Caral a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Day 1 • Lima • Barranca • Sacred City of Caral-Supe (L) Pickup from a hotel in Lima or from the Jorge Chavez Airport by your English-speaking driver-guide. Private escorted tour to explore the wonders of pre-Colombian Peru. After exiting the city, we drive along the Pacific coast towards Barranca town. After a tasty seafood lunch, we drive towards the ancient city of Caral a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 5000-year-old 626-hectare archaeological site of The Sacred City of Caral-Supe. It dates back to the Late Archaic Period of the Central Andes and is the oldest center of civilization in the Americas. Exceptionally well preserved, the site is impressive in terms of its design and the complexity of its architectural, especially its monumental stone and earthen platform mounts and sunken circular courts. One of 18 urban settlements situated in the same area, Caral features complex and monumental architecture, including six large pyramidal structures. A Quipu (the knot system used in Andean civilizations to record information) found on the site testifies to the development and complexity of Caral society. The city’s plan and some of its components, including pyramidal structures and residence of the elite, show clear evidence of ceremonial functions, signifying a powerful religious ideology. Day 2 • Caral • Chavin de Guantar • Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range • Huaraz (B/L) 06:30 early departure to Chavin de Guantar (4 hours). We drive on breathtaking mountain roads to the archaeological center for 4-hours. Inside the sanctuary we visit galleries, Lanzon de Chavin that is a big stone with 4.53 meters, Cabeza Clava in its original position, El altar de Choquechinchay and more. After lunch, we enter Chavin de Huantar Town and stop by the museum. Admissions included. 15:00 we continue on to Huaraz (2-hours). Transportation to your selected hotel for registration. Llanganuco Lagoon, Huaraz

Day 3 • Huaraz • Yungay • Llanganuco Lake • Huaraz (B/L) After breakfast, 08:30 pickup from the hotel by your tour guide. Enjoy a full day excursion towards the north side of Huaraz. We travel to the Llanganuco Lakes located between the mountains of Huascaran and Huandoy. Pass by several typical villages like Monterrey, Paltay, Tarica, Jangas, Yungar Anta appreciating the beautiful white mountains of Huandoy, Huascaran, Hualcan, Copa and others. Continue on to Marcara, Carhuaz 2,650 and Yungay. A 7-degree earthquake took place in Yungay in 1970 at 15:20 hours, pieces of the Huascaran Mountain’s north peak broke off and caused a huge avalanche of mud and ice and in 6 seconds destroyed Yungay province. A guided visit will take you around 45-minutes. 1km north is New Yungay, from here start ascending the dusty road up to the Llanganuco Lakes. Further, on for about one hour we arrive at the base of the Mountain Huascaran and Huandoy and continue until a place called Cebollapampa. From here, start walking along the valley visiting the lakes (first Orconcocha) and doing some bird watching. Then we continue to Chinacocha Lake, here take alternative activities such as sailing with small boats or horse riding. After we continue waking along the lush trail of Maria Josefa. Transportation to a countryside typical restaurant. After lunch, we return to Huaraz. Optional dinner.

Day 4 • Huaraz • Trujillo City Tour (B/L) 08:00 departure north towards Trujillo (4-hours). Transfer to selected hotel for registration. After lunch, private panoramic city tour of Trujillo. We head to the Urquiaga-Calonge House, a colonial mansion now owned by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, and then enjoy a panoramic driving tour to see city sights like Belem Church, Baanante House and the Central Market. While you drive, listen to commentary from your private guide about the city’s history and architecture. Next, visit the National University of Trujillo Museum of Archeology, Anthropology and History (Museo de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia de la Universidad Nacional de Trujillo). Day 4 • Trujillo City Tour (continuation) Ceramics, mosaics and other artifacts from Peru’s pre-Hispanic cultures such as the Chimú and the Moche. Then return to your vehicle to continue your tour, passing by sights like San Lorenzo Church, El Carmen Church, Campana House, the Superior Court, La Merced Church and Plazuela El Recreo. Transfer back to the hotel in the afternoon. 2-Nights in Trujillo.

Day 5 • Temples of Moche • Chan Chan (B/L) After breakfast, 08:30 pickup from the hotel by your English-speaking tour guide. Transfer to the site of the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon, collectively known as the Temples of Moche. Learn about the precise architecture and unlikely construction materials used; admire the intricate friezes that decorate the walls; and gain insight into the ceremonial functions of the colossal buildings. Next, venture to the fearsome Temple of the Dragon to immerse yourself in the captivating customs of the Chimu civilization, admire the pyramid’s detailed depictions of deities before returning to the car to travel to the next site. We take a curvaceous coastal road to the provincial village of Huanchaco, a fishing pueblo famed for its idyllic seaside situation and traditional fishing boats. Learn about the cultural significance of these unique sea vessels. After lunch, we head to the enormous archeological site of Chan Chan, declared the largest ancient city in South America. As the former center of Chimu politics and commerce, the 7-square-mile (18-sq-km) site boasts shrines, cemeteries, ceremonial plazas and reservoirs. Tour all of the significant features with your guide, discovering architectural precision and delving deeper into its ancient history. Return journey to your Trujillo hotel in the afternoon.

Two currents, the cold Humboldt from the south and Ecuatorial from the north, meet just south of Cabo Blanco, creating vastly different water temperatures (the north being considerably warmer year-round). For surfing fanatics, this section of the Pacific is renowned for its excellent swells, long waves, perfect barrels, superb point breaks and awesome lefts. The tourist zone stretches from Órganos in the south to Punta Sal and Zorritos (part of Tumbes) north of Máncora. The top beaches for swimming and sunning are Vichayito, Pocitas, Punta Sal, and Zorritos. To the south, the Cabo Blanco fishing village (of which the largest black marlin on record was caught). Ernest Hemingway did spend time in the area in 1956 deep- sea fishing and carousing. Relax on the beach, go surfing, snorkeling with sea turtles in Nuro, whale watching, deep sea fishing, sand boarding on the desert or explore the wetlands in Tumbes. Tumbes is home for Peruvian salt-water crocodiles and an ideal location for bird watching.
