Balenciaga opened his first atelier in 1917, in San Sebastian, when he was only 22 years old. This was the start of an intense activity which would see him set up business in Paris, the city he moved to twenty years later, where he would become the «Master» of international .

Thus, 2017 marks a 100 years since the start of the young Balenciaga’s creative and business adventure and 80 since he opened his famous Parisian maison at number 10 Avenue George V.

A thrilling voyage from San Sebastian to Paris, with stops in Madrid (1933) and Barcelona (1935), where he would open new houses, constituting a transnational business model, unusual in the context of Parisian Haute Couture and which, when it closed in 1968, had some 2,000 people in its employment.

Toby Meadows Is the author of bestseller How to Set up & Run a Fashion Label. He is the founder and director of Three's Company Creative Consultancy, a collective of fashion professionals providing creative and business services to the fashion industry, as well as a director of the London based womenswear designer label Belle & Bunty.
