Statement of Philosophy MORAVIAN ACADEMY SEEKS TO FULFILL ITS MISSION BY PURSUING THESE GOALS • Provide a strong academic foundation in preparation for college work. • Help students develop self-respect, dignity, and a concern and respect for others. • Promote creativity and an appreciation of aesthetic values. • Help students to develop their physical skills and encourage positive attitudes about health and fitness. • Engage students in experiences that will develop maturity, independence, adaptability, integrity, and love of learning. • Help students to become aware of the spiritual dimension of life and further their understanding of the Judeo-Christian tradition. • Encourage students and their parents to recognize their responsibilities in the educational process and demonstrate their commitment to the purposes and goals of Moravian Academy. MISSION STATEMENT Moravian Academy is a church-related school whose Moravian tradition affirms that young people best realize their potential in an atmosphere of love and understanding. We seek to promote the child’s full development in mind, body and spirit. Since 1742 our tradition has encouraged sound innovations to meet contemporary challenges while recognizing the permanence of basic human values. Report of Giving 1 DEAR MORAVIAN ACADEMY COMMUNITY, As our mission states, since 1742 Moravian Academy has encouraged sound innovations to meet contemporary challenges. Just over a year ago, Moravian Academy committed to a journey which directly responds to the foundational words from that mission. Committed to an exceptional student experience, a A CULTURE of CURIOSITY, exists within every fiber of this school. In hopes that it will one day be threadbare because of its overuse, we do expect that the progress made this year will grow exponentially as students awaken their curiosities, strengthen perseverance, develop empathy and question and explore their truths within. Moravian’s future is bright. Our year-old strategic vision turns into action every day in classrooms, on sports fields, in labs, on field trips, and in partnership with alumni, Moravian families and communities local and abroad. Constant reflection has led us to the next steps in our school’s educational journey. Leaning into best practices and our Mission Skills, students are enjoying redesigned homerooms and advisories with additional attention to cultural competencies. Attending to Personal Learning, students are becoming agents of their learning, finding passions, and engaging in deeper learning through research, reading, and reflection. Collaboration is expected at every juncture. As a result, meaningful classwork, mentorships, and partnerships across cultural and geographic differences are being nurtured and strengthened by teachers and community members with care. Finally, Sustaining Connections is global and local. Our commitment to connecting current students with the larger Moravian Academy community gives all parties a sense of belonging in a relevant, thriving world. Renovations offer new opportunities too. Reimagining the Schoolhouse downtown is just one example of how our signature programs in music and art, combined with a curiosity-fueled library will bring about excitement for learning in a cutting edge environment. Your financial support to tremendous programs is critical. So, this Report of Giving is much more than a numbers report. It is profound proof that our strong and committed community of alumni, parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, friends, administration and students are at the heart of Moravian’s success. Your contributions have allowed our strategic vision to become a reality and for this we are grateful. Sincerely, Jeffrey Zemsky Head of School 2 Report of Giving Giving in 2018-2019 GIVING 2018 • 2019 UNRESTRICTED (Annual Fund) $408,598 RESTRICTED (Endowment, Restricted, EITC/OSTC, Campaigns) $526,441 RESTRICTED (Events) $154,517 TOTAL $1,089,556 REVENUE Other Revenues - 3.6% Restricted Giving – 2.0% Annual Giving and Fundraising – 3.0% Services and Summer Programs - 5.5% Tuition and Fees - 85.9% DONORS WHO HAVE GIVEN $500 OR MORE 275 TOTAL # OF DONORS EXPENSES 1,205 Administrative - 5.2% TOTAL # OF GIFTS Repairs, Maintenance, and Occupancy – 9.4% Services and Summer Programs - 4.9% 2,327 Education Expenses - 5.3% Financial Assistance - 14.4% Salaries and Benefits – 60.9% Report of Giving 3 Distinguished Donors Over the years, a number of alumni, parents, and friends have given most generously to Moravian Academy during their lifetimes and, in some cases, through a bequest or by starting a named endowment.
