Thisspeciesofseasnailisimportanthistoricallybecauseitshypobranchialglandsecretesamucusthattheancient Canaanites/Phoeniciansusedasadistinctive -blue dye.Oneofthedye'smainchemicalingredientsis indigotin,andifleftinthesunforafewminutesbeforebecomingfast,itscolorturnstoa blue indigo(likebluejeans).

Shell description

H. trunculus hasabroadlyconicalshellabout4to10cmlong.Ithasaratherhighspirewithsevenangulatedwhorls. Theshellisvariableinsculptureandcoloringwithdarkbanding,infourvarieties.Theribssometimesdevelop thickeningsorspinesandgivetheshellaroughappearance.

Ancient uses of the dye

Theancientmethodformassproducingthe purple-blue dyefrom H. trunculus hasnotyetbeensuccessfully reproduced(becausethepurplishhuedegradestooquicklyresultinginblueonly),buttheuseofthisspecieshas beenconfirmedinthearcheologyof,wherelargequantitiesofthisseasnail'sshellshavebeenrecovered frominsideancientlivestoragechambersusedforharvesting.Allegedly,60,000murexwereneededtoproduceone poundofdye.Thedyewashighlyprizedinancienttimes.Sometimesknownas royal blue ,itwasprohibitively expensiveandonlyaffordedbythehighestrankingaristocracy.

Asimilardye, ,whichis purple-red incolor,wasmadefromarelatedspeciesofmarinesnail, Murex brandaris .Thisdye(alternativelyknownas imperial purple ,seepurple)wasalsoprohibitivelyexpensive.
