    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 18, No. 4 (1996) COACH STEVE OWEN: THE GREAT INNOVATOR By Stan Grosshandler, et.al. (Originally published in part in Football Digest) Professional football has advanced from a simple to complex game. To a great extent, this is due to the imaginative genius of the coaches. In the early years the innovators were George Halas, Curly Lambeau, Greasy Neale and Jimmy Conzelman. Later Paul Brown and Vince Lombardi came along. Today [ed.: 1970s] we have Tom Landry, Don Shula, Hank Stram and George Allen to mention a few. Seldom mentioned; yet one of the great innovators of all time is Steve Owen, for 23 years the guiding genius of the New York Giants. Stout Steve came up with innovations like the A-formation and the Umbrella Defense. These were not only catchy names, but effective weapons. The Giants under Owen won eight division and two league championships. What is even more remarkable about Owen is that he stressed defense when few of his contemporaries did. His kind of football began with blocking and tackling. "Football is a game played down in the dirt and it always will be. There's no use getting fancy about it." Often criticized by Giants fans as ultra-conservative, he may have been the first NFL coach to elect to kick off to start a game. He often chose to go for a sure field goal rather than gamble for a touchdown, and that further upset New York rooters. Eventually, however, the rest of the league came around to his way of thinking.

    Football History Highlights Category: Group Activity Series: The NFL at a Glance (Amazing NFL Stories: 12 Highlights from NFL History) Supplies Multiple copies of Amazing NFL Stories: 12 Highlights from NFL History, access to Football history timeline: http://www.profootballhof.com/football-history/history-of-football/ Prep Ask students to read Amazing NFL Stories: 12 Highlights from NFL History or read it together as a class. Skim through the Football history timeline, using the attached Timeline Summary to note the most important events. Directions Ask the students to summarize a few of the chapters of Amazing NFL Stories. Help them notice the kinds of stories the chapters tell (a first-time accomplishment, a change in how the game was played, a rival league, or an all-time record). Split the students into six groups. Assign each group a date range: • 1869 to 1919 • 1960 to 1979 • 1920 to 1939 • 1980 to 1999 • 1940 to 1959 • 2000 to present (Note: On the Football History timeline, all events 1869 to 1939 are in the same category. Since that category is the longest, this activity splits it in half.) Have each group read all the events in their date range on the Football History timeline, looking for the kinds of key events that are described in Amazing NFL Stories. Each group should choose 8 years from their date range that they feel included the most important events. They should write down each year, along with a summary (two or three sentences) of the events that make it important.     The Ensley Athletic Center is the latest major facilities addition to the Lampe Athletics Complex. The $13 million building was constructed in seven months and opened in January 2015. It serves as an indoor training center for the football program, as well as other sports. A multi- million dollar gift from Cliff Ensley, a walk-on who earned a football scholarship and became a three-sport standout at Syracuse in the late 1960s, combined with major gifts from Dick and Jean Thompson, made the construction of the 87,000 square-foot practice facility possible.
