Thank you for investing time and resources into yourself and the profession of music therapy this weekend. Because of our dedicated conference team and our unique venue, there are a myriad of opportunities for professional growth, service and education. Reach out to a new face, learn about the association’s mission, meet published researchers and association volunteers. Please join us during Opening Session on Thursday as we recognize our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients and again on Friday during the AMTA Business meeting when we recognize colleagues and advocates during the AMTA Awards Ceremony. Additional highlights of this conference include panels on cultural competence, the many opportunities to engage in music‑making, and the many working groups and committees that dedicate their time to working for our profession. Information Subject to Change page 5 Lifetime Achievement Awards Remo Belli emo was a champion and devoted friend to the music therapy community for more than Rtwo decades. Best known for founding Remo, Inc., the largest drum manufacturer in the world, and inventing the Mylar drum head, Remo truly was a Renaissance man. Having traveled the world since his days in the Navy during WWII, Remo spoke at least half a dozen languages. Over the past 25 years, Remo collaborated with numerous music therapists to develop products and programs to meet the varied needs of people with disabilities and become a mentor to many AMTA members. Remo’s focus on wellness and health influenced ideas about music therapy’s contributions in those areas. A passionate believer in the health and educational benefits of drumming, Remo partnered with musical organizations, educational institutions, and health-care advocates across the nation. In addition to supporting AMTA and music therapy, he worked closely with the International Association for Jazz Education, The Grammy Foundation, National Association for Music Education, Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International, Bands of America, and Youth Education in the Arts. In 1963, he was a founding member of the Percussive Arts Society. Remo’s curiosity and interest in music therapy never waned. He continued to attend music therapy conferences, to visit and support music therapy programs in the U.S. and around the world, to request updates on the progress

Consequently, culture has been regarded as a significant construct among researchers. By proposing Culture-Centered Music Therapy, Stige (2002) encourages “all music therapists [to be] more culture-centered in their work and thinking, not by labeling their work as such but integrating cultural perspectives in their thinking” (p. 5). As our own worldviews influence all aspects of music therapy (Dileo, 2000; Wheeler & Baker, 2010), cultural factors provide a significant foundation to all music therapy research. With this perspective, music therapy researchers are essentially multicultural researchers.

Lawrence Witzleben Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, Chair. This thesis examines current developments in the research and discourse on music and healing. Ethnomusicology has involved extensive work on documenting traditional music and healing traditions; however, ethnomusicologists have neglected to contribute their knowledge and effort to healthcare-oriented research. Music therapy, on the other hand, has been focusing on the benefit of the patient, but rarely relates its practices to traditional music and healing traditions or non-Western music. Despite the recent establishment of the Medical Ethnomusicology Special Interest Group in the Society for Ethnomusicology and increasing awareness of world music and cultural diversity in music therapy, scholars in the two fields have not yet collaborated with each other extensively. The motivations for this thesis are: to review previous developments in research on music and healing, to find out the reasons for the changes in the research trends of the past decade, and to see possible research directions in the future.
