Parks Moravian church, a Protestant denomination that originated in what is today the Czech Sanctuary Choir Republic. These stars were traditionally made in Moravian boarding schools in the 19th century, likely as part of a geometry lesson. The star reminds us of the star that guided the Magi to find Gospel Reading Luke 2:1-12 (The Message) Dale Chandler the Christ child. The star also symbolizes the Christ Child himself of whom Scripture prophesied, “A star shall come out of Jacob,” (Numbers 24:17). The Word of God for the People of God. The service can be heard through the hallway speakers. Nursery care is available in room 102 for children ages 4 and younger. Children’s Bulletins are available at the sanctuary entrances. Worship Bags are available in front of the first pew on each side of the sanctuary. Please take a bag at the beginning of the service and return it to the hook at the end of the service. Children’s Sermon takes place after the Doxology. Children of all ages are invited to gather at the front of the sanctuary. Following the children’s sermon, children ages 4 - 2nd grade may be dismissed to Children’s Chapel. I bring you good news of great joy. Children’s Chapel meets in room 215. It brings life and flourishing everywhere it travels. Take it away, and the world would eventually be enshrouded in death. Each year as fall turns into winter and the days get progressively shorter, many of us begin to experience the toll that darkness takes upon us. Our mood sinks and we can find it harder to go about the daily tasks of life. We begin to long for the return of the healing light of the sun. Certain types of artificial light try to mimic what the sun can do, but they are, in the end, cheap and garish substitutes for the real thing. The biblical narrative tells a story of a world that was enveloped in darkness―a darkness of sin, prideful autonomy, and foolish efforts to create our own light. And, into this great darkness, God―the true Light―has come. Jesus is the Light that has come into our darkness. His light is full, complex and rich.

Advent is a time that invites us to prepare ourselves for the beauty and the mystery of the Christmas season. There is deep and ancient wisdom to intentionally marking these days of waning light that lead to Christ’s birth. As the days grow ever shorter, our lives draw ever more inward. As the earth grows colder, we surround ourselves with those things that bring warmth and comfort. When the Christ child arrives, he does not show up as a full-grown, adult king. Jesus arrives as a fragile, helpless, newborn baby. Christmas reminds of this very fact—that even the God of the Universe arrives amongst us seeking relationship, care, and community. When Jesus arrives on Christmas in what we Christians call the incarnation—the birth of God amongst us—it is not with ​ ​ a triumphal shout, but a hopeful whisper. It’s a whisper worth listening for.

    “Wishing on a Star” Epiphany of Our Lord Saturday and Sunday, January 6 and 7, 2018 All Services Sister Marianne Brock Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Camp Hill, Pennsylvania Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:1-12; Matthew 2:1-12 You may or may not know that Pastor John Brock and I have what some might consider an unusually strong affinity for Walt Disney, the man, and Walt Disney World, the resort, so when I was sent the theme chosen for this week’s sermon, I had to blink back the Pixie Dust in my eyes. I even watched Pinocchio, from which we get the song “When You Wish Upon A Star. It was darker than I remembered, with lots of drinking and smoking and liberal use of the word “stupid.” I’m not sure it’s entirely appropriate for today’s young children … and it certainly wasn’t helpful in my sermon preparation. But on Monday evening, around 6:30, John and I were in our kitchen preparing our traditional New Year’s Day meal… and by “preparing,” I mean we were studying the Chinese take-out menu. Our dogs alerted us to something incredibly alarming: there was someone at our front door, and it was probably bad guys! (Our dogs are very concerned about bad guys.) No one uses our front door, not even us, but sure enough, there was a gentleman standing on our porch, and he was knocking on our door. He didn’t look like a bad guy, so I pulled the dog beds away from the door and unlocked it with the ancient skeleton key that came with it when it was installed 80 years ago.

As Pepita walked to the chapel, sadly, her cousin Pedro tried to cheer her up. 'Pepita', he said "I'm sure that even the smallest gift, given by someone who loves him will make Jesus happy." Pepita didn't know what she could give, so she picked a small handful of weeds from the roadside and made them into a a small bouquet. She felt embarrassed because she could only give this small present to Jesus. As she walked through the chapel to the altar, she remembered what Pedro had said.
