Morris Frank (1908-1980) was born in Tennessee, the youngest son of wealthy parents. As a six year old boy he lost vision in one eye from riding a horse into a tree limb and the second eye as a result of a boxing match at 16 years of age. Previously, when Morris was three years old, his mother was blinded from a horse-riding accident. He attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville during which time he sold insurance door to door. Morris married Lois in 1942 and they traveled for many years throughout the United States representing The Seeing Eye. In 1927 at the age of 20 Morris read an article in The Saturday Evening Post by Dorothy Eustis describing a European school where German shepherds were trained to guide blinded soldiers. He wrote to her and expressed a desire to obtain such a dog and set up a similar instruction center in the United States. This courageous, enterprising young man was shipped as a package via American Express (imposed conditions of travel) from Nashville by steamship to Switzerland where he met Mrs. Eustis and her head trainer/geneticist, Jack Humphrey. After training with Buddy for five weeks he returned to America with two charges: to demonstrate that dog guides are safe human guides and to get the dogs accepted in public places. With Buddy and tenacious boldness, he demonstrated that the consequences of enhanced and safe mobility were dignity, self-confidence and independence.

He may have been blinded by an accident at the age of 16, but Morris Frank (1908 - 1980) had incredible vision that continues to this day to help people with physical challenges. Frank lost the use of one eye in a childhood accident, and lost his other eye as the result of a boxing accident. In 1927 at the age of 20, his dad read him an article in The Saturday Evening Post about dogs being trained as guides for blinded veterans of World War I. Frustrated by his own lack of mobility as a blind person, he was inspired to write its author, Dorothy Harrison Eustis (1886- 1946) for help. In his letter he stated that "Thousands of blind like me abhor being dependent on others. Help me and I will help them. Train me and I will bring back my dog and show people here how a blind man can be absolutely on his own." Mrs. Eustis was an American training German shepherd police dogs in Switzerland, and when she received Frank's letter, she agreed to help him.     Our Mission Since 1929, The Seeing Eye has partnered with people who are blind by assisting them in enhancing their independence, dignity and self-confidence through the use of Seeing Eye® dogs. More than 17,000 specially bred and trained dogs have brought a new level of mobility, safety, and self-sufficiency to approximately 8,000 men and women throughout the United States and Canada. Early History In 1927, a young man named Morris Frank (1908-1980) read an article about dogs being trained as guides for blinded veterans of World War I. Frustrated by his own lack of mobility as a blind person, he was inspired to write its author for help. Dorothy Harrison Eustis (1886-1946) was an American training German shepherd police dogs in Switzerland, and when she received Morris Frank’s letter, she agreed to help him. He promised he would return to the United States and spread the word about these wonderful dogs. On June 11, 1928, having completed instruction in Switzerland, he arrived in New York City, proving the ability of his dog, Buddy, before throngs of news reporters. His one-word telegram to Mrs. Eustis told the entire story: “Success.” The Seeing Eye was born with the dream of making the entire world accessible to people who are blind. Dates and Locations The Seeing Eye was incorporated in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 29, 1929. In 1931, the organization relocated to Whippany, N.J., because the climate in the northeast was more suitable for training dogs. David is a puppy walker and has been for many years and at present has his thirteenth puppy to train. The puppy walkers do the basic training with the dogs to ensure they are house trained and socialised as they grow. David began by giving us the history of guide dogs for the blind. During the First World War, a doctor looking after war-wounded in Germany was called away from a blind man with whom he was walking in the grounds of the hospital. The doctor left his German shepherd with the man and was subsequently so impressed by the dog's behaviour that he decided to start experiments in training dogs to act as guides for the blind. By 1923 a guide dog training centre had been established at Potsdam which trained several thousand dogs in the next ten years. This work soon came to the attention of a wealthy American, Mrs Dorothy Harrison Eustis, who was breeding and training German shepherds in Switzerland for the customs service, the army and the police. After visiting the Potsdam centre, Mrs Eustis was impressed and wrote an article for the American Saturday Evening Post of October 1927. A few days after the magazine appeared a young, blind American, Morris Frank, was told about the article. Frank bought a copy of the magazine.
