That effort sparked club secretaries, historians, architects, professional writers, enthusiasts – in short, a global community of MacKenzie admirers – to share their knowledge. This, the 20th Revision of “The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology,” is the latest product of that collective and continuing generosity, and once again expands upon the previous revision. Why are MacKenzie’s whereabouts important? A timeline establishes a foundation of fact. Upon this foundation researchers can build their narratives of history. Without this fact base, large gaps in time appear, and speculation is the all too-common and unfortunate result - the quality of scholarship is impoverished. The ramifications can be significant - original design features and perhaps entire courses disappear or suffer disfiguration, writings are misunderstood or misinterpreted, attributions are missed or made improperly.     13 Courses in 13 days: A golfing experience across the Land of Saltire By Javier Pintos On May 22nd I left Buenos Aires on a trip that in the company we believe is the seed for many more golf trips to “The Home of Golf”. Although we have been in the past to Scotland and we have sold the destination for the past 4 years, this trip was a stronger bet as we were leading a 34 golfers party and we added some more days at three new destinations we had not visited yet (Inverness, Aberdeen and East Lothian) and which we believe deserve to be considered when travelling to The Saltire for a golf trip. Scotland offers not only links golf at the highest level but a lot more for devoted golfers: playing courses were golf oldest Major Championship has been played, visiting places with over 200 years of history with our game and walking along towns that breath golf in every corner. Our first three days were in East Lothian playing Gullane no.1, Muirfield (The Honorable Company of Edimburgh Golfers) and North Berwick using it as a Fam Trip trying to discover every secret of this area in order to be able to tell our customers what to expect when visiting this corner of the country. And we believe it holds one of the biggest advantages: you are so close to Edimburgh that you can go after golf to walk the city, have dinner or just discover Murrayfield, the first Rugby Museum in the world. The golfing tour was about to start, it was an intense journey throught 13 classic venues, playing them, taking pictures, glancing at every detail and breathing golf in every step.

    Royal Montrose Golf Club It is widely believed the game of golf evolved on the lands, between the sea and the more fertile hinterland, known as the Links. The East coast of Scotland was ideally suited to this development, and uniquely there are many towns and cities along the length of the east coast of Scotland who have links courses, upon which multiple golf clubs play, such as Aberdeen, Montrose, Arbroath, Carnoustie, Monifieth, St Andrews, and Leven etc. Within these towns and cities many golf clubs were formed as a result of the many trades being plied, such as the Mechanics, the Weavers Club, the Flex dressers Club, the Half Holiday Club, etc. Over the years, as a result of amalgamations, these clubs have been reduced to the three clubs which exist in Montrose today of; The Royal Montrose, the Mercantile and the Caledonia Golf Clubs. Golf was first recorded in Montrose in 1562 when six year old schoolboy James Melville recorded in his diary that “Our maister war teached to handle the bow for archerie, the glub for goff….A happy and golden tyme indeid”, making Montrose the 5th oldest golf course in the world In 1628 the famous Marquis of Montrose became the first golfer to engage a caddie, paying him four shillings, and in 1629 the Marquis spent his honeymoon in Montrose playing golf. Over the years many battles unfolded between the golfers, and the local Town Council over the links lands, as the council wished to use the land for housing and leasing to farmers, in order to gain more income.

    Bobby Jones Envisions Augusta National Golf Club Back in the day when American newspapers cost a nickel, and the price of Southern cotton was still noted at the top of the front page, Bobby Jones had an idea. What if he, and a group of other individuals, bought Berckmans' Place - near Augusta, Georgia - and turned this horticultural paradise of rolling hills, fruit trees and gorgeous flowers (like azaleas) into a stunningly beautiful golf course? What if they hired Dr. Alister MacKenzie - a world-famous course architect - to transform farm land into golf greens? While America was still gripped by the Great Depression, and the U.S. Federal Reserve was deciding whether to loan Germany additional funds (beyond the $100 million loan which was already outstanding), Jones and his colleagues moved forward with their plans. They had an option to purchase the land for about $200 an acre. (Had they waited a few years, it would have cost them even less.) With Bobby Jones heading the project, wealthy Americans contributed thousands of dollars. Although some had been hard-hit by the market crash - like Alfred Severn Bourne, of Singer Sewing Machine fame, who had lost $10,000,000 "almost overnight after the Crash" - other contributors had cash-on-hand for such a venture. The result of their efforts? Augusta National Golf Club which annually hosts "The Masters," one of golf's most prestigious events. The first Masters took place in 1934 (when it was called the "Augusta National Invitational"). Horton Smith won. To this day, the event still includes many amateurs (which was very important to Bobby Jones).

Attention: Laura McGregor Tel: +44 (0)131 228 5824 Mobile: +44 (0) 772 5589 353 [email protected] Guinness World Records officially recognises the World's Oldest Golf Course The Old Golf Course at Musselburgh Links just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland has been officially recognised as the oldest surviving golf course in the world by Guinness World Records. Historians uncovered the earliest record of golf being played on any surviving golf course from an Account Book of Sir John Foulis of Ravelston, an Edinburgh lawyer. The earliest game played on Musselburgh Links took place on 2 March 1672 where he documents "he lost at golfe at Musselburgh&£3.05.0." This documentary evidence was included in The Golf Book of East Lothian, published in 1896 and written by John Kerr, the minister of Dirleton. Musselburgh has long been known affectionately as The Cradle of Golf. Mary Queen of Scots is believed to have played the course in 1567; its origins however are probably in the twelfth or thirteenth century. The first tournament for women was held on the course in 1811 and it was one of the three founding venues for The Open along with Prestwick and St Andrews, Musselburgh Old Course holding The Open six times between 1874 and 1889.
