Of course, that was the aim of his magisterial scholarly work, and while unquestionably impressive, his tome turned out to be by no means the last word on the topic. Indeed over the intervening quarter century, quite to the contrary, we witnessed a continuously increasing outpouring of specialized political science, historical, philosophical, psychological, and other disciplinary studies with clearly ―no school of leadership‖with a single unifying theory emerging.

  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

Acclaimed British director Terence Davies (House of Mirth, The Deep Blue Sea) exquisitely evokes Dickinson’s deep attachment to her close-knit family along with the manners, mores and spiritual convictions of her time that she struggled with and transcended in her poetry. LOGLINE Cynthia Nixon personifies the wit, intellectual independence, and pathos of 19th Century American poet Emily Dickinson in this masterful biographical drama from acclaimed director Terence Davies (House of Mirth).

“I AM A MONSTER, JUST LIKE SHE SAID”: MONSTROUS LESBIANS IN CONTEMPORARY GOTHIC FILM by Michelle Denise Wise A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Ph.D. in English Middle Tennessee State University August 2016 Dissertation Committee: Dr. David Lavery, Chair Dr. Linda Badley Dr. William Brantley First, I would like to dedicate this dissertation to my wife Callie M. Wise who stayed up way past our bedtime to watch and re-watch the films mentioned in this study, discuss ideas with me, and who offered her endless support. With each new draft, she challenged me to think and re-think my positions. Without her continued support, this dissertation probably would have never been finished. Next, I dedicate it to our daughter Gabrielle, whose entry into this world came before I started writing the dissertation. However, she was and always will be my guiding light. Finally, I would like to dedicate this project to my parents, Charles and Helen Wise. Even though they don’t understand the world of academia, they continued to offer their support. My mother was unable to see the finished product but I know she would be proud. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my director, Dr. David Lavery, for his continued support of this project. If I had not taken his Introduction to Film Studies class several semesters ago, this project would not have been possible. It was in his class that I realized that I had been a film lover all my life and it was time I came out of the “film closet.” I would like to thank my other readers, Dr.

In contrast to many other studies in this field, such productions are understood as both adaptations and „costume dramas‟, whilst the often neglected televisual context is highlighted alongside the paratexts which shape and surround adaptations. At the same time, the enduring (yet often dismissed) notion of „fidelity‟ is recognised and developed, as expectations of faithfulness extend beyond the literary text to privilege the legacies of prior adaptations.
