to Maria Korolov, editor and publisher of Hypergrid Business (an online magazine), Virtual worlds gained 214 million new users in the second quarter of 2011 bringing the overall participation to approximately 600 million users. And these users spend an average of 10 hours per week within these virtual world environments. http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2011/07/virtual-world-usage-accelerates/

3D Virtual World Users

Earlier we discussed how the virtual worlds align with the social networking trends in society today. A study conducted by pingdom.com examined 19 social networking sites to determine some basic user demographics. They reported that were 84% more female than male users for 16 out of the 19 social networking sites studied. In fact, the average ratio of all 19 sites studied was 47% male, 53% female. http://royal.pingdom.com/2009/11/27/study-males-vs-females-in-social-networks/

3D Virtual World Users

That same pingdom.com study revealed that these users are global and are not limited to any specific industry or professional discipline. Social networking users can be found in colleges, churches, governments, corporations, non-profits and entrepreneurial establishments. Since social networking is a key attribute of 3D virtual worlds, this data is valuable to predict future usability.

3D Virtual World Users Exercise

Activity Instructions Select the age group that you think might be the primary users of immersive virtual worlds.

Which group did you select?

 10-15  16-20  21-27  28-34  35-44  45+

Why did you select that age group?

What was the most popular age group selected during the exercise?

 10-15  16-20  21-27  28-34  35-44  45+

The eLearning - 3D Virtual World Connection

Who are those users? We have to pay attention to the average age of adult virtual world users and the average age range for any type of social networking to help identify the target audience.

Case Study

The VP of Training wants to take organizational learning to the next level. He heard about some of the things we discussed in this session and would like to see 3D virtual environment incorporated in the middle management training scheduled two months from now. While this may sound simple, you realize that several things must happen in order to properly implement your Vice President’s request. You must:

 Identify the appropriate platform for your organization based on technological compatibility and cost.  Develop and conduct a train-the-trainer for your team to effectively facilitate learning in a 3D virtual environment.  Develop and incorporate an orientation to help learners transition to a new platform prior to the actual training.  Anything else? Write it here and in chat pod:

Case Study Activity 1: The T3

Activity Instructions: Select your preferred T3 approach.

Which option did you select?

 Have the trainer create a learning space in the virtual world on his or her own.  Have the trainer document the steps to create a space in the virtual world.  Create a how-to video for learners on how to implement content in the environment.  None, made my own suggestion:

Case Study Activity 2: The Training

Activity Instructions: Read through the objectives for the training where the 3D virtual learning environment will be incorporated.

Middle Managers Training Objectives

• Develop and implement actionable plans to align your team with the company goals.

• Align staff expertise and strengths to achieve goals.

• Increase the skill levels of each person by providing resources and learning opportunities.

• Manage staff performance through consistent communication and feedback.

• Promote group synergy through strategic team interaction and project assignments.

• Manage conflict by identifying, working through and resolving the core problem.

Case Study Activity 3: Going 3D

Activity Instructions: Respond to the question below:

Which objective in this curriculum would benefit the students the most if it were implemented in a 3D virtual world environment?

 Develop and implement actionable plans to align your team with the company goals.  Align staff expertise and strengths to achieve goals.  Increase the skill levels of each person by providing resources and learning opportunities.  Manage staff performance through consistent communication and feedback.  Promote group synergy through strategic team interaction and project assignments.  Manage conflict by identifying, working through and resolving the core problem.
