  • Minding the Body Interacting Socially Through Embodied Action
Linköping Studies in Science and Technology Dissertation No. 1112 Minding the Body Interacting socially through embodied action by Jessica Lindblom Department of Computer and Information Science Linköpings universitet SE-581 83 Linköping, Sweden Linköping 2007 © Jessica Lindblom 2007 Cover designed by Christine Olsson ISBN 978-91-85831-48-7 ISSN 0345-7524 Printed by UniTryck, Linköping 2007 Abstract This dissertation clarifies the role and relevance of the body in social interaction and cognition from an embodied cognitive science perspective. Theories of embodied cognition have during the past two decades offered a radical shift in explanations of the human mind, from traditional computationalism which considers cognition in terms of internal symbolic representations and computational processes, to emphasizing the way cognition is shaped by the body and its sensorimotor interaction with the surrounding social and material world. This thesis develops a framework for the embodied nature of social interaction and cognition, which is based on an interdisciplinary approach that ranges historically in time and across different disciplines. It includes work in cognitive science, artificial intelligence, phenomenology, ethology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, social psychology, linguistics, communication, and gesture studies. The theoretical framework presents a thorough and integrated understanding that supports and explains the embodied nature of social interaction and cognition. It is argued that embodiment is the part and parcel of social interaction and cognition in the most general and specific ways, in which dynamically embodied actions themselves have meaning and agency. The framework is illustrated by empirical work that provides some detailed observational fieldwork on embodied actions captured in three different episodes of spontaneous social interaction in situ.

MONDAY, MAY 24, 2021 BREEDING & SELLING THE TRAINER LIZ MERRYMAN HAS HIGH HOPES FOR HOMEBRED FILLY by Katie Ritz MILLION-DOLLAR RACEHORSE It=s a rare feat to get to the winner=s circle on one of the THAT DOESN'T EXIST biggest weekends in racing with a horse bred, owned and trained by the same connection, but Elizabeth Merryman did just that when her speedy filly Caravel (Mizzen Mast) gave a gutsy performance at Pimlico to take The Very One S. by a nose on Preakness weekend. Many would consider the juggling act between the foaling barn and the training center to be an impossibility, but Liz Merryman says, for her, it=s the best way to produce a racehorse. AI love working with a horse that has no mystery to what happened before I got them,@ she said. AYou know everything about them, you know why they do what they do and it=s really rewarding. It=s my favorite way to train a horse.@ Did last Friday=s victory mark Caravel as the most successful homebred Merryman has brought up? ADefinitely,@ the Fair Hill-based trainer said. MONDAY, MAY 3, 2021 MEDINA SPIRIT FINE AFTER DERBY WIN HOW TO BUY A DERBY Zedan Racing's Medina Spirit (Protonico) exited his win in WINNER FOR $1,000 Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby in fine shape, according to trainer Bob Baffert, who said he would wait a week before committing the colt to the May 15 GI Preakness S. AHe came out of it well,@ Baffert said Sunday morning. AIt takes about a week to determine, so I=m going to come back next weekend and see. But I don=t see anything discouraging right now.@ Baffert continued, ACan he win the Triple Crown? I don=t know. But he=s the Derby winner, and that=s all that matters. I was coming in here, thinking, I wasn=t sure [if Medina Spirit could win the Derby], everything had to go perfect for him. We were going to go to the lead, and see what happened. • The Relationship Between the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THE AMERICAS AND THE HORSE: DECONSTRUCTING A EUROCENTRIC MYTH By Yvette Running Horse Collin A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Indigenous Studies University of Alaska Fairbanks May 2017 © 2017 Yvette Running Horse Collin APPROVED: Raymond Barnhardt, Ph.D., Committee Chair Beth Ginondidoy Leonard, Ph.D., Committee Co-Chair Theresa Arevgaq John, Ph.D., Committee Member Marco A. Oviedo, Ph.D., Committee Member Michael Koskey, Ph.D., Department Chair Todd Sherman, M.F.A., Dean, College of Liberal Arts Michael Castellini, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School Abstract This research project seeks to deconstruct the history of the horse in the Americas and its relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of these same lands. Although Western academia admits that the horse originated in the Americas, it claims that the horse became extinct in these continents during the Last Glacial Maximum (between roughly 13,000 and 11,000 years ago). This version of “history” credits Spanish conquistadors and other early European explorers with reintroducing the horse to the Americas and to her Indigenous Peoples. However, many Native Nations state that “they always had the horse” and that they had well established horse cultures long before the arrival of the Spanish. To date, “history” has been written by Western academia to reflect a Eurocentric and colonial paradigm. The traditional knowledge (TK) of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, and any information that is contrary to the accepted Western academic view, has been generally disregarded, purposefully excluded, or reconfigured to fit the accepted academic paradigm.

FRIDAY, 1 JUNE 2018 MAGICS BOOK ONE CLOSES ON PAR KANTOR SAVOURING Book 1 of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale came to RASCAL=S DERBY BID a close on Thursday evening on the Gold Coast, and it certainly ended on a high, with the final lot through the ring, the supplementary entry Courgette (Aus) (Charge Forward {Aus}) (lot 1670), attracting a final bid of A$2.1 million from Tony Bott of E Thoroughbreds. That sum was good enough to top the session, and was the second-highest price of a blockbuster week of trade. The 10-year-old Courgette has little to fault her on paper. Her first foal was last year=s G1 Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}), and she was sold in foal to rising star sire I Am Invincible (Aus)Bin fact, three of the 10 top-priced mares on Thursday were in foal to him, and his Book 1 average for six in-foal mares sold was A$937,500Btops among all sires.
